I read this in a book club and it's not something I would typically read but I am glad I did.This is the story of Tess Derbyfield. When we first meet her she is 16 years old living in poverty with her alcoholic parents. Her father has just learned that he has lineage dating back to the dUrbervilles, a royal family. Upon hearing this, they want to send their oldest daughter, Tess, off to a neighboring town where a family lives that has the d'Urberville name to become a servant and perhaps claim title to the d'Urberville name and even marry a wealthy gentleman. What they do not know is this family only adopted the d'Urberville name to further their business endeavors.Upon first meeting Alec, the sham d'Urberville, Tess's life just goes from bad to worse. She meets one tragedy after another, some caused by fate, some caused by bad decisions.This books leaves you feeling sad and hopeless but is a critique on the way women were treated in 1890's Victorian England.This book had good characters but I thought the development was weak. Harry uses great description of land and locations to where you feel fully immersed in the world of his creation.This story is not for everyone. There are points where you will cry and there are points where you are on the edge of your seat just hoping that the stars will align and fate will come through for Tess.

It was wonderful to return to this classic work of literature that I read during my high school years. The narrator spoke with an English accent which was perfect for this story. The only liberty she took was to make contractions for Thomas Hardy’s two words.Hardy’s depiction of Tess was magnificent to the extent that we, his readers, really knew her complex being far more completely than we would know any living person or persons depicted in contemporary novels.I enjoyed both hearing the Audible plus following the written text of the novel. I have other classic works of literature lined up to read after this incredible work of art.

I have bought several of the Penguin Classics Hardcover series. Each cover is beautifully done and the novels themselves are excellent quality. The bookstores tend to sell these editions for $25.00, so I'm always excited to see them on this site for roughly half the price. As a couple of others have stated, the covers look great on bookshelves. I look forward to buying more from this collection.As for the novel itself, Tess of the D'Urvervilles is one of my favorite novels of all time. Rich, complex, heartbreaking, and beautifully written.

This is one of the great English novels, probably among the first five in distinction among the novels of the late 19th century. It is certainly Hardy's most accomplished novel. "Tess" is set in Hardy's version of the Wessex region of England, where, for example, the city of Dorchester becomes Casterbridge. This is the story of Tess Durbeyfield. The Durbeyfields used to be known as the d'Urberviiles, centuries before, when they were rich and powerful. As with almost all of Hardy's novels, the evocation of the boggy hill country of southern England is so closely intertwined with nature, that one begins to smell the heady aromas of the countryside. Coincidentally, Roman Polanski's finest film is "Tess", Nastassia Kinski is the perfect Tess, Polanski shows usthe innocence of the girl, how its purity is the reason for her downfall. The scene in which she bites into a strawberry is the ultimate seduction scene for PG audiences.

"Tess of the D'Urbervilles" is Thomas Hardy's most famous protagonist and one of literature's most tragic heroines. At first, she reminded me very much of Ibsen's Nora, but as the book came to a close I came to realize that Tess is far more emotionally complex than Nora: much moodier, much prouder, much more romantic, and ultimately much more tragic.The story is pretty well-known to most people. Tess is a young beautiful maiden who has a lazy drunk for a father and a manipulative opportunist as a mother. At a young tender and naive age she is essentially raped by her well-to-do cousin, and it's a stigma that haunts her in the small-minded provincial town where she lives. She soon meets the man of her dreams, a clergyman's romantic son who finds a kindred soul in Tess, and while Tess does her best to maintain her distance eventually she gives way to her passion, and marries Angel Clare. Though she has lost her virginity to another man Tess remains pure and free, and against the warnings of her mother she forces herself to tell her new husband of her past. And because her husband is very young, very proud, and ultimately constricted and contained by the conservative pettiness of the people around him he decides to flee from Tess. And this sets the stage for Tess's ultimate downfall.The themes and plot of this novel have been copied copiously in Western culture, but what makes this novel such a masterpiece is the emotional force and beauty of Tess's characters, and it would be almost impossible for anyone else to replicate the sincere sympathy Hardy has for his most famous heroine. Literary critics can always point to the depth in meaning and symbolism of the novel -- the themes of innocence, spirituality, and romantic passion course wildly throughout the novel -- but it's Tess's sense and pursuit of love, her utter and pure and completion to the man she loves, that will continue to move readers for centuries to come.

