From the Inside Flap

A study of primitive people which, for beauty of...style and concept, would be hard to match." -- The New York Times Book Review In the 1950s Elizabeth Marshall Thomas became one of the first Westerners to live with the Bushmen of the Kalahari desert in Botswana and South-West Africa. Her account of these nomadic hunter-gatherers, whose way of life had remained unchanged for thousands of years, is a ground-breaking work of anthropology, remarkable not only for its scholarship but for its novelistic grasp of character. On the basis of field trips in the 1980s, Thomas has now updated her book to show what happened to the Bushmen as the tide of industrial civilization -- with its flotsam of property rights, wage labor, and alcohol -- swept over them. The result is a powerful, elegiac look at an endangered culture as well as a provocative critique of our own. "The charm of this book is that the author can so truly convey the strangeness of the desert life in which we perceive human traits as familiar as our own....The Harmless People is a model of exposition: the style very simple and precise, perfectly suited to the neat, even fastidious activities of a people who must make their world out of next to nothing." -- The Atlantic

This is a detailed, fascinating, and even beautiful account of the author's field study of the Kung! Bushman. Along with the Australian aborigines, the Bushman of the Kalahari desert, who inhabit an arid tableland in southwest Africa, are considered one of the two most primitive cultures in existence. The Bushmen aren't native to the Kalahari but were forced there as a result of conflicts with the white man and other tribes after the 17th century. Thomas gives a detailed account of their way of life and how they are able to survive in one of the most desolate places on earth. The Bushmen are very short of stature, averaging only 4 feet, 10 inches tall, and their skin has a yellowish tinge that is different from the blacker skin of their surrounding neighbors. The Kalahari has no surface water, and the rare rainfall immediately dries up. One of the few ways they get moisture as well as food is the tsama melon, which grows underground. The tsama melons are so important that the rights to a particular locale are inherited, which is unusual among the Bushmen. To survive in this harsh environment, the Bushmen have become expert botanists and can identify over 300 different kinds of plants, and they hunt antelope with poisoned arrows. Marriage among the Bushmen can occur at a very early age, but for women it is considered inappropriate to become fully sexually active and to marry before the age of 12. After having been almost completely wiped out between the 17th and the 19th century through conflicts with other tribes and the white man, there are now about 50,000 Bushmen inhabiting the Kalahari.Years later, when I saw the movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy, I recalled my first encountering the Bushmen in Thomas's wonderful little book. Several years after that, I had the opportunity to hear Jamie Uys speak, the south African director of the movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy, and he also described what it was like to work with and live in the Kalahari with the Bushmen during the making of his movie. Both he and Thomas commented that there was something very likeable about the Kalahari Bushmen, who now live very peaceably in their little arid paradise with relatively little conflict and strife. Well, paradise isn't exactly the word for the inhospitable environment where they live, but nevertheless the Bushmen came across in both Thomas's and Uys's accounts as overall quite happy and content with their life. Ever since reading this book, I have thought it ironic to consider that the more advanced cultures in other parts of the world, including those of us in the modern western countries, who are considerably more advanced, probably live no more happy and less stressful lives than the primitive Bushmen. Of course, one must be careful about the "Noble Savage" fallacy, but in the case of the Bushmen it seems to be true. This book is an updated edition of the one I read many years ago in college. Overall a classic study that takes its place alongside other great anthropological classics of Africa like Colin Turnbull's The Forest People, about the pygmies.

