I purchased the first book in the series for my nephew. He enjoyed it so much that I started reading it to see what it was all about. A classic good vs. evil with empathetic characters. It might be more suited for a younger audience but what can I say.... I'm hooked! Just started the second book in the series and it just gets better. In my opinion, it's a great story to be enjoyed by all ages.

I was discouraged when I received the book. I was aware that it was 1-3 books, but I didn't expect them all to be in one book. "Great. He (my 9 y.o.) is never going to read it.", I thought.My 9 y.o. son does not like to read. He does not have the attention span for sitting around and read a book. The only time he would read is if the book has pictures (it doesn't have to be a graphic novel, but some sort of pictures to go with the story). So, when I received the Epic Zero 1-3 book, I was discouraged.However, I sat down and read the first chapter with him before bedtime to get a feel of the book and to see his reaction. To my surprise, he ENJOYED IT VERY VERY VERY MUCH. He went on and finished the book within 3 days and asked for volume 4 after that! I have since purchased the 4th book as well as downloaded the "extra" in PDF format and my son, of course, has read all of them.Epic Zero was his first book without any illustration. Thank you, R.L. Ullman for writing the whole series! You showed my son that it was possible to fall in love with a book without pictures. Please continue writing the series!!

Both my 7 year old son and I really enjoyed the Epic Zero series. Fun, fast read. Very entertaining with lots of humor. My son couldn’t put it down, and I really enjoyed the adventure too. Highly recommend!

My son and I had been reading the Harry Potter book series for the past two years, and after finishing, we’re looking for our next adventure. I came across Epic Zero, and ordered the box set. My son and I are through the first two books already, eagerly anticipating the third and last book. Elliott Harkness is a great character, along with all the friends, heroes, and villains he meets along the way. I highly recommend this box set to all!

Any time my kids beg me to keep reading, I know it's a good book. I have read aloud to them for many years and I'll continue until they ask me to stop. My kids are 11, 13, and 15 (boy, girl, boy) and they loved this set. We read all three books and my kids would have read a 4th if there had been one. My daughter was a little lost, but it's mainly because she doesn't always pay attention (she plays on her phone) so she missed key pieces of information. My boys hung on every word though and at times they were more aware of what was happening and what they thought was going to happen than I was. Kids want to be super heroes! They imagine themselves being able to fly and defeat villains. These books tell about a boy who thinks he can do nothing, but then realizes he has powers. It was funny, entertaining, and had good lessons. The bad guys lost; the good guys won. It ended well, and there wasn't any bad language (I think they said "sucks" once, but I substituted if for "stinks." Overall, we all liked it a lot!

Epic Zero is awesome! Enough said but I will elaborate. My 7 year old son is in amour with this series, we red through the entire 3 books in two weeks he couldn't get enough. He would beg not to go to bed and keep reading..."Just a little more mommy please!" I found it this enjoyable to read with my child, I love super hero myself and together we were both excited to keep reading the story. The only issue I face now is a sad child that has no more books in the series, I hope there will be more to come! This is the first book that my son has said he is going to read this entire book again. He absolutely can't get enough of Epic Zero...Please write more!

 I enjoy reading this book, I had so much fun. My son loved it. This is the kind of book that keep you reading and reading to the end.I have to said that the book is really interesting, Would recommend to any one, any age.. This was a very fun book, as I could understand how frustrating it would be to not have super powers. I found it interesting how the main character still managed to work things out, even without super powers.

This book will change your life. It's not necessarily a front to back read but you can go about it that way for your first time through. Now I'll flip to a section and see what resonates. There are so many life lessons here that will help you get through your daily life, helping you to stay present and take time to love yourself which is so important.

I have read some of Lama Surya's later books and attended his retreats, which I highly recommend. I had avoided this one, thinking it was probably too basic. But once I decided to read it, I loved every page. I'd recommend it for a beginner or for someone more experienced who'd like a clear view or Buddhism from one of the great American teachers.

Lama Surya Das is a Western Buddhist activist in that he grew up in the United States and then studied the Eastern religious concepts and beliefs, thereby becoming a practicing Buddhist. His approach is to blend Eastern understanding of the Buddhist teachings into the Western context so that the benefit of Eastern philosophy can be utilized by Westerners, invoking the flow, calm and wisdom of living life left by earlier teachers or avatars to the world, wherever a person is while experiencing the events of life. This book studies the process and acquisition of altering life patterns that lead toward achieving enlightenment. A helpful, easy to understand presentation.

