This book is a nice read that is easy to finish. Micheal Moran will travel for you to take you places where you'll most likely never go yourself.

OBSERVATIONS:- Covers the brief German colonialist period- Investigates issues of poverty, cultural dislocation and crime (the "raskols")- Not so much on cannibalism per se, but it is disconcerting to read how relatively frequently uppity missionaries were eaten!- The Manus Island dances give new meaning to the term "Members Only"PROS- Well-researched- Multiple sets of great photos- Stories of adventurous missionaries and misfits such as Count D'Albertis, the Cambridge Seven, Bronislaw Malinowski, Baron Miklouho-Maclay and of course Errol Flynn- Good exploration of cultural concepts and artifacts such as malagan masks, tubuans, dukduks etc.- Best book chapter is the Essay on Kwato Island - very poignant, poetic and melancholyCONThe balance of memoir, travelogue, history and essay is good but not as good as other travel writers such as Robert D. Kaplan or Bruce Chatwin. Moran has all the right ingredients, but the proportions need tweaking.Great line: "once the tropics infects your blood, it enslaves you like a terminal illness"

This was a satisfying, informative, entertaining and thought provoking read. Having lived in New Zealand and Australia most of my adult life, I have never paddled up to the Coral Sea. I have been to other parts of Polynesia and Melanesia but what is described in this book is a series of cultures different from what I have encountered. Part history, biography and travel story it works on all those levels. It is clear on the legacy of European colonisation and the missionairies role in subverting existing beliefs and traditional tribal structures. Unsuprising many Europeans came to a bad end without quite realising why. The dangerous currents then are still in force today and Mr Moran encounters some of them in his travels. Yet what emerges is the richness of differences, even in short distances-these can often be baffling when on the surface there may be a sameness about the environment, the people and what they appera to do and beleive in. It is a book I shall long treasure.

Australian travel writer Michael Moran boned up, so to speak, before his leisurely sweep through the cannibal islands. The cannibals are mostly Christians now, of somewhat puritanical bent, but not so strait-laced that they do not tease tourists about who's for dinner.Nevertheless, this is more ambitious than the usual drool of travelogues, and consequently somewhat disappointing in that it shoots high but hits low too often.Moran has lived in Poland and knows Polish and German, useful because he wants to explore the present in the context of the recent past -- the colonial era of Germany, Russia, Japan and Australia. Polish comes in because Poles did, especially the anthropologists Bronislaw Malinowski and the Russian Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay, who introduced the concept of living at length among one's subjects. Moran has unlimited admiration for him.For the missionaries, his feelings are mixed, as they should be.Having packed his boxes of 19th century books, Moran then visits Port Moresby, in 2000 and still one of most dangerous places. Moran explains he will not visit the Highlands, even more dangerous, and he is glad to get out of Moresby for the eastern or island provinces: Massim, New Ireland, New Britain, Buka, (very briefly) Bougainville, the Trobriands. It was hot.Moran tries, not too successfully, to keep three balls in the air: flashbacks to the early years of white contact, meetings with Melanesians, meetings with `expatriates.'The theme of the book becomes, "the beautiful children of Melanesia." These are contrasted with the fierce (but usually amiable once introduced) older men and the sullen, resentful young ones. These, in turn, are contrasted with expats, who are either like Moran or, more often, western rejects, drunks, liars, con artists. It's all a little too pat and somewhat skimpy on the Melanesians. The attempt to analyze Papua New Guinea politics is interesting and may even, who knows?, be fairly accurate. That trying to impose parliamentary democracy on the sons of headhunters, people so poor that even the chiefs buy cigarettes one at a time, was a mistake seems obvious. But parliamentary democracy has failed in places with much stronger claims to be part of the modern world than Melanesia.Melanesia is a violent place these days. But it always was. Whether it is more violent is a question Moran does not ask."Beyond the Coral Sea" is beautifully written; no other contemporary travel writer I know is in the same league. (I would have to go back more than half a century to Vincent Cronin's "The Golden Honeycomb" to find its equal.)