I like Penguin Books for its supplemental background information and I also enjoy Thomas's Hardy nearly as much as any classical writer that I've read. This is the third Hardy book I've read. One of his books, Far From the Madding Crowd, I read recently, and another book, Jude the Obscure, I completed over thirty years ago. I'm excited about the fact that he has a supply that I can continue reading for the rest of my life. I plan to read at least two more of his books, the Return of the Native and The Mayor of Casterbridge, which will be all of his most popular novels for me, and then I will see how I feel about reading more than that.

I was expecting a historical discussion of the genre, but it is a collection of excerpts from lesbian pulp fiction "classics". They are a good sample of the literature, but get it for that rather than an exposition on the genre (that's limited to the Preface/Introduction.

Even though I work at the Mazer Lesbian Archives and have these pulps available to me, this book was an education for me.This is an interesting book that surprised me with some facts. It has often been said that the characters in most of these "50's pulps" were victims who were destined to a completely tragic end. This is not true as often as I had thought.I love the personal experience the editor shares of her own introduction with the pulps and Ann Bannon specifically. It is always great to have a talented editor with a personal passion at the helm. Great fun!

I recently went on a lesbian 50's pulp novel binge, reading Ann Bannon's six books and two others that were mentioned in a couple wikipedia articles (Women's Barracks and Spring Fire). So I was delighted when it was pointed out to me on the Kindle forum that Lesbian Pulp Fiction edited by Katherine V. Forrest is available for the Kindle. (I'd heard of this book before, but hadn't ever bothered buying or reading it.)But I was a bit disappointed in the content. Reading the excerpts is fun. I'm doing one or two in between reading other books and it's a good way to decide what other titles I might want to track down for my collection. But information about lesbian pulps in general is what I was most interested in as a lesbian literature history lesson. The introduction gave a decent overview, but it left me wanting a bit more. I also noticed that there were a couple errors in the intro, which I would never have realized had I not already read the pulps I already mentioned.The information about the start of pulps, including lesbian pulps, was good. But most of the info was about specific titles and authors. Why did the pulp trend end? Why was there a lull in publishing lesbian books? Between the end of the pulp period and feminist and lesbian publishers finally getting a solid foothold in the 80's, not much was happening it seems. Or at least I'm not aware of what was going on (other than a couple authors) and I think exploring why and how things changed again would have been really informative and still tied in with the topic.I suppose that's of particular interest to me because I was a teen in the 70's and there weren't any lesbian books on the drugstore racks for me to stumble over! I was buying straight historical romances and bestsellers from the drugstore rack on my way home from school, and mostly oblivious to my own lesbianism. I could have used a bit of fictional enlightenment. It wasn't until after I came out in the mid 80's and actively tracked down lesbian books that I found them. I never would have guessed that, in this one regard at least, the 50's and 60's had an advantage.One thing that the pulp books I've read, and the excerpts included in this book, have demonstrated to me is how surprisingly positive some of the books and stories are. I've always heard the whole thing about how it was required for there to be no happy endings, the women usually ending up dead or with a man. And yeah, some of that goes on in these pulp novels. There are lots of mentions of how sick or unnatural lesbians are, etc. And in a couple of Bannon's books the characters are unlikable and commit reprehensible acts.Yet it's fascinating to see that many authors were getting around those restrictions and writing endings that weren't completely negative from a lesbian point of view and characters and relationships were often portrayed in a positive manner. I was especially surprised by the fairly blatant sex in some books. That whole idea of the 50's being so repressed and uptight certainly isn't supported here and that has been a very interesting revelation for me, having been born in the early 60's and growing up post-sexual revolution.The other main thing that I thought was missing from this book was an introduction to each excerpt from the pulp novels. The cover art and jacket copy is included at the start for each one, but I was expecting Forrest to write her own blurb about why she chose to include each novel and the particular excerpt of the book. Lesbian Pulp Fiction would have had a lot more depth for me if that had been true.Overall I still think this book is worth the money and time to read. It's an important period in lesbian history and lesbian fiction that is still very obscure. Reading this book is educational, enlightening, and entertaining.Kindle Note: Cleis Press unfortunately chose to do their Kindle edition in the Dreaded Topaz Format. This format is infamous among Kindle owners for the various problems it presents. In this specific case there are problems with letters in words being oddly spaced, either smooshed together or spaced far apart. Sometimes lines on the screen are oddly spaced also. But most frustrating is the images for each pulp novel excerpt. Not only is the cover an image, but the jacket copy that was on the front and back (much of it inflammatory or racy and thus what you want to read!) is part of the image. That means it's almost completely illegible when reading on the 6" Kindle. They may fare better on the DX, but I don't know. I'm gonna find my magnifying glass to see what I've missed!

