I'm a retired university professor who taught logistics for 42 years at a large state university. I am now 73. During the last 15 years, as my career wound down and I then retired, I started to take myself less seriously and have become a voracious reader of novels. I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of books dealing with murders, thrillers, espionage, court room drama, etc. My favorite authors of this genre are David Baldacci, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Tom Clancy, Laurie King and Ken Follett. I believe that James Tucker's, NEXT OF KIN, compares very favorably to the novels of my favorite writers. I finished this book yesterday, and I am recommending it to all my friends who enjoy this type of entertainment. I look forward to the sequel of this book (I hope there is a sequel) to find out more about Ben.

The action-oriented plot and intriguing character development will keep you turning the pages. Next of Kin is a murder mystery threaded through multi-generational family histories with a terrific sense of place for New York scenes ranging from an Adirondack Camp and the streets of Manhattan. Art as a metaphor for wealth, power and privilege plays an important role in the plot and the author's diligent research makes this an engaging element of the story. Small details like lingering scents and the movement of air make for not only interesting clues along the way but also interesting character development devices that connect you the protagonists.The ending is particularly strong and will leave you wanting more of Buddy, Ben and Mei. It's easy to envision the building blocks for a successful new series with these characters.A great read for a long flight or sitting on the beach, pure brain candy, enjoy!

I liked the characters even the bad guy. They all had personality and color. The story was also good.What I didn't like was the tedious descriptions of what people wore, the area, where they lived. It just went on and on, so much so that I skipped pages and pages just to keep the story going.Then death nil, no ending. Don't bother with this one if like things to be wrapped up at the end.

Ten-year-old Ben Brook is the only survivor after his parents and sister are brutally murdered. It looks like the killer might target other members of the wealthy Brook family clan so detective Buddy Lock is tasked with solving the killings and protecting Ben. Buddy soon discovers the Brook family might have wealth and privilege but they also are harboring dark secrets.The story got off to a good start with a poor boy narrowly escaping death but unfortunately it was all downhill from there. There were just too many times where it felt unrealistic and ridiculous. The writing particularly when describing noises or during what are supposed to be tense action scenes was weak. (Chapter 10's last paragraph is an example of the type of scene you would expect in a terrible horror movie.) The one positive thing I can say about this book is there was one twist I didn't see coming but even that was so far-fetched. I enjoy most books I read, but I just did not connect with this book at all.I won a free ebook in a giveaway but was under no obligation to post a review. All views expressed are my honest opinions.

This was an interesting and exciting read. I really liked the background on the pillagng of Jews by the Hitler Germans. We must never forget those events. The way it tied into this story was very informative. I wasn't completely satisfied with the end but know it will be "fleshed" out n the next book by Tucker with Buddy. I loved the bravery and intelligence of Ben as our 10-year old granddaughter exhibits the same sort of smarts paired with common sense. Looking forward to the next installment this Fall!

I usually have an inkling by 3/4 through a book as to the identity of the “bad guy,” but this fast-paced serial-killer mystery had me baffled until the last few chapters.Someone has targeted members of the powerful Brooks families who have wealth, status, fabulous homes with good security, and art worth millions of dollars. It’s not only a question of who the murderer is but why this extended family is being targeted. NYPD homicide detective Buddy Lock must find the killer, who is determined to wipe out the entire extended Brooks family, including a ten year-old boy who barely managed to survive the initial slaughter of his nuclear family. If you enjoy reading mystery thrillers, I highly recommend this book.

I won a e-book version of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. On New Year's Eve members of the Brooks family are at their vacation home. One of the Brooks brothers, his wife, and daughter are murdered. The only survivor is their ten year old son. The murderer then targets the ten year old survivor, the remaining Brooks brothers and their families. Secrets come out about the family and artwork stolen during World War II. Was surprised when I found out the identity of the murderer. Very fast paced and well written story. I look forward to reading many more books by this author!

Riveting, I could not put this book down. It moved at a good pace from one atrocity to another in this thriller. The sins of the fathers who became wealthy by stealing and killing the Jews will come back to enact vengeance upon future generations. He kills with a hatchet then leaves his victims chopped in mutilated lumps and you'll never know who the killer is until the very end. Looking forward to what this author has to offer in the future.

I recently downsized and gave a reproduction of a Shaker box to a friend. The brochure was still inside of it from 20 years ago when I bought it. I read the brief background of the Shakers it included and became fascinated by the Shaker history and life style. Is book is a great overview of their beginnings and voyage to America to live out their beliefs.