An informative and at times entertaining read about Papua New Guinea and it's surrounding islands. The author interweaves his story of travel with the history of various explorers, missionaries, and local personages. He describes the various impacts modernization has had on the islands and discusses the effects missionaries, colonization, and the world wars have wrought. The book provides good insight to places rarely written about and the author colorfully describes various festivals, arts, and customs. I enjoyed the book although at times it slowed and a sense of sanctimony occasionally pervades the work. The book whetted my appetite to learn more about the region's history and art and an extensive bibliography is provided.

As a traveller who has spent a total of about 18 months in and around the island regions of Papua New Guinea, I found this book to be just what I look for before and during a trip to any area. Moran's trip illustrated exactly what a traveller will experience while in the country and also gives the historical background so that time is not wasted trying to discover how a culture or area has come to be what it is.While looking over the harbor of Rabaul and seeing the Duke of York Islands and the southern end of New Ireland, I felt as though I could feel the history taking place. Even Moran's encounters with modern day expatriots in airports and towns ring so true to my experiences that I felt he was writing about my trip without me knowing it.It is my goal to gain this insight for every country I visit but it is hardly realized. This book fulfilled that goal for Papua New Guinea and raised the bar for my travel reading in the future.

One of the best magicians of our time. Its too bad he works mostly in the UK. If you ever listen to him speak or watch one of his shows you will realize he is a very intelligent person. I bought this book simply because I was intrigued by him and his style of magic. The book is such a fun and easy read. He writes the way he speaks which makes it that much more entertaining. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of becoming an entertainer in this industry.

I am a huge Derren Brown fan and love his TV shows and his performances that I have been able to watch. This is a book that kind of condenses a lot of methods of psychology and mentalism. The techniques are given pretty straight forward, but I think they are done well enough to get a good grasp on the idea. Plus it is always fun reading Derren Brown. He has a very playful and mischevious way of writing that I think many will find enjoyable.

As a result of certain conditions, I have a very poor memory, I got this and several other books in hopes that one of them might have some bit of help or some suggestions inside that I might be able to use. Of the 5 books I purchased for this task, this one was worth the price of it and of the other 4 books combined just because of the section on memory alone. I have seen a half dozen specialists and NONE of them ever mentioned any of those suggestions as a means of helping me recall major things let along minor ones, and as mentioned in the book some of the methods have been around for about 2 THOUSAND years, and they REALLY WORK! I am amazed at the effectiveness and a bit pissed that none of the professionals that wasted my time and money had any clue! The memory section is kind of odd actually, just reading the section on memory will IMPROVE your memory, at least for a bit, and actively using the techniques makes life much more easy to manage. I personally think that this stuff should be taught as a mandatory class in the educational system. So yes, for me 5 stars easily.

If you like to know more about how your mind works and how to benefit from it, read this book. Derren Brown is a famous illusionist/mind reader/hypnotist and knows what he's talking about. There are some great stories in this book filled with a good amount of humor. Also, there are some mind tricks you can pick up yourself from this book, I highly recommend them. Don't buy this book if you want a step by step instruction manual on how to hypnotize your wife or husband, because that's not the point of this book. Do buy it to expand your knowledge of how the mind works and gain some valuable information to use in your day-to-day life. And also, Google his name, watch some of his incredible videos, you'll love it!

I'm a huge fan of Derren Brown's work that reading so much about his thoughts and views on religion and humanity - although seemingly out of place in a book that purports to tell us how he does what he does - was fascinating for me, and changed a few long-held opinions of mine. It does ultimately relate to getting into how he thinks, and trying to understand why people hold superstitious and evangelical beliefs is a way to show how easily people can be manipulated which is a major trick of the mind. The actual reveals on card tricks, memory tricks and hypnosis are interesting, but not as thorough as I had hoped. The real trick to these things is hard work and practice and unfortunately no book can give you an easy way to learn them. In the end the memory tricks felt most useful to me, and could have quite astounding effects if one practices. This book felt like an overview for the interested, and that makes sense as Derren Brown is still practicing his craft and he can't give all his secrets away. This was an enormously entertaining read though because of Derren's writing style, and I would recommend everyone to check out his work on youtube and then buy all of his DVDs. It is unfortunate he is not more well known in the States.

