I am not a forensic artist, and I do not work in law enforcement, but I am a writer with an interest in various forensic science disciplines and the nexus between art & science. In particular, I am always interested in what makes someone "identifiable" -- how you *know* who someone is, how you recognize a person, what it means to identify or recognize someone & all the attendant cognitive issues. If you are at all interested in those kinds of questions, this book will knock your socks off and challenge you in ways you never imagined.It is also an incredible gift to witness Karen T. Taylor's methodical, exacting process step-by-step. Fifteen years ago, when I was writing an essay about a missing person case, I stumbled upon forensic facial reconstruction and thought, "This is what I am doing, too." Just as forensic artists sculpt from the architectural structure and anatomy of a skull, I was "sculpting" essays from the basic architecture of facts gleaned from research to bring this missing person to life. I had to be highly ethical and aware of where science/fact ended and creativity began. So when I found Karen T. Taylor's book, it became a sort of writing process bible for me, a way to imagine the nexus between science and art -- and it continues to apply to my work today, even if I am writing straight-up memoir. While teaching composition, I have even referenced this book to demonstrate to students how a methodical process works and why it unfolds in the order it does.In fact, ever since the first time I cracked open that spine, Karen T. Taylor has been a hero of mine. Not only does she know how to teach, but she is also extremely generous in sharing the secrets she has learned in her many years as a top forensic artist. She genuinely wants others to succeed in the field and help identify victims and criminals. There is absolutely no ego, which if you have spent much time in the arts, is a rare and amazing trait.The book gives you a solid foundation in the history of forensic art, the scientific basis for why forensic artists work as they do, facial anatomy, changes to the face after death, interviewing techniques for composite drawings, practical considerations such as tools and materials, and how to apply all of it to your work. Bonus: Karen T. Taylor happens to be a talented writer, too. The text is easy to read, even for non-forensic professionals, and it is loaded with illustrations.I have even purchased additional copies to give to friends in the visual arts, and they unanimously love it for how it has pushed them to greater understanding of faces. (I wasn't being generous. I simply can't bear to loan out my copy!)Finally, having taken her Forensic Facial Reconstruction-Sculpture course at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State, I can assure you that Karen T. Taylor doesn't do anything halfway. She is not content to stick to techniques simply because she has always done them. She constantly strives to learn more about anatomy, more about tissue depth studies, and more about her art--a quality that shines through in this book as well, as she reveals how she learned from mistakes. During class, she was generous with her time and insight, and she is every bit as amazing as I had imagined, so if you love her book and feel like it has helped you hone your craft, take the workshop, too.

As a full-time instructor at the Art Institute of Phoenix, where I teach life drawing, character design, backgrounds design and similar classes, I often look for texts and information related to the subjects I teach. I picked up Forensic Art and Illustration recently, and have found it to be one of the best text purchases that I've ever made. Karen Taylor has accomplished in a single book what numerous authors have failed to do piecemeal over the past hundred years, and that is to assemble, in a single volume, in a highly readable and information-packed form, the best single description of the nature of forensic art available. Every kudo you read in these reviews is deserved. The book is well layed out, written in understandable English, with important information in bold type, a great device for reviewing salient points when going back to a chapter or two. The visuals are great, and deftly illustrate each point she is making. Her own reputation is of the highest order, and her talent and integrity stand out on every page. Having had the honor of meeting her and taking her forensic classes, I can attest that the book is a superb resource, both for the classes, and as a stand alone volume. You can't miss with this one. I highly recommend it, not just for those who think they will become forensic artists, but for all artists and laymen interested in the human form, anatomy and forensic information in general. The price, while moderately steep by general book standards, is average compared to most college textbook prices, and lower than many. Don't be put off by it. You will get every penny's worth.

Karen T. Taylor is an amazing pioneer in the forensic world, both in composites and sculpting. I bought her book to take with me to her Forensic Facial Sculpting class. I just finished the course and am even more excited to see the items in Karen's book that weren't covered in class. Plus, this is such a great reference tool, with valuable resources, including diagrams, charts, sketching education and so much more. Knowing I can learn from such an acclaimed forensic artist, and then have her book to reference for just about everything! Such a treasure for my job as a forensic artist!!

This book takes the reader on a chronological journey through the development of six important innovations: glass, cold, sound, clean, time, and light. It does a beautiful job of conveying factual information clearly, while also painting a larger picture of how collaboration and determination drive technological advancement. The combination of broad thematic ideas and more challenging sentence structure makes this a perfect text to discuss as a class or in small close reading groups.As another review mentioned, there is one mention of sex in the "Light" chapter, in reference to human nighttime routines. Don't let you put this off from teaching this book or using it in the classroom! Given the fact that it is brief and non-graphic, this reference seems to me (while not ideal given the giggle factor) appropriate for a 5/6th grade classroom, especially given the overall content of the book.