Folks who spend their lives staring at computer screens in vast corporate cubicle farms have a powerful tendency to drift off into vivid daydreams of gathering nuts, roots, and melons in wild country, with their hunter-gatherer ancestors, in a world without roads, cities, or alphabets. For them, there is treasure to be found in Elizabeth Marshall Thomas' book, The Harmless People. It's a beautiful book.Elizabeth was 19 when she first met the Bushmen of southern Africa. Her parents led three expeditions between 1950 and 1956 to study and film these people, who were among the last surviving hunter-gatherer societies in the world. The family spent a lot of time living in Bushmen camps, learned their language, and really got to know them. Elizabeth's book is a respectful and affectionate diary of her experiences with these people, and it is easy and enjoyable to read. The first expedition searched for several months before finding Bushmen, because Bushmen disappeared whenever they saw outsiders, who were a dependable source of trouble. Black and white outsiders frequently kidnapped them, and forced them to spend the rest of their days as farm laborers. They never returned home. Police would arrest them if they killed a giraffe in the desert, because giraffes were royal animals protected by the law. Arrested hunters were hauled away, and never seen again. The Thomas expedition eventually gained their trust because they developed a reputation for being very generous with their gifts, and for being unusually decent white folks.Long ago, Bushmen lived across much of southern Africa. But black and white farmers and herders aggressively seized the best lands, forcing the Bushmen into the Kalahari Desert, an exceedingly difficult place to live. Some places were so dry that the primary sources of water were melons, roots, and killed animals. Some winter nights dipped below freezing, leading to sleepless nights for the nearly naked people. Each group lived in a specific territory, sometimes several hundred square miles in area, which had clearly defined traditional boundaries. They intimately know every bit of their homeland, every rock, every bush, and every notable variation of the terrain. They knew exactly where different types of food could be found. They often had to move their camp every few days.Hunting was done with spears and bows and arrows. Arrows were treated with a poison made from the pupa of a beetle, which could take several days to kill the prey. After shooting, hunters waited two or three days, then tracked the wounded animal, hoping to find it dead. One unlucky hunter was fully impaled on the long horn of an angry buffalo who wasn't dead yet. Amazingly, he survived. Another time, hunters tracked a wounded wildebeest, and found it surrounded by 20 to 30 hungry lions. Amazingly, they drove away the lions, finished off the animal, and carried the meat back to camp.In the honey season, men climbed high into the trees to raid the hives, whilst being stung everywhere by a furious cloud of stingy bees. There was a long tradition of fatal falls. Hives that were frequently raided became fiercely defensive, viciously attacking all of the Bushmen on the ground, before the climbing began. Honey was definitely not a free lunch.Living in a harsh land, the Bushmen were very careful to sidestep the problems caused by overpopulation. The stability of their society was more important than the survival of every newborn, and these cultural values enabled their way of life to be sustainable. They believed that there was a period of delay between birth and becoming alive. If the newborn was crippled or deformed, it was promptly buried and forgotten. When conditions were strained, and it was not possible to feed more mouths, newborns were not kept. The Bushmen had no tools for contraception or abortion. To avoid the pain of infanticide, they frequently abstained from intercourse for long periods of time, when there was room for no more. Usually, childbirth was a joyful event, because the number of pregnancies was voluntarily limited.Thomas described the ongoing soap operas of camp life, and the inevitable friction that developed among people who lived in close contact with others all the time. Camp life was not a never-ending love fest. But great care was taken to avoid conflict, and to promptly defuse and resolve conflicts. Belongings were constantly kept in circulation via gift-giving to avoid jealousy. The fundamental keys to their success were cooperation and sharing. She presented us with a fascinating description of thriving in a challenging land. Bushmen life seemed to be far less dismal than life in corporate cubicle farms. Bushmen enjoyed healthy, satisfying, and meaningful lives, despite their lack of televisions, computers, cell phones, automobiles; despite being a cruelly persecuted minority; despite being surrounded by lions and leopards who enjoyed having children for lunch; despite the blast furnace summer days when the sand burned their feet. Life was good. They had what they needed.Thomas published her book in 1961. She returned to the region in 1986 and 1987 and discovered that the Bushmen had been blindsided by what is called sustainable development (i.e., catastrophic destruction). This inspired her to produce a revised edition, which was published in 1989, to bring us up to date. The Bushmen had been driven off their land and forced into villages, where their superiors treated them like the scum of the Earth. Their culture disintegrated into a nightmare of malnutrition, disease, alcoholism, homicide, and wage labor. People quit sharing, ate in secret, and hid purchases.Thomas summed up the new reality: "No Bushmen lack contact with the West and none is undamaged by it. And their own way of life, the old way, a way of life which preceded the human species, no longer exists but is gone from the face of the earth at enormous cost to the individuals who once lived it." Welcome to industrial civilization!Richard Adrian ReeseAuthor of What Is Sustainable

For those who are still interested in the extinct way of life of one of the most fascinating of human races, this book is a great read. The author and her father, brother and mother have lived with the Kung Bushmen and know more about them than any other person on earth. The narrative describes intimately the way of life of these hunter gatherers and the painful and sad way it has all ended just in the last 20 years. Yes, there are Bushmen families living in Namibia and Botswana today but most do not know how to track game, how to find edible roots and berries to eat or protect themselves from predators and nature. They wear discarded western clothes, smoke tobacco, drink heavily and die prematurely of treatable diseases and by their own hands. These people have lived for tens of thousands of years in conditions other people cannot endure and survived but they have become unwilling victims of modern encroachment. If one wants to read more try Paul Theroux's Last Train to Zona Verde.

This is an old classic, probably a half century old plus. But it is still a readable and informative book about the Kalahari and the traditional bush people's lives. I doubt there are many people left living that way any longer. I first read it years ago in college and then reread it before a recent trip to the Kalahari.

Wife's book:I like learning about this culture. They are under our noses and I never knew they existed. This book is for an anthropology class and my instructor happened to have written his own book on the subject, so he is full of knowledge and appreciation on the Bushmen of South Africa. The book is easy to read. I particularly like the 1989 version because it has an Epilogue with an update on the people. They have proven to be quite captivating.