I should do a video review and may, a bit later, but for now wanted say this book was amazing. Epically informative (and FUNNY! -- db's british humor is brilliantly funny! seriously!) I loved the loci palace memory methods. He provides three excellent memory mnemonic mind tools "peg, loci, and link" all work fantastically. Have read many books on memory methods and many of the ones in other books are pony and trivial and ineffective. All three of darrrens' mnemonic devices are extremely effective and powerful. They're the only three that work. If you add any more than tthe link, peg, and loci you'll just be repeating variations of one of those three. So even three mbnemonic methods may be unnecessary, but that part WORKS.His discussin of detecting deceit was fantastic and revealing . I loved how he showed ways to to detect deceit from Two angles: Look for signs of truth-telling, look for signs of deceit! He reveals both of those classifications of signs.I loved his intellectual slaughtering of alternative medicine, spiritualism, psychic BS, and religion and have listened to the full Dawkins God delusion audio and plan to delve into that liberating field by scrutinizing and reading more of dawkins and Hitchens.I learned and practiced the two tricks he taught in the book (which really do work, althoguht they're presented as something somewhat metaphorical. I performed the coin one in the squalor of los angeles, but in a pretty cool place at the house of blues, and was met by a gleeful audidence chick.) One thing I LOVED is his humorous and insulting phrases he calls participants "dunderheads" or merry-Andrew or mooncalf. LOL hysterical righteously.what else His discussion of hypnosis was more biographical. Didn't learn much anything new there, but worthwhile to learn about the greatest showmanship hypnotist EVER's bio of hypnotism. Some of the stories, namely the hypnotism as self-defence were extremely amusing.Part5 he goes into ALL of these tells. An enormous array of tells. how voice tone, hand gestures, even EYE flickerings, and micro-face movements all give away lies (or truth if said aberrations are absent). THAT was truly fascinating. he lists 14 signs of truthfulness in speech, voice, body. after this huge assault of give-aways to lying, and patterns that liars use and how their lies are revealed in changes in their wording, their voice tone, everything. That was IMMENSELY cool.by far the coolest part of the book was the short miniscule sub-chapter on "Muscle-Reading". I consider that derren's greatest trick. And unfortunately there was only a short bit on it.Most uplifting was his outright direct cool scientific dissection of the pendulum and ouija board fraudulence and how that works simply through ideomotor effect. This book is something that i can trust. when there's SOOO much fallacious crap (spiritualism, religion, utterly atrotious mysticism crap that's actually published?! How can that stuff get publihed! Dispecable). out there. This is a book is comforting in that it attacks that. So basically this is one of the few books (along with dawkins and science textbooks) that I can actually trust! lol.Fantastic book. And my review is most certainly highly skewed because of my enormous reverence for DB. Fantastic character, easily hands down the most shocking nad impressive stage performances ever (that likely encompasses all genres. Rock concerts are likely sometimes more "energizing" but certainly not more impressive in a way than DB. let's just say they're on par with entertaining) but he does it one-man show, so even more awe-inspiring. Music is still cool. This is quite rambling. but the bottom-line: fantastic book, informative, GREAT anecdotes for detecting liars in body and voice, debunking fallacies of psychics and mediums crap, being extremely humorous and funny, being british (i like and trust british authors MUCh more and by far, the bulk of the authors I've read have been british from Roald Dahl as a kid to Brown, hitchens, and Dawkins now and Douglas adams too of course), entertaining and massively rich with techniques and tricks to expand your mind, slaughter bad thinking, and learn how some part of one of the greatest magician's EVER works! This is VERY good book. It's informative. I will read it again to master the mnemonic techniques, the deceit-detection, touch up on teh card and coin trick, and read up on again and reabsorb the whole Part5:Unconscious communication bit likely. But I read the book very thoroughl, found it informative because of the above mentioned, humorous and incredibly amusing.A joy to read of the candid inside world to this truly World Class International hypnotist and magician. The BEST part of this! is the striking irony that DB simultaneously aims to mystify and awe with his magic as he does simultaneously aim to debunk all fake psychics and BS spiritualitists. The last part on pseudo-science and bad thinking was great, but I'll leave that up to Dawkins and Hitchens. Derren offered obviously a less intellectual, more entertaining, sexier, more performance-based discussion of the kind of dawkins-hitchens anti-religion discussions. That WHOLE anti-pseudo-science anti-religion, atheism thing is very much my bag. Tricks of the mind is an integral text to that "atheist bag" and found this book extremely valuable.

