I have a large number of books on Reformed Theology including a number of books which seek to use the Westminster Confession and Catechisms as a springboard to explain the intricacies of Calvinism, but even with all that at my disposal I find this work is something special. The clarity of thought here is miles beyond anything else I've found. The format is simple: A question from the catechism, the relevant scripture passages identified and summarized in a single sentence, then a series of brief questions and answers on the passage. The Larger Catechism of the Westminster Confession has unfortunately been rather neglected, both in churches and in the written word (Thomas Ridgely's two volume commentary is the only other I can think of, and it's much too complex for most readers) but this volume makes all the theological complexities crystal clear. A must read.

Answer: To read J. G. Vos's extremely clear commentary on the (overlooked and underread) Westminster Larger Catechism. For those who would like a one-volume, handy, theological volume to study, this would be a good one (another good one is A. A. Hodge's Commentary on the Confession). If you are someone studying for licensure or ordinations exam, or someone trying to better understand the overview of the Bible (also read his father's 'Biblical Theology for an overview), or studying for Sunday school class, or someone studying for devotion, this book is for you! It is quite indispensable as a commentary on the catechism and now after years of being out of print, P&R has seen fit to bless us! I hope that this volume will help us to return to our confessional roots as a people of God who are part of a great and long heritage of saints! 'Take up and read!'

FIVE STARS for content.ONE STAR for KINDLE version. The Kindle version text is quite possibly the worst I've ever seen - it even looks bad on an iPad with retina display. It looks like a poor quality scan of a rough draft. I don't want to give this a low rating because of this but buyer beware - get a sample of the Kindle version before buying to check the font.

I love this book. I was not aware of the treasure trove that awaited me when I ordered this-- yes I saw the reviews-- but it's bundled with so much great and needed theological truths that even now it is hard for me to put it into words. I haven't finished it yet but it is one of the few books that once I pick it up its agonizing to put down. I got this book to help study for seminary, but I think absolutely anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of God, the catechism, or just are curious about theology would enjoy this book. Highly recommended. -NdN

I wasn't sure about this commentary at first, but it has opened my eyes to a number of areas in my life that needed to be addressed. This commentary on the WLC breaks down Christian teaching to such granularity it makes it easy to see areas in your life that may have been abandoned to sin.If you want to make more sense of Christian teaching, and abandon much of the "feel good" teaching in the Church theses days and then get back into who our faith should look, give this book a read.

I am reading through this commentary in a deliberate and slow fashion to learn these wonderful doctrines of our God. I am only about 25% complete, but I don't expect the quality to change so I thought it safe to comment now. This commentary is wonderful. Scripture references are given for each question, and each question is expounded upon with more questions and answers provided by Vos. I think the text and teaching is wonderful and I am thankful that I bought this commentary. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to enlarge his/her understanding of God and His works.

I have been using this book for my bible study group for past few weeks, and these teenagers are showing great interests. I noticed that they are asking more and more relevant questions and actively participating in discussions. This book has numerous sub questions and answers in the commentary section which covers many practical areas of our lives. This is a great material that any Christian can benefit from ! Highly recommended !p.s. Please avoid the Kindle version, which is hardly legible.

I enjoyed the melding of history and architecture in presenting significant structures. I think I may have even figured out what a one-pen log cabin is. I'm not an architect so a little background on the architectural styles would be helpful. Lots of pictures and clear, concise text make it an easy read. I bought this as I have a trip to Nashville planned this summer and will be looking for the structures of interest to me. The book does not tell you which buildings are open to the public.

About the Author

His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok (1933–2004) was a prominent teacher in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism who was recognized as a terton and renowned for his mastery of Dzokchen and his visionary activities, including the establishment of the nonsectarian Buddhist community of Larung Gar, one of the largest monastic settlements in the world and a vibrant Buddhist teaching center that has contributed enormously to the resurgence of Buddhism in Tibet and China. Khenpo Sodargye was born in Tibet in 1962. He spent his early years herding yaks, and after attending Garzé Normal School entered Larung Gar Buddhist Institute in Sêrtar, becoming a monk in 1985 under the great Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoché. Khenpo served Rinpoché as his personal and teaching interpreter on overseas tours in Asia, Europe, and North America as well as at Larung Gar, where he is now abbot. He has taught and translated the Dharma for over thirty years and has lectured on Buddhism and social issues in over a hundred universities around the world. His books in Chinese have sold hundreds of thousands of copies.