The Uprising continues the popular dystopian trend in YA. Like most second books in a dystopian trilogy, the stakes are higher. The protagonists have escaped the oppressions of The Wheel, but they are in deeper trouble. This trouble leads them back onto The Wheel, in hope of saving all their friends. This book may sound like it is just the first book done again, but it is not. There are so many new things that come into play. Alenna and Liam know so much more than they did in the first book. And, The Wheel has changed. There's a new faction and the Monk makes a reappearance in an interesting way. Many characters from the first book reappear in different capacities. There are many new characters as well.I liked that we got to see the Resistance more in depth. It is always interesting to see how adults react to these situations that we usually see children involved with in YA dystopias. If you are a fan of The Maze Runner series, you should definitely check out this book. The Wheel has so many interesting obstacles that make for Alenna's adventures to be quite challenging. I give this book a 4/5.

4.5 STARSHow do I even express my love for this book? Lisa M. Stasse is a brilliant story teller and a PHENOMENAL world builder!! I was instantly sucked back into this world after reading the first book almost two years ago and loving it to pieces. Stasse made it easy to merge back into this world without too much difficultly, and held my interest with the thrilling plot, and heart-pounding action and adventure that took this book to a whole new level of awesome!!!I LOVED the cast of characters Stasee created, every single one of them!! Even the villains were pretty hardcore!! Alenna, the main character and only POV was one of the best female protagonist I've ever read. She has all the character traits I love. Fierce, strong, a bada** fighter, caring, willing to fight until the end, and determined to bring down the corrupt government that stole everything from her and the ones she loves. But what I loved about her character was the growth she developed since book one. When she first arrived on the island, she was unsure of herself, naive, I wouldn't call her weak, but she didn't know how to fight or to handle the stress of the island. But throughout book one and two she built up to the be strong, fierce, lovable, and determined character that she is in this book!!This dystopian is definitely one of the better ones that I've read. I loved the world-building and the prison island where life expectantly is only 2 years after you arrive. The twist and turns of this series is just so thrilling and non-stop, that it keeps you literally on the edge of your seat anticipating the next twist! I enjoyed that it always kept me second guessing what would come next!THE PLOTChoose A Tribe.Watch Your Back. And Don't Stop RUNNING....THE UPRISING HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN...Alenna never imagined she would be one of the kids who would be sent to Island Alpha--AKA The Wheel, a prison Island for kids who test positive for a high capacity of brutal violence. But she was, and now she finds herself fighting against the same people who ruined her and her families lives. But being sent to the wheel was really a blessing in disguise. Even with the tortures obstacles she endured and conquered, because what she found on Island Alpha changed her world, forever! After barely escaping Island Alpha alive, Alenna and her boyfriend Liam crashed on Destiny Station, and right into the hands of rebel scientist who are secretly working to overthrow the UNA, better known as United Northern Alliance and reinstate freedom back to the people. Her and Liam are reunited with other kids from the Wheel who too have been rescued by the rebel scientist looking to recruit and build their numbers.Their plan is simple:Bide their time, prepare scientifically to go against the UNA, regroup with other rebel bases, and then when all is set in motion and ready to go, return to the wheel and take control over it. And then build their numbers with the kids they recruit on Island Alpha, and then eventually, when their ready, return to the UNA and destroy their corrupt government and bring them down once and for all!!Simple right? I think not.All does not go as planed for their group, and they will have to fight every step of the way just to stay alive. Returning to the wheel was not as easy as they hoped, and when they return to find a new leader, one even more malicious and organized then the Monk, the drones last leader, they know they have their work cut out for them, and that hope of ever making it off of Island Alpha again, is looking to be slim to none...Overall, THE UPRISING was a fantastic second installment that had my blood pumping and heart racing the entire time. THE UPRISING has left me eager in anticipation to dive back into this series with the conclusion that I know if it's anything like this book will be beyond EPIC!! If you love the dystopian genre, with plenty of Sci-f twist, and a county on the brink of civil war, fighting to regain their freedom, with tons of action and adventure to keep you reading late into the night, then THE UPRISING is one sequel you DON'T want to miss!!!

There is non-stop action by characters and machines alike in this one!Allena is rescued by a group of rebel scientists and takes refuge in Antarctica, the location of their station. She is naturally trying to determine if her Mom us alive. She is also wondering about David, Meira and several others from the wheel. The end mission of this rebel group is to train and then launch an assault on the United Northern Alliance. Massive complications occur and 'The Uprising' is the story of the assault. The Feelers return once again but this time they are a much advanced version. Airships and drones also come into the action. And, a group called the Travelers make an appearance. Plus, there are some "Hoofers"! What exactly are they? For sure, they are some incredible "critters".As if any extra action is needed, toss in trying to locate the specimen archive before it is destroyed. The ride in the airship will make the reader want to get back on terra firma, for sure! The "gadgetry" is superb with amazing descriptions. This is a tightly woven plot mixed with many amazing and strong characters. Several questions remain at the end concerning some of the star players. The adventure is on and 'The Uprising' is about to take off on several fronts...Highly recommended.

