Amazon.com Review

In the late 20th century, unfortunately, berries are seen primarily in the supermarket at certain times of year, and while this is welcome, it used to be that everyone had a few berry bushes in the backyard: some currants, some gooseberries and a few rhubarb plants. Stella Otto explains how to bring this tradition back and raise lush crops of berries and fruit with pointers on soil nutrition, plant nutrients and mulching that will make your home-grown berries the envy of folks who only see them in the supermarket. This mouth-watering book will get you going.

From Booklist

Otto focuses on what she calls small fruit, fruit that does not grow on trees but as a cultivated, perennial crop on small plants, canes, bushes, or vines--strawberries, rhubarbs, brambles (raspberries and blackberries), blueberries, lingonberries, currants, gooseberries, grapes, and kiwi fruit. She begins with a chapter on site selection and preparation, continuing with chapters on plant selection and propagation; berry botany; soil nutrition, photosynthesis, and water; pest control; and diseases. Chapters detailing the growing of these small fruits complete the book, along with troubleshooting questions and answers, a seasonal activity calendar, and a glossary. George Cohen

I purchased this book, the third copy I've bought so far, as a holiday present for my brother. He has found it to be as helpful as I have. It is a very basic book about how to grow about any berry plant. It is written for a home grower, not a botanist or commercial grower, and is full of useful information. Photos would be nice, but would probably increase the cost of the book putting it out of reach of more people.

This is a handy little book. I read it once a few years ago and learned a lot. More importantly, I keep returning to it when I have questions about some of the plants in my backyard: grapes, blueberries, and cane berries. Ms. Otto has been there and really knows her subject well. The book is comprehensive and covers what you really need to know: planting, care requirements, pruning and training, and harvesting. If you're looking for a flashy, full-color book, this is not it, but for some down home wisdom with lots of diagrams, etc., this book contains what you need.

Good information and helpful.Good information and helpful.

Nice to have in my collection on medicinal and edible plants. Well written and easy to understand

Great book so far. havent' had time to read much, but have black berry bushes.

As an experienced veggie gardener, just getting into berries, I was worried this book would be too beginner-orriented. In fact when it first arrived, I leafed through it and thought it was! I set it aside and didn't open it for another few weeks. But once I had really started to read this book, I found that it is plenty informative for an intermediate gardener. Otto gives loads of detail for each crop that I hadn't found elsewhere. I am very satisfied!

I was getting into growing some food for my family, and one big request was for blue berries. This bood does a great job helping describe the types of berries on the market as well as how to plant. The artwork inside is line art, so don't expect any photo's of berries, brambles and the like.

While the premise of the story is inspired; the story itself was very uninspiring.Accepted that the PA Celine set up the scene with Dan, but considering the condition that Helen caught them in- cannot understand Dan's insistence that she should have trusted him. It was a wonder that she did not kill them!! Could not understand how Dan could re-employ Celine , no matter how good she is at her job. This totally turns me off. Dan found it more difficult to do without Celine (at work), than without his wife ..... what the *&^/#. In fact for a large part of the book he seemed to be happy to be separate from his wife ....!! and the way he thinks they should work around it .......*^%#, what was the author thinking .....Considering that Helen still wanted to make it work (before she knew for sure that Dan was not unfaithful), shows the depth of her feelings. Dan's rejections - even with his so-called past, shows him to be centered on himself only. Also, he keeps blaming his wife - why?Helen is hormonal and hysterical a lot of the time; understandable as she is pregnant with twins and going thru' the worst phase in her marriage.I could not enjoy the story.

What happened when the wife walks into her home and finds both her husband and his PA undressed? The answer is to file for divorce. But when they find out that she is pregnant with not one but two babies it will be hard to forgive. Especially when he demands to be there for the babies. But the trust is broken. How to mend it? That is what this story was about.