Extras is the unexpected final book in the Uglies series, following what was originally touted as a trilogy. The series is set in a dystopian future in which the ideas of beauty and conformity are the central ideals of the society. This book takes place a few years after Tally's story ended and centers on Aya Fuse. While conformity is less of a "thing" than it once was, beauty still remains as a measure of worth. But is apparently no longer enough to be beautiful OR to be unique. In Aya's city, being famous was the primary goal. The more famous you are, the higher your "face rank" is and that rank is the currency upon which her society is based.There are pretty specific cliques within her fame-obsessed world. There are the tech heads, those that are obsessed with the newest technology. There are also the surge monkeys, those who are obsessed with the newest and weirdest plastic surgery trends in their quest for physical attractiveness. And then there are the kickers, those obsessed with tracking down the latest story, the latest gossip, the latest bit of news. These are posted on feeds, techy versions of our blogs. Those whose face ranks are at the low end are the extras, the climbers who are obsessed with raising their ranks. Aya is an extra with a face rank so low that no one knows who she is. And she is obsessed with changing that. When she stumbles upon a mysterious group of girls, it changes everything for her. Most of the book focuses on Aya and her friends and they are all important to the story. But we also see Tally and her crew again, brought into the story at important moments. There are a ton of twists and turns in the plot, and quite a few surprises.In many ways, this is a timely book for this day and age. It confronts the ideas of beauty and fame both, and turns it on edge in an extreme way that makes you think. There are also themes of ethics and morality that present themselves in interesting, even if subtle, ways.There is no question that I loved this series and the thoughts it provoked. But I can't help but wish that perhaps it took all of these themes just a bit further. Like any good dystopian story, the author criticizes current society and focuses on aspects of it that are disturbing in their potential for disaster. He took those things to extreme levels and based the world of his books on those aspects. Beauty, conformity, fame... all of these things have the potential for disaster. And all of these things are questioned. But in the end, Tally still becomes Pretty and Aya still becomes famous. True, as characters they have questioned those things and they are aware of the darker side, but they still became the very things that are at the center of controversy. While both of these girls rebelled against the system, they both benefitted from it and I am not sure that was the intended message. Of course, I do tend to over think things!My Recommendation: This is an well-written series with some important issues as the focus. It is engaging and thought-provoking and a fantastic reading experience.