Her protagonist, the real life Grace Marks, is an enigma. Convicted at age 16 of the murder of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper and lover, Nancy Montgomery, Grace escaped the gallows when her sentence was commuted to life in prison, but she also spent some years in an insane asylum after an emotional breakdown. Because she gave three different accounts of the killings, and because she was accused of being the sole perpetrator by the man who was hanged for the crime, Grace's life and mind are fertile territory for Atwood. Adapting her style to the period she describes, she has written a typical Victorian novel, leisurely in exposition, copiously detailed and crowded with subtly drawn characters who speak the embroidered, pietistic language of the time. Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood tells the true story of 19th century alleged murderess Grace Marks.At age 15/16, Grace Marks was convicted of killing her employer and his mistress with a fellow member of “the help”, James McDermott. Grace’s trial was highly publicized across Canada, the US, and Europe (she was an Amanda Knox of her time, if you will, more on that later.) Her story soon became both sensationalized and romanticized, and the true story seemed to fall by the wayside as the years went on.Throughout Alias Grace, Atwood illustrates a system inherently skewed against someone like Grace because of her sex, age, and socio-economic status. At one point, a character notes that if Grace had come from a wealthy family her “madness” wouldn’t have been handled as it truly was. After the murder trial, Grace’s death sentence was changed to life in prison. However, for the first part of her imprisonment she was committed to an asylum, where Atwood alludes to abuse and sexual assault. I do not doubt it of that period, especially with a woman in that situation.Alias Grace is a framed story, with Grace recounting her side of the story to young Dr. Simon Jordan. Dr. Jordan has foregone a traditional medical practice in favor of studying the mind and mental illness. As a forerunner of the field (although Dr. Jordan is fiction), he seeks to prove Grace’s innocence by uncovering the truth of the events, as well as Grace’s mental state. It goes without saying that in the 19th Century, the majority of mental illnesses were not yet “discovered”, researched, and diagnosed–thus, the individual likely would have been locked up and forgotten.I particularly enjoyed Grace’s friendship with fellow maid Mary Whitney, as well as her doctor-patient relationship with Simon Jordan. Mary Whitney is often a foil to Grace; an outspoken young woman in a time when such behavior was viewed with suspicion. In fact, Grace and Mary were so close that I sometimes wondered if there was a Fight Club situation going on with them. I won’t get into spoilers, but there is a hypnosis event that occurs toward the end of the book that will both jolt and chill the reader. For some reason, and perhaps just because of my own world view, I did not go into this book thinking Grace was guilty. On the contrary, I viewed her as an innocent up until the hypnosis, and even after that I wasn’t entirely sure of its validity. I know Atwood is fond of using isolated, perhaps unreliable narrators (i.e. pedestal in Handmaid’s Tale in which we don’t get the full picture, just her perspective). In reality, no one is truly sure if Grace was guilty or innocent. Although the system worked against her, much of the public opinion was that she was innocent–an opinion which would later precipitate her pardon after 29 years in prison. The reader often aligns with Dr. Simon Jordan’s evaluation of Grace, as we are figuring her out alongside him. And in the end, even we do not know the truth.Simon was an interesting character in his own right, as there are a few chapters from his point of view and even letters from and to him from family members and colleagues. If Simon is reflective of the reader, then we along with him are brought face to face with what anyone might do, or could do, in Grace’s situation. Can dreams and the unconscious so heavily influence our waking actions?Atwood’s main theme seems to be a comment on society’s pre-conceived notions about women, especially those imprisoned: if a woman is young and pretty, are people more inclined to believe her innocence? And if a woman is old and ugly, does that make her guilty? At the same time, can society accept a young and pretty woman to be evil enough to manipulate people into believing her while she did the crime after all? Is society threatened by a clever woman, full stop, and would they inherently be suspicious of her because of that trait? If Grace had not been so young and pretty, would she still have been given a life sentence? Perhaps if she was ugly she would have been hanged, because society is apt to treat women who do not align with traditional beauty standards poorly. If James McDermott was not involved at all, could society have accepted that Grace may have done it all herself? If James McDermott was not involved, would society still think Grace a manipulative whore or a besotted lovesick girl? Femme fatale or innocent maiden? These two roles are often perpetuated not only in media, but in our society as a whole, as if a woman cannot be anything but one of these two archetypes and nothing more. The greater point I believe Atwood is trying to argue is that women are more complex than falling solely into one category. And the people judging Grace Marks clearly wanted her to fit into one box, regardless of facts vs. the desired narrative. But women cannot be seen as one or the other, nor sensationalized or romanticized, cast entirely aside nor placed on a pedestal. Rather, women should be viewed with all strengths and weaknesses in tact.Sadly, we will probably never know the truth about Grace Marks, but Atwood’s novel calls attention to issues still prevalent today. How we view Grace will inevitably reflect our own worldview, as it was at the time of Grace’s trial. People will always believe what they want to believe, regardless of the truth.