Helen and Dan seem to have drifted apart not taking time to spend on their relationship. So of course when she comes home to find another woman's clothes strung out on the steps leading to their bedroom and then to actually see the woman there . . . well it doesn't look good at all. Sounded very intriguing and full of angst, right? The other woman was Dan's secretary and he seems intent on blaming her for the whole scenario. Of course, Helen isn't buying it. Why wouldn't another woman want her hot husband? Dan gets very upset that Helen doesn't believe him and he quickly fires his secretary. Then he turns it around to blame her by claiming his love has been thrown back in his face a lot. He wants unconditional love and his child will be the one shot at that. Seriously, that sounds a bit selfish to me. Dan comes up w/ a brilliant solution so that he can still be there in the house for his children. Helen comes up w/ her own scheme and agrees to his plan.It failed in several points for me though.**SPOILERS** I felt like Dan truly loved Helen, okay I wanted to feel that, but after dismissing his secretary he hires her back WITH MORE PAY (and she will be made partner) because he needs her. Dan can NOT function w/out this manipulative OW??!! No one else in the entire world of HPland could be helpful to this man? I wanted to believe Dan loves Helen, but to hire back this POW OW was very distasteful on his part and to not even tell his wife - smacks of keeping secrets. He let go of his pride for OW, but not for his wife.It looked really bad for Dan because his explanation didn't hold water either. Why in the world would OW take his clothes w/ her? That made no sense to me after all they are in his house and he could just put on other clothes, of course it wouldn't go w/ his story of a spill though since there was no evidence. He is very upset and angry that Helen won't believe him. There is a text from OW that Helen finds later that doesn't sound good and it is signed "Love". BTW do secretaries sign off like that?Dan wants OW to tell the truth, but she is ashamed - she eventually agrees though. Dan also wants Helen and OW to be "happy family" - really he wants her to go to OW's wedding! Helen of course starts to believe Dan - has to as the pages are drawing to a close.OW wants forgiveness so that she could feel clean and decent after what she did. Dan wants Helen to give that forgiveness as well. Nice guy who was so concerned for the way his children would be raised and he thought blaming their mom for manipulations of OW is a good thing?! ok technically it wasn't all OW's fault Idiot forgives this woman for destroying their marriage and practically destroying their children's family as well w/ her manipulations. Oh and Helen is fantastic because she forgives OW. Guess I'm not. I can't believe he could hold such anger towards his wife for not believing him but so quickly forgive the OW.

Excellent book loved it

Enjoyed getting this book.

Review

"Corey deftly weaves multiple points of view to create a dense and colorful tapestry of political intrigue, personal relationships, and sophisticated technology that bursts with action but also delivers an introspective view of the characters as they age and reflect on their purpose and the value of their lives."―Booklist (starred review)"A standout tale of violence, intrigue, ambition, and hope. ... Corey cranks up the tension relentlessly in this fast-paced story of heroes and rebels fighting for freedom. With enough thrills and intrigue for three Hollywood blockbusters, the novel stands alone nicely, making it easy for new readers as well as diehard series fans to dive right in." ―Publishers Weekly on Nemesis Games"The science fictional equivalent of A Song of Ice and Fire...only with fewer beheadings and way more spaceships."―NPR Books on Cibola Burn"Combining an exploration of real human frailties with big SF ideas and exciting thriller action, Corey cements the series as must-read space opera."―Library Journal (starred review) on Cibola Burn"The Expanse series is the best space opera series running at full tilt right now, and Cibola Burn continues that streak of excellence."―io9 on Cibola Burn"Corey's splendid fourth Expanse novel blends adventure with uncommon decency."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Cibola Burn"A politically complex and pulse-pounding page-turner.... Corey perfectly balances character development with action... series fans will find this installment the best yet."―Publishers Weekly on Abaddon's Gate"It's been too long since we've had a really kickass space opera. Leviathan Wakes is interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written, the kind of SF that made me fall in love with the genre way back when, seasoned with a dollop of horror and a dash of noir. Jimmy Corey writes with the energy of a brash newcomer and the polish of a seasoned pro. So where's the second book?"―George R. R. Martin on Leviathan Wakes"An excellent space operatic debut in the grand tradition of Peter F. Hamilton."―Charles Stross on Leviathan Wakes"High adventure equaling the best space opera has to offer, cutting-edge technology, and a group of unforgettable characters bring the third installment of Corey's epic space drama (after Caliban's War and Leviathan Wakes) to an action-filled close while leaving room for more stories to unfold. Perhaps one of the best tales the genre has yet to produce, this superb collaboration between fantasy authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck should reawaken an interest in old-fashioned storytelling and cinematic pacing. Highly recommended."―Library Journal (starred review) on Abaddon's Gate