My favorite thing about dystopian fiction is their ability to give me a different perspective on our world, culture, and society. Dystopian novels push me to really consider the world that we live in and see a little bit of our reality in the dystopian world, to see the potential for what our world could become. Uglies is one of those novels... one that made me really think about some fundamental issues that are present in our own culture.Every dystopian world is a the result of a utopian effort to eliminate those things considered to be detrimental to society. For the world of Uglies, that is nonconformity and extremes. Set about three hundered years in the future, the world is otherworldly high-tech and the government provides everything to its people, even the extreme cosmetic surgery that is a major part of it's culture. At 16, each person receives cosmetic surgery that transforms them from an "ugly" to a "pretty." Prior to surgery, each person can choose what their future self will look like within the governmentally mandated standards of beauty. The lines between ugly and pretty are not just visual, but physical as well. Once transformed, new pretties cross the river to live in beautiful condominiums where, for the time being, their only job is to be beautiful and to have fun. Later, they will have other operations in conjunctiuon with the passage of time. Eventually they will have surgery to turn them into "Middle Pretties," those who are adults with jobs. And later they move on to become "Crumblies," our senior citizens.Tally Youngblood is the protagonist, about to turn 16 and looking forward toi her operation. Her best friend Peris has already had his operation and she is feeling the strain that comes between Pretties and Uglies. Shortly before she has her operation, she meets Shay, another Ugly. They become fast friends, hoverboarding and pulling the pranks that are a part of Ugly tradition. Shay is different from anyone she has ever known, balking against the surgery. Tally ignores that, but is forced to deal with it when Shay runs away just before their shared birthday. When she goes, she leaves Tally a note with cryptic directions that she doesn't initially understand. On the morning of her surgery, Tally is taken instead to Special Circumstances... a paramilitary division of the government that enforces the rules. There she is given an ulitmatum to give up Shay or never get her surgery to become a Pretty. This is the motivation behind the plot of the novel as Tally discovers things about herself, about her friends, about the world, and about her own feelings.This is a character-driven novel with important themes to consider. The concept of identity is a big part of the storyline. The government has created and mandated these surgeries in order to create conformity. Extreme individuality is considered to be a disruptive aspect of past societies, creating a standard of appearance that even removes racial markers. Beauty is dictated by those standards, a nod to the image-obsessed society that we now live in. But beauty almost loses its meaning among the Pretties, when everyone is beautiful. Uglies think of themselves as almost temporary, fUlawed. After all, they will be "fixed" when they turn 16. Even the personalities and personal dynamics change when they move from Ugly to Pretty, underlying the idea that we are defined by our appearance.The characters are well-developed and easily relatable in different ways. Because of the wide range of characters along the Ugly-Pretty spectrum, there were lots of perspectives and thoughts about the world. Some of the characters made you really think about the choices you might make for yiourself if in their position. There are undoubtedly things that are tempting about the Pretty part of society, but at the same time, the implications are frightening. G. J. Meyer is the author of three popular histories: A World Undone: The Story of the Great War; The Tudors: The Complete Story of England’s Most Notorious Dynasty; and The Borgias: The Hidden History. Meyer received a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism from Harvard University. I've read several hundred books on WW1. I was surprised-- maybe shocked-- by how much "new" stuff I got from this book.Especially when you consider it's not particularly large.For a one-volume "general history" of the ENTIRE war, it contains a remarkable amount of interesting and intriguing facts, mostly put in context with interesting stories.It's a great read, and, if a person wanted to keep JUST ONE book on WW1, this would be my recommendation.

This is, without doubt, the best history book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. Meyer has managed to be highly readable and informativeat the same time. I had no insight into WWI at all, and now I'm tempted to re-read this 700 page book immediately because I couldn't put it down the first time. He doesn't just hit the reader with names, places, statistics and endless war logistics and battles. It's all there, but in context, as he intersperses "background" chapters between telling of the progress of the war itself. Please Mr. Meyer, write another book about the time between the two great wars!

This book is part of the pile I’m wading through to research a new story idea. I know I want to set it in England sometime between the end of the first world war and just after the second, but I don’t know exactly when. So, I figured I’d start with the first world war and work my way forward. This book is an excellent overview of the whole thing. The war is such a massive topic that it is almost impossible to cover everything, but this succeeds for the most part. Meyer covers everything in chronological order, so you get a feel for what was happening everywhere at any given time. He also includes small sections of historical background between each chapter the provides valuable insight into things like the history of the Balkans, the Junckers, and the Hohenzollerns. The only area that I thought was a little lacking were details on the war in Italy, but that is a minor quibble. It’s quite long, and really gives you the sense of the kind of meatgrinder the war was. I highly recommend it for anyone new to the topic.

Thinking about the First World War centennial, I picked up “A World Undone,” G. J. Meyer’s fairly recent (2006) and highly detailed account of the conflict. I don’t have the credentials to evaluate the quality of the scholarship, but the lengthy book certainly conveys the scale of the calamity and the scope of the human suffering it caused.And yet the war was almost an accident—petty conflicts and diplomatic miscommunications sparking mechanized slaughter on a scale unforeseen even by the generals and politicians so ineptly managing it. Even more sobering, the 1918 Armistice and subsequent Treaty of Versailles did little more than set the stage for World War II.“A World Undone” conveys all of this with different degrees of success, sometimes overwhelming readers with battlefield strategies and sometimes moving them to feel what modern war was like for soldiers and civilians alike. As it should be, “A World Undone” is profoundly unsettling, maybe especially for readers who think we live in the worst of times today.

