the STORY gets 5 stars - it's been one of my favorites since I first read it as a child in the 60s. But this 60th anniversary book? I wish I had bought the Aladdin hard back version instead. What I got for my $12.86 was a hardback the size of a trade paperback, with the same quality of paper you'd have in an inexpensive paperback.I expected a 60th anniversary edition to be more of a traditional hardback size, AND better quality that would make you think it would last a long time.I don't have time to replace it - am giving it as a gift to a 10yr old today, but am very tempted to tell her it didn't come in yet. Steer clear of this 60th anniversary version and look for the Aladdin hardback version. You'll be happier, in my opinion.

I gave this five stars as a chapter book to read to an elementary school-aged child. Our daughter is on the second grade level of homeschooling, without ever having attended public school. I remember reading Misty of Chincoteague as a child. We started with that one and finished. I don't recall reading this one, about her foal born during a hurricane, so it has been a little more fun to read, not knowing what is coming next. Not too many chapter books have held our seven y/o daughter's attention. She couldn't tolerate the original Wizard of Oz series that I read to my older children. Maybe they were older than seven though. She asked me to quit reading Alice and Wonderland, and Charlotte's Web. This is our second Marguerite Henry book in a row though. It may have something to do with our child loving horses, and taking riding lessons from an aunt. Some nights she doesn't want me to stop reading until she falls asleep; other nights one chapter seems like too much, but she does not want me to stop this book. It is written a little after the manner of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn books, but not quite as bad. I have trouble pronouncing some of the made-up words depicting Grandma and Grandpa's speech though. It is a delightful book, with a touch of geography and history.

In case anyone reading this review hasn't already read Misty of Chincoteague...add it to your "to read" list. It's a classic, enjoyed by all ages, and interesting not just for horse lovers but for anyone else who enjoys a well-written adventure based on history. Chincoteague Island, a charming small town with restaurants and B&B's and little shops is just off the Virginia coast and is a peaceful and delightful vacation spot. It's a short drive to the adjacent island of Assateague which has a pristine beach on the ocean, and is run by the National Park Service. Walking trails and a historic lighthouse are also there. Once a year the Park Service oversees the drive of some the wild ponies from one island to the other to be sold, the reason being that they thrive so well there isn't room for all of them on the island. The history of this area, from the first shipwreck with the original ponies swimming to the island, to the War Between the States (Maryland is just "next door", to the present is another treat of its own.

As a child, I was a very fast reader and I read constantly. My parents didn't have a lot of money, but they tried to buy books for me occasionally. On one memorable shopping trip, my dad and I spotted this book. Without knowing anything at all about Pony Penning Day or all of that (we live in Oklahoma) we both thought it looked great. It was a hardback book and not cheap, but Daddy bought it for me. I read it all the way home, pestering Daddy as to how to pronounce "Chincoteague" (he had no idea) and if the story was real (ditto) and I have loved it ever since. I think every horse lover, especially young ones, should read it at least once! BTW, there is an old movie of this story also. It's available on DVD and follows the book fairly well, though it occasionally deviates like nearly any movie. It's interesting in that they got actors who were authentic (or at least seemed to be) rather than well-known box-office draws and it makes the entire story much more real. If your child or family likes old movies and likes the Misty book, they'll probably like the movie, too.

Like many of the other posters, I read Misty of Chincoteague when I was a child and loved it. I then went on to read all of Marguerite Henry's books. Recently my daughter and her children vacationed in the area of Assateague and Chincoteague Islands. I had forgotten all about the wild horses, but my daughter's experience made me recall the book about Misty. My public library no longer carried it so I ordered it. The book is just as good as I remembered it to be.My only complaint is the claim that this is a library edition. The book looks just like the one in the picture, but after I opened it I questioned the library edition description. It looks like a paperback inside with a nice hardcover outside. Maybe the pages are made out of recycled paper or something, but they look cheesy and are definitely not of the high quality that would stand up to library usage. For this reason and this reason only, I am giving the book 4 stars instead of 5, my apologies to the author's family. My criticism regarding the quality of the paper the book is printed on does not reflect Marguerite Henry's legacy. My only wish is that today's children have the opportunity to read this fine book whatever the paper quality. Now I feel bad about the 4 stars, but since I can't rate it 4.5, this will have to do.

Misty of Chincoteague and The Black Stallion were my favorite childhood books. I ordered them for our 7 year old grandson and he loved them. Now he wants to read Stormy, Misty's Foal. His eyes lit up when I told him that it is true, the wild ponies really do exist; and that America's first wild horses were survivors of shipwrecks. That led him to think of a story of his own. He wanted to send the idea to Marguerite Henry, but I suggested he write it himself. He hasn't put it on paper yet, but he came home from school Friday and busied himself with the cover illustration. Got to love it when a book sparks a child's imagination and creativity!