I just finished Tiamat's Wrath and gave it 5 stars. I never give anything 5 stars, and maybe after I detox I'll want to drop it back to 4 stars, but really, it was great. Writing, characters, plot, sciencey stuff, galactic politics. All really well done. Thoughtful but accessible, not a combination we often get in SF.Also, not the place to start the series or even this three-book arc.Like Nemesis Games, this is a story where the crew of the Roci are all off doing separate things, which is how we left it at the end of the previous book, Persopolis Rising. If you read that, then you'll remember that the black fleet that disappeared through the ring gates early on has come back with newer bigger ships and rolled Empire all over the 1300 worlds humans have access to. Naomi, Alex, Amos, and Bobbi are all back in the underground game, and Holden is prisoner to High Consul Duart, man who would be emperor, or as Jim puts it, his "Dancing Bear."Bobbi and Alex are off running another captured ship, the Gathering Storm, which they took away from the Laconian Imperial fleet at the end of the last book, and Naomi is doing deep thinking and strategizing for the new resistance while hiding out in an elaborate shell game of cargo containers and shipping vessels. Amos went off on a high-risk mission to get Jim back and has gone dark, and Jim's wandering around chatting up the emperor, the mad scientist that's been cooking proto-molecule since book 1, and Teresa, the girl who stands to inherit the empire if her now proto-molecule-immortal father ever falls. Meanwhile, Duarte has scientists (played by our old friends from Cibola Burn, Elvi, and Fayez) off looking for a solar system empty enough that he can do something to poke the bear on the other side of the ring, the one that makes ships disappear if too many go through too often. What could go wrong? As Holden says, "...the problem with thousand-year Reichs. they come and go like fireflies."I haven't liked all the Expanse novels equally, and the previous one made me worried that the series would end on a whimper rather than a bang, but Tiamat's Wrath makes me think that it's going to be something to remember.Ernest LilleySFRevu - Editor Emeritus

I am sure I will love the book as I have the prior books and I have looked forward to this for months! I purchased the audible and kindle version as quick as I could today. My one disappointment is that whispersync features that allows syncing of your position between the Kindle version and the audible version is not enabled. Is this planned to be enabled soon? This technical issue reduces enjoyment of books for me and I hope it can be added soon.

4 words in and I hate the authors.

From start to finish I was immersed in the story it was like I was there with the characters. I only wish the next book was available.

How could an invincible empire fall? A really cool next volume that sets things up for the ultimate novel. Some sadness, some joy, but that’s life.

So nice to be back in the Expanse world. Excellent plot and pacing. Next to last book in the series.

I will update my review when finished. But right as soon as the book starts I'm hooked, alot going on, I'm soaking it all up. Refreshing to hear a main character at the start!