Not much new here but a good general overview of WWI. An excellent book on the causes is Clark's "The Sleepwalkers". Meyer overlooks the fact that France had loaned Russia enormous sums prior to the outbreak of war with the particular aim of tying the Russians to France in an alliance against Germany. Meyer's pretty good on the dynamics of Britain's involvement, the Home Rule issue and Grey's essentially duplicitous nature. He's better on Wilson's actions in getting America involved. Simply put, the US had loaned Britain and France so much money by the third year of the war that the Americans couldn't afford to let them lose. The more history I read and the older I get the more I realize that if you can follow the money trail you can generally figure out why things happen. Well written, easy to read. Good introduction for someone new to this subject.

Never before have I read a book with so much information presented in such a logical, easily digestible way. Like many "history buffs" I know plenty about World War II but much less about the war twenty years prior that caused it. This book changed that. What I like most are the background sections on the key players interspersed throughout the book - such a unique but great method to keep the reader learning without bogging down the narrative. If the book started with all of that background, I am sure many readers would get dissuaded from finishing it because it's not quite as interesting as the war itself. Once you're invested in the story of the war, however, the background on the key players is fascinating. Highly recommended.

World War 1 has always held a special fascination for me.for one thing Americans care to know little about it because American troops didn't get into the combat until the last 6 months or so of the war. Also, it was an era before TV and radio. I suspect even Americans living at that time must have understood little about it as well. Yet, it was the conflict that set in motion all the other conflicts of our time. It's causes were more interesting that those of the Second World War. In the latter war, it was an open and shut case of Hitler wanting war at a time when no one else in Europe did. On the contrary, historians of the First World War are not in agreement on its causes or even who or which nation is primarily to blame for it. The battles of the First World War were slaughter fests over blasted, moonscaped earth conjuring up images of Armageddon. GJ Meyer does a terrific job in answering all the big questions and leaves no major topic neglected. Essential reading for everyone wanting to know how the present came to be.

I am a big fan of this author's book "Walking Brooklyn" (also 30 walks) and I went through two copies as well as ordered it for the Kindle. I think I went on at least 27 of the 30 walks in it. I found her navigation directions easy to follow (unlike "Walking Chicago," by another author), as well as informative, and not overly directive. By "not overly directive" I mean that she never wrote anything like "veer from this route and you die." If I recall correctly I think she also suggested not limiting yourself? (Note however that in both the Brooklyn and Queens books there is an upfront note advising you to be careful, author and publisher have done all they can, but are not liable, don't be stupid, etc.)Today I took my first walk using this book. I chose one of the Astoria walks, because I lived in Astoria for 6-7 years (20 years ago), and I figured that with a walk through a neighborhood I was at least semi-familiar with, I could decently judge whether she was bringing in both the "must includes" as well as other sites, and being informative as she did so.On the walk I took she hit it out of the park. It took me past the churches I expected, the huge pool in Astoria Park, and the Socrates Sculpture Garden. Along the way she pointed out former mansions I'd encountered on other walks with friends, churches I'd never given a second's thought to, and was just as informative about sites along the way as I'd seen in her Brooklyn book.She also, interestingly, made no mention of some adjoining blocks which have been deliberately given over to graffiti, the Welling Court Mural Project (on more streets than just Welling Court). I figure her silence can possibly be explained by each of these: 1) she doesn't need to point out something so visible, and may be leaving it as a surprise; 2) if it's like the former project 5 Pointz in Long Island City, you can't guarantee its permanence and so unlike a city park you shouldn't promise it being there. I knew I would be nearby, so I was alert; but I can't imagine anyone needing it pointed out to them.And, another plus, she mentions places to stop for a bit of refreshment along the way.I was very pleased with this walk. And based on her Brooklyn book, as well as this walk, I'm very much looking forward to the other 29 in this book.Update, March 13 2016. I have now been on several of the walks in this book, and while I continue to feel this book is every bit as good as her Brooklyn book and still deserves the five stars I've given it, I feel it's important to point out that Queens and Brooklyn are very different boroughs, and content of the walks are dramatically different. It's my sense that the Queens book tilts heavily on the residential aspects of the neighborhoods, while the Brooklyn neighborhoods often have a more industrial history to them. Regarding the Queens book itself, Onofri does a great job of laying out the neighborhoods' residential characteristics and histories and anecdotes of the churches and synagogues; but there are points where the inclusion of, say, a 9/11 memorial seems forced and the memorial itself not particularly overwhelming or worth crossing the street for. Your mileage may vary.