I wanted to read The Uprising because I enjoyed The Forsaken. I don't remember much over a year out besides I liked the strength of Alenna and related to her finally finding a place after feeling like she didn't fit in in the "regular" world. Aleena is so tough and her and Liam have become legends since escaping from the wheel and coming back to the rebel camp. But things aren't easy there, they have been questioned about who they knew, and aspects about life there. The romance in this one was good though it wasn't everything I hoped it would be. It was like they made their connection already and it was just assumed they were close. I was just wanting a little more heat. There was some now that I think about it, at goodbyes and moments of great suspense. Some good kisses and some very sweet declarations of how they feel. I guess it comes down to I wish they were together every second and that they didn't have to go through as many hardships. But then, that is what makes the plot so exciting and on my toes. There were lots of surprises in this one. From continued answers to betrayals and places they end up to returning characters. There were also some new characters that I came to like and respect that I didn't expect. The ending wrapped up the themes of this book well, but I was still longing to know what would happen next and what would become of Aleena and Liam and their friends and family.Bottom Line: Must read for Forsaken fans.

This happened in my hometown of Cincinnati. I was a young teenager when this happened, I remember hearing about the murder and was curious about what really happened. It was very well written, very informative, but I wish there had been more pictures, like Mr. Bergen & Mrs. Bergen, theother people involved in the investigation, etc. Was curious if I would recognize any of the people. I had never heard anything about it possibly being Mr. Bergen that killed his wife. Thanks for a great history of the case for me.

Well written and a great read

First of all, the title is of this turgid tome,is very misleading. Nothing really shocking.....a lady who can use a sewing machine! A fact that has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING!! The only shocking thing about this case is how BANAL it all was. Terrible book...about a tawdry and trashy woman...total waste of time.

disjointed, no continuity.no flow, hard to follow the story line, the storyline jumps around to much, irrelevant information.

I won an autographed copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I enjoyed the book. Thank you for picking me to pre-read your latest book. The author did an enormous amount of research. I like the subject of this book and from the printout he sent along with this book, he seems to truly enjoy writing about shocking crimes. I think the author has a definite gift for "true crime" writing and capturing minute details to make this a very interesting and thought provoking book. I think he did an excellent job with his characters and storyline. For me, some true crime books are hard to read due to details being presented in textbook fashion and that makes it easy for me to put them down. This book is not hard to read and definitely not textbook...I read it straight through. The details alone are amazing and he included actual pictures. Without historians like Mr Jones, we are apt to forget our history and the important details.

Richard Jones knows how to write books! The massive hours put into research for this book could have translated into something boring and uninteresting. But thanks to his expertise, however, this book read WAY TOO SMOOTHLY. I could not put it down! If true crime is something you enjoy reading, this book is for you. Thank you Richard O. Jones, for bringing this horrific part of Cincinnati's history to light for so many! You have done a marvelous job sir! Look forward to reading your other masterpieces :)

Richard Jones has written a comprehensive book on a case that never fails to fascinate. The murder is a true "who dun it" because really, who did do it? I have read several tellings of Edith/Edythe and the hapless husband but this was the most revealing. I couldn't put it down!

I liked the book but it was a bit slower than some of the other books I've read. I would have like to read about the trial of the husband of the nudes victim.

Peedie is a small, yellow gosling who sometimes forgets things. Olivier Dunrea's illustrations are simple yet colorful - absolutely delightful and appealing to all, yes even adults. Peedie wears a red baseball cap wherever he goes until one day he puts it in a secret place. Of course he forgets where he put it and so a search commences? Where does he find it? On top of an egg :)One of our preschoolers favorite in our home library.

excited when books arrived in good time. all the books i ordered arrived together. the book arrived in the condition as was stated in description and the price of the book was reasonable. I am very happy with my purchase of this book. Very fun book for kids and very excited to have it in our collection of childrens books. Very prompt shipping and product arrived in excellent time and condition. very very happy with my purchase and will definitely buy more of these kinds of books.

really cute books

This book and all the others in this series exceeded my expectations. My granddaughter, who is 18 months loves them. She has memorized parts of them.

Gossie is my sons favorite book so i ordered a bunch of the "friends" books. the stories in them are just OK though. some dont really make much sense either.

We love all the Olivier Dunrea books, my daughter and I fell in love with them at the library and I decided to get this one and BooBoo because our local library doesn't have them. Its worth the buy, these are great books!

Wonderful sweet book.

My kids love these books- fun characters, simple/relatable stories, cute illustrations. I withhold the 5th star because my husband does not share our enthusiasm.
