Review

“Extraordinary. . . . I Am A Filipino is not only a guide on how to cook like a Filipino; it is also a guide through the Philippines, its history, and its culture.”—Saveur “An exuberant gastronomic manifesto. . . . A brilliant cookbook that doubles as an important work of cultural scholarship.” —The New Yorker, The Best Food Books of 2018 “A deeply researched and important work.”—Chicago Tribune, Our 10 favorite cookbooks of 2018 “I cracked open this book knowing very little about Filipino food, and now it’s all I can think about. That’s the power of a good cookbook: It can take a cuisine that’s unfamiliar and—through storytelling, technical education, gorgeous photography and killer recipes—transform it into a passion.—Houston Chronicle, The Best Cookbooks of 2018 “Recipes run the gamut from comforting. . . to piquant . . . [to] haunting.”—The New York Times, Best Cookbooks of Fall 2018“Part cookbook, part manifesto, Nicole Ponseca wants to change the conversation around Filipino food. For Filipino readers, the book is a statement of pride in Filipino identity and culinary heritage and for those still learning about the cuisine, the book is an excellent course in the flavors that ground it and how to bring them into your home. For the latter group, don’t skip the book’s Filipino 101, which grounds cooks in the essential methods and ingredients of this complex and intensely flavorful cuisine.”—Food & Wine, The Best Cookbooks Coming Out This Fall “A great guide to both the subtleties and history of the food, and the dishes themselves. From pancit and adobo to chorizo burgers and jackfruit ice cream, this book demonstrates the delicious mash-up of recipes that define the vibrant cuisine.”—Los Angeles Times“This cookbook offers modern Filipino recipes that capture the bright, tangy, savory, and spice essence of the country's food, which reflects an array of influences from Chinese, to Middle Eastern, to Spanish, Mexican, and even American. Learn to make fried street snacks like ukoy, tender adobos, and bright seafood.”—Epicurious“Vividly written and photographed, I Am A Filipino and This Is How We Cook is more than a cookbook. It’s a passageway into a misunderstood cuisine as complex as its country’s turbulent history, whose time in the spotlight has finally come.”—Atlanta Journal-Constitution

#375 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A thoughtful overview of the many cultures throughout the Philippines, seen thru a culinary lens. It’s also a very solid compilation of dishes that are truly everyday fare, not just party dishes. I gave this to a relative who is married to a non-Filipino, and also requested it for my birthday, so that non-Filipino family members might get a glimpse of the many influences that permeate Filipino society and cuisine, and how they have been transformed into something unique.Observations:- I wish the beautiful photos had more captions. I recognize many of the scenes and items, but non-Filipinos may not, and would thus miss out on some of the rich context. I’d also love to know who these anonymous cooks or diners are! (Like the lovely lady on p.10, or the hardworking IUD vendor on p.244.) And down the road some of the photos might well become a historical record, as places change and grow.- I wish someone truly bilingual (in Tagalog and English; possibly even fluent in other Philippine languages) would edit the non-English terms. E.g. The use of the modifier -ng is inconsistent ("afritada manok" - which sounds like barok Tagalog - followed by "rellenong manok"), and not clearly understood (ref. p. 52: -ng does not always mean “of”, for example, "adobong puti" does not mean the adobo is MADE OF white. Rather, -ng here is an adjectival linker, describing the dish as a white adobo.)- Other notes: clay pot = palayOk, not palayAk. The accent in “pancit”/pansit is on the last syllable, not on the first. Similarly with “maalat” (mah-AH-laht). Minor quibbles in what is an ambitious and well-executed volume, but it disrupts the experience for someone who actually speaks the language. Editing for fluency would make this an even more impressive book.- I was a little surprised by the title of one of the recipes - it’s not every day one comes across a dish that is called the C-word! It’s rather vulgar and I wouldn’t want to read this aloud to my mother. ;)- I wanted even more cultural exploration - for instance, “atsara” is clearly related to Hindi achar/aachar.- Would love to see a follow-up to this, featuring menus grouped by occasion (breakfast, lunch; holiday dishes) to provide even more of a sense of what dishes are normally served together (e.g. KBL and laswa, with a side dish of tomatoes and pounded ginger; or, rellenong manok, ham, beef tongue, and fruit salad for a Christmas meal).Really a wonderful in-depth look at an archipelago with a dense history. Bravo Nicole Ponseca and Miguel Trinidad!

I am Filipino. My family is Filipino. I know our food by my family’s recipes. I know the recipes from my family’s stories. This cookbook combines the best of both! There are family favorite recipes as well as new ones from other areas of the Philippines I wasn’t aware of before. It is also, a self described manifesto of what it is to be Filipino. It is a history book. It is a cookbook. It is a collection of recipes and stories. It was an absolute joy to read this with my family and have their stories supplement the recipes and photos.Five stars will absolutely recommend to anyone looking to explore Filipino food culture!