The Shaker Story by Flo Morse may not be a large book, but it provides a wealth of information about this little known and oft misunderstood religious group. Some people confuse them with Quakers. Others think they were simply manufacturers of furniture. Morse sets out to fill in the gaps.The Shakers were founded in 1772 and thrived into the 1800's. They believed that you didn't have to die to enter heaven. Rather, heaven could be found right here on earth if you lived a simple and virtuous life. Shakers were required to live in villages, where they were totally self-sufficient. Couples had to disavow marriage vows, and men, women and children lived apart from each other. They did interact during worship where they sang and danced (or "shaked"). They produced seeds, herbs, hats, cloth, thread, brooms and furniture, and sold these items all over the country. The Shakers were also prolific songwriters, and they composed over 30,000 hymns and songs. Music was an important component of their worship. Only one of their songs, A Simple Gift, has gone mainstream. Aaron Copland included it as the main melody in his well-known classic, Appalachian Spring.You might wonder what would entice adults to live a celibate life. But this was often more appealing to women-rather than marrying an abusive or undependable husband. Women had an equal say in village life, and some villages even welcomed blacks as equals. Many unwanted children were dropped off at Shaker Villages, where they were raised to adulthood.The Shakers started to fade after the Civil War for a variety of reasons. First, factories started mass-producing the same products the Shakers made by hand, but for a fraction of the cost. Since members didn't procreate, new generations were not born to replace older generations as they died off. And public orphanages meant less unwanted children coming to Shaker Villages. One by one, the villages were dissolved and closed. Several have become National Historic Sites, and it is fascinating to see how Shakers lived, worked and worshipped. Still, there are a handful of Shakers in the United States (less than a dozen at last count), although the Shaker glory days appear to be over.So, if you can't visit a Shaker Village (such as Pleasant Valley Shaker Village in Kentucky), pick up Morse's book. She provides a good look at this fascinating group.

Tells the story of a faith that originated in Europe and was brought to the United States in the 1770's by nine people. Their faith spread out mostly in the Eastern United States with several communities. They did not believe in marriage and took in orphans to raise. B/W drawings appear of their worship and their beliefs are explained.With the Industrial Revolution their ranks shrink to just a few that are left. Includes a map of where their settlements were located and the years they were active. Insightful.

A great read! I got this book at the Enfield Shaker Museum in Entfield, N.H. It was such a nice read! If you want to learn more about the Shakers without having to read hundreds of pages, this is the book you're looking for!

The book started well, and there were good passages in between, but I got the feeling I was hearing what we call in the South "twice told tales" - more of a tall tale than actual facts. The amounts of cash made, and some of the methods described, seemed more for an interesting story than actual reality. I don't regret reading the book, or the Kindle price, but I would not recommend it. NOTE: In the Kindle edition the pictures do not match to the captions.

The book is well written so it is a good page turner. Did I say that 100 pages could have been cut? It is really just a series of incidents.It is a morality tale however. Don't get busted for drugs in a Third World country. The dealer (hero?) does and what ensues is kinda crazy. I don't doubt that some of it is fiction but in all a fast paced read. There is way too much recreated dialogue however and the ghost writer puts a clean veneer on even the most insidious things. But still a good read. I hope the dealer has kept his nose clean. He sounds in the book like a decent enough fellow but his previous life as a dealer warranted a much longer sentence than he in fact ever served. I doubt the book will do much for Bolivia's tourist industry but considering the events that transpire that is just plain warranted.Books like this require you to suspend critical thinking and moral but...a good read nonetheless.

.Interesting book! It truly makes me think that I am quite happy traveling within the borders of the United States and Canada. This book.had my complete attention from the very start I am not completely convinced that some things the author writes about actually happened.However having never spenttime in a Bolivian prison as an inmate or a tourist I will have to take his word for it and owe to creative license. I would definitely recommend this book to others. It was very entertaining. It was also completely different subject matter from what I normally read. I did enjoy it.

If there was some value in this book, I didn't find it in the 30% of it that I read. Once you get the concept of the prison, just the same thing over and over again.

Two thumbs up for this amazing book. This story was absolutely riveting, I honestly couldn't put this book down. Very well written and one of my favorites. Thanks to Rusty Young for bringing Thomas McFadden's harrowing experience to life so vividly. I've already passed this book off to my friend who thought I was telling her about a Novel I read as I recounted the "amazing book I just read." When I insisted (again) that it was a true-story she demanded the book. I'm sure she will also love this book as much as I have. A+! 10-Gold Stars!! Job well done!!! BRAVO!!!!

A true story that will have you turning the pages. An interesting read, leaves you with questions. I recommend reading.

A bizarre and intriguing tale. I barely could set my Kindle down. Thomas and his encounter the San Pedro prison makes for a captivating story.