Queens is something of a forgotten borough, at least where tourists are concerned. Most tourists spend most or all of their time in Manhattan, and for good reason. Those tourists who are intrepid enough to venture outside that island, usually seem to walk the Brooklyn Bridge to that borough, and nothing else. Brooklyn has some utterly gorgeous neighborhoods, and for those who have seen a lot of Manhattan, the same author's book Walking Brooklyn is recommended. But few people, even New Yorkers, know just how much there is to see in Queens, and this excellent book goes a long way in rectifying this misconception. This book serves New Yorkers just as well as out-of-towners; and for everybody, walking in all sections of New York City is highly recommended. New York is the safest large city in the country. Each of the 30 walking tours described here has a lot of interest. The sites and sights mentioned range from interesting old neighborhoods to spectacular views of Manhattan's iconic skyline, from Hindu and Sikh temples to beautiful parks, from beachside boardwalks to stirring war memorials, from whimsical Victorian dwellings to surviving Colonial houses, from forgotten seafront "villages" to lovely nature trails. A large number of architectural wonders are thoroughly described. Each walk is about 3-4 miles (5-6 km) long. By the way, it is to be hoped that a similar book, preferably by the same author, will be released about walking in the Bronx, an even less-known but equally interesting area to explore. If a small gripe may be added, the descriptions of buildings do not always include the year of construction. Therefore, while it is strongly recommended to buy this book, it should best be used in conjunction with the equally superb architectural guide, AIA Guide to New York City.

I almost didn't purchase this book. I already speak English, what's to learn? Glancing at a few pages inside changed my mind. It's not enough to just speak English, it's more complicated than that. It pays to study the use of Irish English, as well as culture, before traveling there. People are the same the world over; courtesy and respect plus an effort to learn their ways are appreciated. They often use English in ways we do not. Otherwise you may live up to the stereotype of the intrusive and obnoxious American traveler!

This little book is an enjoyable and quick guide to traveling in Ireland. It is well-written and touches briefly on most every subject you will come across. Use it as a starting point to get you excited about your trip.

Informative. Gave a nice history of the culture and country. Ireland is a wonderful country to visit!

I always like to read such a book in preparation of going to a new country. It enhances my understanding, decreases my faux pas and enriches my experience.

I loved the history and narrative on origins of habits and phrases. However, I think some of the current information is dated and should be refreshed.

Pocket sized and packing with info and insight. This will fit right into my purse and be ready for inflight reference.