I loved that so much research was done on the history of how food began and evolved to be our own. Such a good learning material! One thing that really disappointed me though was the first recipe in the book, kare-kare... an iconic Filipino trademark, had Cabernet Sauvignon?!? I totally understand that this may be a version that their family made but for a book introducing typical/ traditional Filipino food, the first recipe should at least be typical. Or at least a small note indicating that the Cabernet was your twist on the recipe. Having eaten Kare all my life and I have even asked my parents and grandparents if there was ever Red wine in any of their Kare or have heard of it, their reaction was just confused facial reactions of Why? Wine was not a traditional ingredient in typical Filipino cuisine because most people didn’t have access to Cabernet Sauvignon.Overall, the book is beautiful, loved the pictures and the history behind the recipes. I just wish that when a recipe is modernized, it should be noted, so readers who are new to this cuisine will know that this may not be what the typical dish would look and taste like.

This is more than a book of recipes; it offers insight into the cultural aspect of Filipino cooking and life. Especially good if you have ever lived in the Philippines.

After college, I backpacked through the Philippines and fell in love with the cuisine. Sisig, tapsllong, ensaymadas...easy to follow recipes. I plan on cooking my favorite dishes for friends. My guess is that they too will buy this book.

This is a wonderful book to learn more about my heritage. Growing up in the States, I really didn't have alot of exposure to Filipino food with the exception of the popular dishes. I'm excited to try the recipes.

I purchased this cookbook for a good friend who is Filipino, already has made a few authentic recipes passed down from her family but she loved the history behind some of these individual dishes. She loved it!

Purchased for a gift, and it has great familiar recipes

I didn't discover this book until the last leg of my 3rd pregnancy- but it was still worth every penny! I've read other preg food books (especially with the 1st kid when everyone gifts them to you), and I found them all to be largely the same and unimpressive. THIS book, however, is a game changer. Here's how:1. Science - The author has done more nutrition research than many doctors I know. She doesn't just make recommendations, she explains WHY she is making them based on how all the macro and micronutrients function inside your body. She cites studies AND explains those studies (eg. clinical vs epidemiological, sample size, other considerations, etc.)2. Detail - Everything is here. Meal suggestions, recipes, vitamin/supplement explanations, conversation about controversial foods like sushi, lunchmeat, coffee, wine, etc., historical and international anecdotes, common complaints, exercise, mental health, nursing, and recovery. Etc. Etc.3. Empathy - Yes, I nerded out about all the science^, but just as important is the author's incredible understanding of how stressful, difficult, and confusing pregnancy and postpartum can be. She's been there, and she tells you about her experience, too. She knows that no one is perfect and that we can't always do things optimally all the time. She always presents the information with a practical approach and multiple options. She provides the base for you to use and tailor however you need.Additionally, you can look up the author online- she has a million helpful (totally free) articles with even more information. Plus you can sign up for her newsletter (still more good, free info), and I can personally attest that if you write to her with questions, she writes back and answers them!I wish I had this book from the beginning, and I will (and have been) recommend(ing) this book to every pregnant, nursing, and TTC woman I know! Honestly, I recommend this book even to people who aren't pregnant, just as a great guide for general nutrition. There is a ridiculous shortage of up-to-date, evidence-based nutrition information IN GENERAL, let alone relating to pregnancy. Having these resources is truly invaluable!

I was honored to be an early reviewer of this book and even though prenatal nutrition is my specialty as a nutritionist focused on women's health, I learned a TON while reading it. It's somehow both a practical guide that anyone could use and also, basically, a textbook, filled with more than 900 citaions. To say that it's evidence-based would be the understatement of the century. This book will get you REALLY questioning where we are today in terms of diet and lifestyle recommendations pre-conception and during pregnancy...and both excited and empowered to take control of you and your baby's health. All of my pregnant clients will be getting a copy of this book! And if you are a health practitioner, you need to read this book because the prenatal nutrition guidelines that are circulating are basically a regurgitation of non-evidenced based "no to do or eat" lists, and completely void of some critical information that all women have the right to know.

If you're thinking about getting pregnant, already are pregnant, or even just want to learn more about how to eat quality, whole foods, GET THIS BOOK! Just do it, you won't regret it!! This book is backed by science and research, and has all the information you need to know to help you grow a healthy baby. I wish that this book had come out before I had my first two children. There is a severe lack of prenatal information given to pregnant women and this book is the answer we have all been looking for. If all your OB has told you is to take a prenatal vitamin, stay away from undercooked eggs and meat, avoid sushi....etc....then you DEFINITELY need this book. It addresses a lot of the "traditional" prenatal advice but also gives evidence-based information to tell you what foods you should REALLY be eating and avoiding. I am sure that if every single pregnant woman were to read this book while pregnant, this could very well prevent a lot of childhood physical and behavioral problems as well as help most mothers have a smooth pregnancy with a full recovery. This book also has good information for EVERYONE! While reading it, I couldn't help but read practically every other paragraph out loud to my husband (much to his annoyance haha). But it has information that is beneficial to everyone. For example, this book discusses the negative side effects of using and heating up plasticware for food because of the potential of chemicals that are leached into the food, which can impact our hormones and affect numerous processes within our body. After reading this part to my husband, he finally took me seriously and switched to using glass containers to store and heat up his food at work. The bottom line- BUY AND READ THIS BOOK! It has information that could be life changing for you, your baby, and even those around you!