Having really enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale, I was very excited to read Alias Grace and to see that it is a new series on Netflix. I really enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale but I have to say that I actually liked Alias Grace more. It might have been because it was based on a true story but the story was fascinating to me. Grace Marks is a prisoner, having been found guilty of the grisly murder of her employer and his housekeeper. She is said to have committed the murders of Nancy Montgomery and Thomas Kinnear with her coworker, James McDermott, who is a surly and jealous man. While she was initially sentenced to hang like McDermott, she is saved by her lawyer, who pleads with the court to consider her youth, and her sentence is commuted to a life term. Soon after she is imprisoned, she is committed to an asylum on account of fits and her amnesia surrounding anything to do with the crime. While she is treated with the worst of the time's psychiatric treatments, she still does not remember anything about the time when Montgomery and Kinnear are murdered. Years later, a young psychiatrist is brought in by a group trying to prove her innocence to try to help her remember more about the crime.My favorite part of this book would have to be the characters that Atwood has created, Nancy being one of my favorites. She is the perfect narcissist. She is jealous, manipulative and overly sensitive. One never knows where they stand with her as she can love you or hate you from day to day and minute to minute. Grace, herself, is actually quite likeable. She comes off as very intelligent in a very street smart way. I also think that she could be a very relatable character for many of us in that she is but a product of her past. While I didn't feel that Dr. Jordan's story added very much to the overall feel of the book, Grace's story was sad but very interesting. I was left wanting to know more. The writing style is sophisticated but still very easily readable. I really enjoyed this book and I believe that anyone who enjoys historical fiction, true crime or medical mysteries will enjoy this book, too.

I just received my copy from Amazon today, so I haven't had a chance to read all of the essays yet. From what I've seen thus far, though, I think the text is going to do justice to the images. And that's saying something. The book is high-quality coated paper throughout, with excellent printing and binding as one expects from the UNC Press. The images are beautifully presented, nearly full-page in size in most cases.This is a collection of vivid full-color Kodachrome images taken by a young Japanese-American man who was interned at the Heart Mountain, Wyoming, camp during World War II. He captured everyday life in the camp, and its environs, and these color images bring it to life amazingly. I've read many books and seen many images - photographic and drawn/painted - by internees, as well as accounts by anthropologists in some of the camps, but these are real eye-openers.As those who lived and experienced the events of the Second World War are leaving us, it is especially important to preserve and present to new audiences the documents of those experiences. This book is an outstanding contribution to that effort.