From the Back Cover

The Foundations of Theology in Everyday LanguageDallas Seminary professors Nathan Holsteen and Michael Svigel are passionate about the church, spiritual growth, and the end times, all key doctrines of Christianity. They want readers to know why they're important and why they matter. Holsteen and Svigel explore these important topics in a concise and highly readable style that makes sense--whether you're a student of the Bible, a pastor, or someone who simply wants to know God better. For each topic you'll find· An introduction, overview, and review of the key points· Several applicable Bible texts, including verses to memorize· A quick-paced history of the doctrine· Distortions to be aware of and avoid· Reading lists for further study· A glossary of theological terms"There has never been a more urgent need, because of the times in which we live, to have a biblically based statement of Christian theology. Holsteen and Svigel are both qualified to write such an exploration since their lives have been shaped by biblical teaching, and it is this teaching that prompts others to the hope only God through His Word can provide."--Mark L. Bailey, President, Dallas Theological Seminary "Exploring Christian Theology is a wonderful doctrinal primer that teaches theology in a way that will engage you and cause you to reflect. . . . A great way to get acquainted with key biblical theological themes."--Darrell Bock, senior research professor, Dallas Theological Seminary"The church is always in need of mature, faithful, biblical theology. And that's exactly what you should expect to find in this volume. This new book is a very important consideration of the church, the Christian life, and the end times. And Christians in all walks of life will find this book to be particularly helpful." --Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr., President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"The Exploring Christian Theology series provides a wonderfully helpful tour of basic Christian beliefs. Nathan Holsteen and Michael Svigel have put together a unique way of teaching theology that is thoroughly biblical but also highly engaging. A good resource for pursuing Christian discipleship."--Michael F. Bird, Lecturer in Theology at Ridley Melbourne Mission and Ministry College"Most theological texts seem to use doctrine as a sleep aid. Dull and dry, these books hide the truth behind the reader's yawn. How refreshing to read Exploring Christian Theology! With an appropriate balance of readability, clarity, and humor, Drs. Holsteen and Svigel have made the key doctrines of our Christian faith accessible--without compromising orthodoxy. Truth should never leave us yawning. This book makes me want more."--Dr. Wayne Stiles, Executive Vice President, Insight for Living

I have really enjoyed all 3 of the volumes in this set. They are really well-written, explaining theology and Christian background. I would highly recommend these to anyone interested in theology and the Church.

Absolutely easy to read and understand.T. Allen

Crisp, new pages. Got more than I was expecting!