I almost didn’t get this book. I’m not pregnant yet and the price was a little deterring. I’m now almost done with the book and am wishing I had this when I was pregnant with my first! I’m also incredibly grateful I’m reading this before getting pregnant and am already starting to implement some of her nutritional advice. Lily does a fantastic job of presenting entirely up to date, evidence based nutritional information that is easy to read. She even recaps at the end of each section which is very helpful. It’s empowering to have all the facts and make enducated decisions for myself and my future baby. I can’t wait to compre this next pregnancy to my first with all the info I got here. Thanks for an amazing resource Lily. Hope this isn’t your last book!

The author has lots of strong biases, so it's hard to know how "science-based" the book is. It is easy to find a journal article to cite to support your bias/opinion. She is very anti-vegetarian and makes misleading statements (e.g., implying there are no plan-based total proteins, which is completely incorrect). Other than for coffee and caffeine, she does not present all the data or the different sides of an argument, making it difficult to make an informed decision.

The Bear Ate Your Sandwich, by Julia Sarcone-Roach

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—"It all started with the bear," begins this story of what happened to a sandwich. Bear wakes up to the delectable aroma of freshly picked berries. He sniffs out a red truck, the back of which is filled with boxes of perfectly harvested berries. After having a berry party, Bear falls asleep. The truck drives him to a new forest—the city. When Bear begins to explore, he sees things in the city framed by his own experiences: a telephone pole becomes a tree, and bricks on the side of a building make great bark for scratching. In a park, he finds a lunchbox with a delicious sandwich, which he eats ravenously. When he climbs a tree, he can see his forest home in the distance and desperately wants to return. Somehow, he finds a boat, which carries him to the familiar sights and sounds of home. "So that's what happened to [the] sandwich." This is a fun story that children will enjoy, though they'll need to suspend logic a bit. The illustrations in this book are terrific: color-drenched and bold slashes that cover the pages. The funny Bear is sympathetic and is only doing what bears do—eating and sleeping. And making us laugh. This book is a fine addition to any collection.—Mary Hazelton, formerly at Warren & Waldoboro Elementary Schools, ME

Wonderful, imaginative children's book with beautifully detailed illustrations. My 3-year-old LOVES this book (although she still believes the bear ate the sandwich), and I don't mind reading it repeatedly. It's sweet, funny, and we like to look for the bear and talk about what he's doing in the scenes on each page. The only small nit I would have is that I usually have to add a little narration to explain that the bear gets on a boat at the end (it's pictured, but she doesn't really understand what's being shown. Otherwise, she still interprets the bear's perception literally (she thinks the tall tree is actually a tall tree, and not the electrical pole it actually is, for example). This is one of our absolute favorites though--great book.

This was one of our selections for the prime subscription box for my toddler.I selectednit based on reviews. My daughter didn’t love it and neither did I.It is basically the story of how a bear came to eat a child’s sandwich. And - spoiler alert - it was really the dog who ate it and was telling a tale. The pictures were fine but nothing about the book was very interesting to either of us reading it!

This is a cute story of a bear that accidentally winds up in a city (that looks suspiciously like New York), does some exploring, finds a sandwich on a park bench, eats it, and eventually winds up back in his forest home. This is a very, very simple story but it is pure delight for a toddler. The full-page illustrations are a joy to see and the simple story line has a touch of adventure.I sent this book as a birthday gift to a 3-year old and he is delighted with it. It has become his favorite book and his mother says that almost every night he climbs on her lap with this book and insists that they both read it. He’s much taken with the beautiful illustrations. The hardcover edition is a large 9”x11” and has a dust jacket which it does not need since the picture on the dust jacket is the same as on the glossy board cover. It’s probably best to take the off the dust jacket and put it away somewhere since it won’t last long in a toddler’s hands.

This is a terrific story to read to kids to get their minds thinking. As a volunteer, I read this story to two first grade classes and a mixed younger primary class this week. Lots of opportunities to ask the kids questions as you read to them. There are no words outside their vocabulary range, There is a big twist in the plot at the very end that is a great mind-bender for them. I can't say enough about this book. SPOILER ALERT: A bear did NOT eat the sandwich!

This book is so cute I could read it a dozen times a day and not tire of it. The pictures are hilarious and a great complement to the narrative. My grandson who is three requests it every time he comes over. I highly recommend this book.

Such a cute story! I had to explain to my 4 year old grandson at the end of the story that the dog was blaming the bear for eating the sandwich because he didn't pick up on that. However, he thought it was funny and we had to read it over and over again.

This book was a gift for my grandson. He enjoyed it tremendously. I think that it gave him a perspective on sharing and being honest with people.

Great book, lots of fun. My nephews absolutely love it. My mom, their grandmother has taken it with her to school and it is a big hit in her Kindergarten classroom. The story is fantastic and the illustrations are colorful and eye-catching. An excellent book, to be sure. I'd love to see it in a "board book" style, just for durability around really young children.