Amazon.com Review

The long-awaited, eagerly anticipated, arguably over-hyped Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has arrived, and the question on the minds of kids, adults, fans, and skeptics alike is, "Is it worth the hype?" The answer, luckily, is simple: yep. A magnificent spectacle more than worth the price of admission, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will blow you away. However, given that so much has gone into protecting the secrets of the book (including armored trucks and injunctions), don't expect any spoilers in this review. It's much more fun not knowing what's coming--and in the case of Rowling's delicious sixth book, you don't want to know. Just sit tight, despite the earth-shattering revelations that will have your head in your hands as you hope the words will rearrange themselves into a different story. But take one warning to heart: do not open Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince until you have first found a secluded spot, safe from curious eyes, where you can tuck in for a good long read. Because once you start, you won't stop until you reach the very last page. A darker book than any in the series thus far with a level of sophistication belying its genre, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves the series into murkier waters and marks the arrival of Rowling onto the adult literary scene. While she has long been praised for her cleverness and wit, the strength of Book 6 lies in her subtle development of key characters, as well as her carefully nuanced depiction of a community at war. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, no one and nothing is safe, including preconceived notions of good and evil and of right and wrong. With each book in her increasingly remarkable series, fans have nervously watched J.K. Rowling raise the stakes; gone are the simple delights of butterbeer and enchanted candy, and days when the worst ailment could be cured by a bite of chocolate. A series that began as a colorful lark full of magic and discovery has become a dark and deadly war zone. But this should not come as a shock to loyal readers. Rowling readied fans with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by killing off popular characters and engaging the young students in battle. Still, there is an unexpected bleakness from the start of Book 6 that casts a mean shadow over Quidditch games, silly flirtations, and mountains of homework. Ready or not, the tremendous ending of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will leave stunned fans wondering what great and terrible events await in Book 7 if this sinister darkness is meant to light the way. --Daphne Durham Visit the Harry Potter Store Our Harry Potter Store features all things Harry, including books (box sets and collector's editions), audio CDs and cassettes, DVDs, soundtracks, games, and more. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone * Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him. * When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists. * Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets * The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius. * Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother. * The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban * Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'. * Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children. * The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire * Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them. * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it. * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge. * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix * Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming. * Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone. * Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager. * Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape. * Dumbledore's confession to Harry. Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. A Few Words from Mary GrandPré "When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

Grade 5 Up–Opening just a few weeks after the previous book left off, the penultimate entry in the series is, as the author foretold, the darkest and most unsettling yet. The deeds of Voldemort's Death Eaters are spreading even to the Muggle world, which is enshrouded in a mist caused by Dementors draining hope and happiness. Harry, turning 16, leaves for Hogwarts with the promise of private lessons with Dumbledore. No longer a fearful boy living under the stairs, he is clearly a leader and increasingly isolated as rumors spread that he is the Chosen One, the only individual capable of defeating Voldemort. Two attempts on students' lives, Harry's conviction that Draco Malfoy has become a Death Eater, and Snape's usual slimy behavior add to the increasing tension. Yet through it all, Harry and his friends are typical teens, sharing homework and messy rooms, rushing to classes and sports practices, and flirting. Ron and Hermione realize their attraction, as do Harry and Ginny. Dozens of plot strands are pulled together as the author positions Harry for the final book. Much information is cleverly conveyed through Dumbledore's use of a Pensieve, a device that allows bottled memories to be shared by Harry and his beloved professor as they apparate to various locations that help explain Voldemort's past. The ending is heart wrenching. Once again, Rowling capably blends literature, mythology, folklore, and religion into a delectable stew. This sixth book may be darker and more difficult, but Potter fans will devour it and begin the long and bittersweet wait for the final installment.–Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is book 6 in the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. It is a thicker book than the previous books, and it is a lot heavier for sure. The quality of the book itself is excellent. Dust-jacket is very nice. Constructed same as the previous books. Story-wise, things just get more and more interesting that you can't put the book down and don't want to stop until you find out what is next after each page. This is my favorite book of the entire series. It is very dark in some places, but the flashbacks into the past in where we learn so much about Voldemort or Tom Riddle are very interesting and engaging. Danger is everywhere. Everything seems to be at risk, and you just don’t know what will happen next. Nothing seems to be safe anymore. There is also a little romance, but tension as well. It’s a pretty big book. A lot of pages to read. But, I was able to read it over a weekend or so with determination. There are so many plot lines in this book, and the pace does not let up from first page to the last page. There are new twists and turns. I cannot reveal without spoiling. This is definitely an excellent book.I recommend this book for sure. It is priced fairly I think on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime, the 2-day Free shipping is nice.