"For some people, the word doctrine summons yawns of tedium, shudders of trepidation, or frowns of suspicion. Dogmatic preachers exasperate them, feuding denominations weary them, and droning scholars bore them. When people hear theology, the condition sometimes worsens. They picture massive tomes packed with technical discussions, less-than, crucial data, and incomprehensible footnotes - unusable information to distract them from God rather than drawing them nearer. Most people seeking to grow in their faith want practical principles, not theoretical concepts. They want to know God, not just know about Him.Yet the fact is that we can't experience real spiritual growth without solid spiritual truth. We can't know the true God without knowing God truly." (9)Studying theology can be a real source of joy and spiritual growth. Yet for many, particularly in America today, studying theology is mundane and not worth an investment. "Just give me that good old time religion." As the above quote suggests, the general editors of the series and the author of the book Exploring Christian Theology: The Church, Spiritual Growth, and the End Times (Bethany, 2014) seek to pen a book that provides a thorough survey of theological doctrines complete with biblical exegesis, historical developments, and practical application. The Exploring Christian Theology is a series published by Bethany House that seeks to introduce not just the nuts and bolts of theology, but also its importance. As a pastor I could not be more thrilled to have the opportunity to review one of its volumes. In this volume, Drs. Nathan Holsteen and Michael Svigel tackle the doctrines of ecclesiology and sanctification (Dr. Holsteen) and Eschatology (Dr. Svigel). Both follow the same pattern: A survey of the doctrine, followed by biblical exegesis, a historic considerations, a summary of the doctrine, and dangers to avoid, and finally some practical applications. The authors and editors make clear this is a book and a series that is concerned with providing a general overview of Christian theology located within orthodox evangelicalism, not with defending certain tertiary convictions. For example, the authors defending the bodily return of Jesus and a physical resurrection of believers without promoting premillenialism over amillenialism or postmillenialism. The authors provide a helpful survey of these eschatologies but do not prefer one over the other. Thus those looking for an introduction to Reformed, Arminian, or dispensational theology will be disappointed. However, that does not mean the authors do not include these theologies throughout the book.Overall, this is a straight forward theological textbook. Its audience is clear and the authors/editors accomplish presenting sound theology that is relevant. One thing I found interesting thing about the book regards the first section. There Dr. Holsteen discusses both ecclesiology and sanctification. This, to me, was perhaps the most insightful part of the book. Dr. Holsteen suggests that in many ways we cannot separate those two. One danger common in American Christianity is the belief that spiritual growth is a personal matter. By grouping these two together, the authors show how biblically this is simply inaccurate. Finally, this book is a great tool for pastors who have an obligation to preach doctrinally. Simply feeding one's flock with the saturated Christianity full with bumper sticker slogans damages the sheep. We need more sound theology and biblical exegesis. Yet such preaching need not be impractical. The authors have put together a volume discussing the weighty issues of ecclesiology, sanctification, and eschatology all while showing why they matter and how to apply it to the lives of our flock.I look forward to seeing what the other volumes have to offer.I received this book free of charge from Bethany House for the purpose of this review.

This is not a typical theology book: it is written for a popular audience in a fun and accessible style while also presenting major theological issues within their historical contexts. It has two sections: the first addressing ecclesiology (the study of the church), and the second featuring eschatology (the study of the end times). The title "Christian Theology" may connote a larger range of theologies, so I want to emphasize that ecclesiology and eschatology are the primary focuses; other doctrinal theologies (say, the discussion of the Trinity, or of the work of the Holy Spirit, and so forth) are not discussed in depth as they are beyond the intended scope. Also, the application of the theologies at hand are highlighted more so than the theologies themselves, which is what makes this text unique and special. The first section I particularly enjoyed. It is concise, engaging, and draws examples from pop culture in order to bring application and relevance to each subject. The examples are appropriate for the intended audience (lay-persons who want to know a bit of theology), and I think the authors have done a great job of sharing an unbiased perspective and encouraging involvement and appreciation within and for the church body. The section on the end times could have provided a more thorough overview of the major positions, and also could have discussed the implications of each eschatological position. I did not enjoy this section as much, although the writing is still very accessible, and the overall message is positive (though a bit biased toward Dispensational Premillennialism). I appreciate the authors' focus on the big picture rather than on the details. The historical chapter within this section is also very good.Overall, this is a great book for non-scholars who want to get a taste for theology, or could be read for encouragement or general spiritual growth.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House.

Exploring Christian Theology is hard book to describe. Because actually it's not just one book, it's a series of books. But I'm writing a review about only one of the books because that's all I've read. Except that the one book is actually two books, with two separate authors, in one volume. But it covers three topics, not two. The first half is about church (ecclesiology) and spiritual growth (sanctification), and the second half is about end times (escatology). Apparently there will be other books in the series on other areas of Christian theology. It's not aimed at pastors. Pastors need information with more depth and thoroughness. It's also not aimed at baby Christians. Beginners don't need to know this much information. So it's aimed at people in the middle, perhaps Sunday school teachers who want to brush up on a certain topic without having to purchase a full library. For what it intends this book does well. For each area of theology, the book has a series of short, informative sections. A quick survey. Important Bible passages on the subject. The non-negotiable pillars of the topic. A detailed bibliography in case you want to dig in on a particular aspect of the doctrine in study. Probably the most interesting part to me was a selection of quotes from famous writers throughout church history. When it came to the doctrines of the church and sanctification, there was frightening disagreement throughout church history. But on the subject of the return of Christ, there has been reassuring continuity.I received this book from the publisher for free in exchange for an unbiased review.