Well written if you are looking for a lot of detail regarding mindset and deep thoughts.For me, this book is a little dragged out - the author seem to want to included commentary on every thought he has had since he was eight years old, daily accounts and observations.However, he does give enough information about the Buddha and the spiritual practice to make me want to learn more. In fact I've highlighted many passages and have been driven to the internet to get more detailed information about the teachings Lama Surya Das experienced.

Here is a clear, easy-to-understand summary and explanation of the main concepts of Buddhist philosophy.Lama Surya Das has the credentials in both Eastern and Western thought to explain these concepts.Centuries of wisdom are packed into one book. This is a basic reference book that you can return to for years for information, inspiration, and insight.Whether you intend to adhere to Buddhist thought or whether you want to learn more about the concepts, this book will be useful.Lama Surya Das doesn't "lecture;" he explains. This is not a "dull" philosophy book; it lists concepts and explains them in terms we Westerners can understand and relate to.

I first read part of this about 6-7 years ago. Although I agreed with all of the ideas and ideals of Buddhism presented, I did not commit myself to the path but I called myself a Buddhist. I am now reading the entire book, getting much more out of it and dedicating myself to the Buddhist path. I was raised as a Christian but did not find meaning in that faith and proceeded to do a lot of searching, checking out Daoism, Sufism, astrology, spiritualism, psychism and all sorts of other ideas.Lama Surya Das, although accused of presenting "Buddhism Lite," knows what he is talking about, having spent many years mediating and learning from Tibetan lamas. This is a well written, clear, practical and easy to understand introduction to Buddhism. That doesn't mean it's an easy read. There is a huge amount of information and explanation so you can't just swallow it whole. It takes time to absorb and once you begin to begin to practice it, your understanding deepens. We all have to start where we are and no one becomes enlightened overnight. Any effort you make is worth it. No matter what your religion or lack of it, you can benefit from the ideas presented.

This book "Awakening The Buddha Within" by Lama Surya Das and Anne Bancroft's "The Buddha Speaks" are two of the best books written to guide you and free yourself of all that is deterring you from your awakening and enlightenment. Both books are equal in the value of their teachings. In some cases they may take a different perspective but still have the basic goal in mind for the follower at the end. I have found much peace within, and my thirst is unquenchable, even at this early stage. You have to be open to realization, which may or may not be how you've perceived it. You can either work towards getting 100% out of the teachings or nothing at all. Its up to you....MO

This is one of the best, if not *the* best, book on Tolkien that I've ever read. The question of Tolkien's philosophy in writing his fiction have always fascinated me, but there has long been a disagreement in scholarship as to where he was planted: is Tolkien's work pagan? Gnostic? Christian? Modern? Medieval? McIntosh's work doesn't just choose one and argue it, nor does it choose them all and say that Tolkien's philosophy is ambiguous and undeveloped. McIntosh shows that Tolkien is heavily indebted to St. Thomas and the Thomastic culture he grew up in, but also how he uses Thomastic ideas and theology to re-mythologize the world, from common things to religious discourse. One of the reviewers on the back writes that this book will become a seminal book or "canon" - and it should. McIntosh's work re-founds and focuses philosophical investigations into Tolkien's work.

Never have I found such clarity in any of my prior reading about the theology of Saint Thomas, or even Summa Theologica itself, as I've gained from this book. Presenting Tolkien's work, almost as contemporary Thomist parables, to explain the often intricate theological concepts of the angelic doctor was for me most effective. This incredibly thoughtful work would likely be heartily endorsed by Tolkien and St. Thomas alike. Extremely well done!

I found this walk though of the Thomistic influence on Tolkien's work both enlightening and instructive. It illuminated for me areas of thought regarding creation and its relationship metaphysically to both art and technology (enhancement vs domination) but it also taught me much about degrees or categories of good and evil. That's really important. In today's world such exploration in fiction is regarded with suspicion and contempt. But then we now seek to learn of ourselves by studying simians rather than Angels. Regarding such exploration as trite is a reflection not of the subject but of the critic. Indeed. This book has left me with much to explore.The first bit is heavy and worth slogging through to understand the rest. I'll probably have to read it again.