This is at least my fifth reading of this, easily my favorite book of the HP series. I get more out of each book upon every re-read, and this one especially. One of the great joys of the series, and especially of HBP, is the humor JKR manages to thread throughout the story, even as things are sad, or scary, or serious. The tiny references to Harry's burgeoning affection for Ginny, the way Fred and George manage to slip in one-liners even as chaos is erupting around them, it always feels like a gift from the author. This book, maybe more than any of the others, also really takes the time for character development. This is the book where Hermione becomes one of the great female characters in fiction, and where Harry stops being the victim of constant happy accidents and starts making his own choices. Plus it's just a really great mystery story! And ties in so importantly (obviously) with the overarching mythology.I will always remember receiving this book the day it was published (July 2007, right?), a day I had to go to a wedding and also shop for a big dinner party. I hid the book under my seat at the wedding and kept turning the pages behind my ankles, only looking up at the ceremony every page or so. Then I had the book balanced on my shopping cart, blindly tossing vegetables and cans in as fast as I could. When I got home, I finished the rest of the book by 2am, texting with my sister, saying, "I'm on page xxx." We finished within a few minutes of each other, exchanging comments on what sobbing messes we were. Later that week, I was walking to lunch and saw a girl sitting in the sun outside of the bank (where she presumably worked). She had the book in her lap and her head in her hands, obviously on one of the sad, stressful final chapters. I wanted to just go over and give her a hug.

I got hooked on these books by accident around when the second movie came out. After that, I had to read them all and I was one of those people who would buy the book at the midnight release. The same happened with my mother so I started buying them for her on in large print so she could easily read them without straining her eyes. The story is simple without being too over-the-top fantasy (my opinion) like other series I could never really get into.

The movies are wonderful BUT the Books Are ALWAYS Better! Why? You get the whole story as written by the original author!!! Nothing cut out or story lines Changed Entirely by editors or others who must squeeze and manipulate the ORIGINAL STORIES so as to fill a time slot, or showcase certain (undeserving) actors who wiggle their way into more “air time”...manipulating the original plot lines..It Shows to those of us who know. SO READ THE BOOKS, its like 50% more Harry Potter PLUS “THE REAL, UNDULTERATED, UNTOUCHED STORY. You should buy hard covered books because you WILL want to hand them down to your kids, grandkids, friends, and keep for yourself. These stories deserve re-reading! BUY THE BOOKS, you can get full sets! It is so very worth it and make great gifts for kids or fans of any age. GOOD LUCK, ENJOY!

As I wrote before: I just love all Harry Potter books, they are very engaging and beautifully written. Plenty of details describing characters and the magical world, which combined with Rowling's sense of humor make these books a masterpiece. I'd say easy to read even for a 4th. Grader, but at the same time people from any age will enjoy them. Please let me put them this way: I first watched the movies and I loved them, then I read the books and now I am disappointed about the movies. There is so much detail, important facts, and character development that the movies don't show which makes reading the books a must. Won't be disappointed about the books.

The Sixth Book is when motivations become clear, alliances are broken, and the risks are higher. Two VERY important plot points happen in this book. One is a huge death toward the end of the book, which I won't spoil for new readers. And the other is the background on Tom Riddle and how he came to be Lord Voldemort. You learn about his birth mother and her terrible family, you learn about Tom Riddle, Sr. and his family, and you learn how Voldemort used Dark Magic to extend his life. All very exciting and new stuff happen in this novel.I didn't really feel the length of this book unlike OOTP. Very good read. Obviously if you have gotten this far in the series you would undoubtedly read this novel, so don't delay and finish this book!