When I teach "A Separate Peace" to my sophomore English students, I make every effort to immerse them into the culture of World War II on the home front. We watch "Casabalanca," Walt Disney's "Der Fuehrer's Face," the Andrews Sisters singing "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," Abbott and Costello's classic "Who's on First" routine. I show clips of Ken Burn's "The War" that talk about rationing, war bond drives, and Pearl Harbor.Perhaps the most poignant scene is Daniel Inouye's first-hand account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This, of course, leads to a discussion of the Japanese-American internment camps.Detractors would say that this book sugar coats the experiences of more than 100,000 Japanese-Americans who were placed in these relocation centers for much of the war. Granted, the photos do little to show the hardship and isolation of life in the camps. Even living conditions--cramped quarters, communal latrines--are not the intent of this book.What it does show is the spirit and determination of the incarcerated to provide a sense of normalcy to their daily lives. With more than 70 photos--all but a handful in color and most of them full-page--Bill Manbo's images are a testament to the ability to retain humanity under inhumane conditions. Manbo and his family were sent to the camp at Heart Mountain in Wyoming in 1942 where these photos were taken.Sure, there are pictures of guard towers (p. 45), the starkness of the barracks and the landscape (p. 26), and a moving image of the photographer's son clutching a barbed-wire fence at the edge of the camp.However, most of the scenes are much more cheerful: dancers in traditional attire, parades, ice skating, residents wrestling in the sumo ring, family outings...and lots of family photos.In addition to the photos, there are three essays: "A Youngster's Life Behind Barbed Wire," "Camera in Camp" and "Unexpected Views of the Internment." Each essay is about ten pages.If you think you know everything about the Japanese-American internment experience, this book will shine a light in corners you haven't seen before. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

First color images of a Japanese Relocation camp are the most vivid way to see camp life. My sansei experience was only through words and black and white photos until Colors of Confinement opened my eyes. This beautifully photographed book fleshed out the lives of the Internees. I can recommend this book to everyone. This is a wonderful view of life and shows the strength and courage of so many Japanese Americans who are simply loyal Americans.

I am 81 years old and was one of the "internees" in a Concentration Camp in Granada Colorado for almost 4 years. Since we were not allowed cameras in our Camp, this pictorial book is a treasure trove of pictures of what Camp Life was for me at the age of 9-14.Great book of historical value!

Although I am a fan of black and white photography, this book of color photos is very striking.The backstory and the family upon which the majority of the photos are based (a father capturing with photos his young 6 year old son at the camp) will go to your heart. If one hasn't really thought about or known someone who was placed in the internment camp then perhaps you can identify with this young family of American citizens who lost everything and were placed in these camps for no crime. Honest, tax paying, patriotic people who got swept up and put in camps under the direct order of President Franklin D Roosevelt and then CA Gov Earl Warren. The only crime these Americans were guilty of was their ethnicity. Imagine that you were told that you had two weeks to get rid of your house, your business, your belongings and to report with your family to the authorities. Sent by train to a distant part of the country and forced to stay until the duration.This is an ideal book to have at home that will spark conversation -especially among young people who need to understand this dark chapter of American History. A great companion to this book would be to find one on the 442 'Go For Broke' Regimental Combat Team comprised of Japanese American citizens who volunteered to fight -despite the fact that many of them had families interred in the camps. Starting in 1944 this unit is considered to be the most decorated infantry regiment in the history of the US Army winning 21 Medal of Honors, 8 Presidential Unit Citations for Valor, etc earning it the name 'The Purple Heart Battalion.'

Amazing look at the past that puts the landscape I grew up looking at wondering what was once there and why. A horrible moment for so many loyal Americans scared by hysteria of war and racism that should never be repeated. This is a great color photo collection that brings context to history that can be utilized in any U.S. History course.