About the Author

Marc Lynch is professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University, where he is the director of the Institute for Middle East Studies and of the Project on Middle East Political Science. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, and a contributing editor at the Monkey Cage blog for The Washington Post. He is the codirector of the Blogs and Bullets project at the US Institute of Peace. He formerly launched and edited the Middle East Channel on ForeignPolicy.com. His most recent book, The Arab Uprising: The Unfinished Revolutions of the New Middle East, was called “the most illuminating and, for policymakers, the most challenging” book yet written on the topic by The Economist. His other books include Voices of the New Arab Public: Iraq Al-Jazeera, and Middle East Politics Today, selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Book, and State Interests and Public Spheres: The International Politics of Jordan's Identity. The New Arab Wars outlines the regional conflicts in the Middle East and the political and ideological factors involved. This book is effectively a political science book that can get the casual reader much more versed into the differences between the countries and the interest of regional powers in any given country. To get an understanding of what is going on in Syria, Libya with ISIS, Yemen, Egypt, etc... this book is a must read and can give a deeper insight into what various interests and why are driving the conflicts rather than the good and evil narratives that come through with too great abundance through the 24 hour news service.The New Arab Wars discusses recent events in the middle east focusing on Syria, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain and Tunisia. Despite most headlines trumpeting ideological reasons for who should be in charge the author discusses which regional powers have direct interests and spheres of influence concerns in the various countries. In particular in the Middle East there are those fearful of the rise of Iran and its sphere of influence, Saudi Arabia with the UAE and Qatar as an opposing interest in favor of the Muslim brotherhood. Due to the competing interests both political and ideological there is an abundance of spin that comes out of the news trying to gather support. Furthermore the willingness to finance groups who would further certain groups political goals has led to a massive proxy war in the region as arms have been fed into tribal and ideologically driven groups for often quite shallow reasons. The US has been far less willing to fund and expand their war effort so much of the conflict is due to the escalating proxy war of regional powers with deep pockets. It is tragic as the human side of the equation is what is suffering the most by far.The New Arab Wars gives a window into the political science of the conflicts in the Middle East. The author discusses how the promotion of democracy as an ideal that is pushed by the US cannot be taken at face value as Bahrain had the support of the US in using force to suppress civil unrest but elsewhere did not due to the closer relationship of the US with Bahrain. Furthermore the fall of the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt whose election was a manifestation of a move toward democracy was a tragic step back for the country that should have been stabilized by the US. There is an inherent conflict of interest in the power struggle in the Middle East. The allies of the US are not democratic so the idea that for current events the US will put ideology above regional relationships is flawed. The balance of power is the center of concern in the region and sectarian conflict the norm. Democracy leads to majoritarian outcomes which are destabilizing and the regional conflicts are real between Saudi, Iraq, Iran and Qatar. The conflict and proxy war that is being fought in Syria was inevitable given the intrinsic interests known ex-ante and though there are very obvious moral dimensions to the conflict there are many issues under the hood if one looks at the regions history and associated parties. Very informative and timely.

Marc Lynch (aka blogger "Abu Aardvark") wrote the best account of the Arab Spring uprisings in his 2012 The Arab Uprising: The Unfinished Revolutions of the New Middle East. This follow-up account does a masterful job of placing those uprisings in context. It is well-written, easily accessible, and compact account of the unraveling of the regional order in the Arab World by one of today's top experts on the region. Lynch's greatest strength is in succinctly detailing the multiple forces driving events, illustrating the complexity of the problem without getting bogged down in tangents or excess detail.Lynch draws a direct line from the crushing Arab autocracies of the 1990s and early 2000s to today's terror and civil war. Lynch's account balances local conditions and regional order, detailing how the U.S. "War on Terror" increased local despots' freedom to crush their own populations. He draws on his own deep knowledge of Arab-language media sources to support his claim that the erosion of U.S. leverage in the region is the product of the invasion of Iraq and close ties to dictators, rather than policy missteps by President Obama. Not all readers will agree with Lynch's argument, but his book makes a powerful contribution to the policy discussion.

Ah! This is how books were meant to be written.Professor Lynch's book deftly combines a sophisticated yet extremely timely review of Arab Spring with a political scientist's appreciation for history, statistics, and theory. The strength of the writing, the incorporation of Arab sources, and the appropriate timeliness of the topic was definitely the "gateway" to my enjoyment of the book.But, MORE than simply a book about The New Arab Wars, this book is ultimately a detailed set of case studies about nonviolent resistance. Any person who believes in making a positive difference, and who also realizes the extent to which effective implementation will make or break the success of an effort, would appreciate Professor Lynch's thoughtful review of the Arab Spring to-date.While I was attracted to this book because I wanted a guide to the modern Middle East, I would recommended it to anyone who wants to take a serious role in a cross-sector organization, as a strategist, as a practitioner, or as a political leader. You probably need at least some basic context of the Middle East to fully appreciate the book – but you don't need too much at all!Thank you Professor Lynch for such an incredible contribution, and for making those of us who are practitioners more effective at what we do.PS. As a follow up, I can't help but wonder whether "we" (the U.S., U.S. universities, and ideally others – my "we" is loosely defined) could offer free modules on governance and government institutions to anyone with a refugee status. Probably shorter than a masters degree but longer than a summer. And probably residential programs. High-quality programming in this area – obviously with the right people in place to ensure access to the program – could begin to build the leadership skillsets of those who have been impacted by the suffering that Professor Lynch's book details so vividly.