How We Got to Now was originally published for an adult audience. When they were making the television series for PBS they wanted to attract a younger audience (younger than retirement age). What happened was that families were enjoying the series with their grade school students – that is how this book came about.There is a lot of fascinating information in the book showing the history of glass, cold, sound, clean, time, and light. As is usually the case, the author’s world view comes out in his writing. There are multiple references to the age of the earth which support an evolutionary stand point. Some of them really didn’t seem to be necessary – most of the time, the story could have been told without the reference to millions of years – I usually tell me students “a long time ago”. There are also references to things which are not provable – there are no eyewitness reports to what the author presents – for example how glass was first formed is speculation not verifiable fact.There is one reference of even greater concern given the intended audience of the book. During the discussion of light, the author mentions that before artificial light “When darkness fell, they drifted into ‘first sleep’ and woke after four hours or so to snack, relieve themselves, have sex, or chat by the fire.” The comment about having sex could just as well been left out for the intended audience of upper elementary and middle school students. Librarians need to keep these things in mind when determining if this book is appropriate for their audience.The chapter on Glass takes the reader from how glass was possibly formed for the first time, before recorded history, through the development of glass production and uses to the many ways glass is used today in our everyday lives. In the chapter on Cold we are exposed to the first person who attempted to sell ice in the tropics, through the uses of ice as they were developed in the food industry, to the discovery of how to keep homes and buildings cool even in the hottest months. Sound moves from the acoustics in caves on to the use of a cadaver ear for experimentation to the creation of the telephone and radio. Cleanliness isn’t something we necessarily think about all the time, yet in Clean we learn about the lack of cleanliness in the 19th Century. The development of sewage drainage, is followed by the importance of hand washing and then the sneaky way in which chlorinated water was first introduced. Time – it didn’t matter in the beginning what time it was on a clock. As the world changed and became more industrialized, time became more important – time zones were developed. As time became more important, the need for more and more accurate clocks came about. The book ends with a chapter on Light which looks at life before artificial light, the creation of candlelight, the discovery of sperm whales, the use of fossil fuels, and the creation of light bulbs.In each of these chapters we learn about the different players who got us from then to now. In many cases there was more than one person headed to the same goal and one invention depended on the findings of someone else. The book really shows the interconnectedness of science.I want to thank Viking – Penguin Books for the review copy in exchange for my honest review. While this book is designed for upper elementary students, I will be placing it in the secondary section of the school library where I work. I encourage librarians to get a copy and read it for themselves to determine if How We Got To Now by Steven Johnson is appropriate for their audience.

'Book of the Porsche 356' is a new release of the title originally published in 1996. This is not simply a reissue. It is extensively revised and substantially expanded. I am certainly not an authority on the 356. But I have always been a fan and though never having owned this model certainly followed with interest the development and the rise in value they have experienced over the past decade. I guess what I'm saying is that reviewing a book on the 356 is not what I thought my first effort for this publication would be. I just couldn't help myself. When I first looked at this nice hardcover volume the package design really caught my eye. Having restored a few European cars and motorcycles has firmly engrained an appreciation for thorough research and a love of documented history. One of the hardest things to document on a fifty-year-old vehicle is what was correct and when it came along. Porsche as a manufacturer has constantly made running production changes to the product. This kind of thing can be as subtle as a relocated clutch cable retainer or as obvious as new hood chrome. This book documents the timeline very well. Long has collected a really impressive 242 photos (145 in color) for this volume. He apologizes for the quality of some but justifies including them for the historic value and I agree completely. There are numerous factory photos as well as lots of period sales material and racing art from the entire life of the 356. This is not just a coffee table book to be browsed through with the flat screen on. The author is quite thorough about taking us through the entire run of the 356 from it's inception to the final 356C. He documents the race machines along the way and speaks to the affects developing sales markets had on development of both the 356 and the Porsche Company. And there are photos of the Porsche family I had never seen before. As any 356 fan knows there are hundreds of different iterations of these cars over its production life and the author does a valiant job of covering them with photos and descriptions. There is a whole chapter on modern reproductions of the 356 and they are listed and rated by company so those of us who cannot afford the real thing or just want the look but not the patina can be aware of the various quality levels and pitfalls. There are appendixes that cover running changes on the engines, year by year detail changes, chassis numbers as well as the aforementioned replicas. Born in Coventry, the heart of the British motor industry, Brian Long comes from a family with a proud heritage in the automotive and aviation fields. He trained as a mechanical engineer, and worked for a time at his father's garage. Brian became heavily involved in the classic car scene at 19, and says he turned to writing by accident. He has a long association with several major car manufacturers, is a member of the Society of Automotive Historians, and a member of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He now writes full-time and, since 1990, when his first book was released, he has had more than 80 titles published. Brian currently lives with his family in Chiba, in Japan, where they enjoy life with their Dobermann and Thoroughbred racehorse.

I found this book very helpful. It was both a warning and an encouragement at the same time. It is a lesson in basic economics for lay people like me, as well as a call for common sense. I also have a new respect for the Zimbabwean people who are still struggling through the effects of appalling financial governance, and at the same time, I have a better understanding of what is happening globally right now.The greatest risk the world faces at present is not nuclear warfare or environmental disaster as so many think right now. It is a financial meltdown on a global scale. The authors’ state: “A worldwide government debt and currency crisis remains one of the largest of all global economic risks. It is certain that, if governments continue to pile up debts recklessly and to devalue their currency by printing money, a day of debt reckoning must come.” One just has to pay attention to much of the world news right now, and it’s easy to see this happening.The Zimbabwean lesson, which comes from a very small economy (which at the time had very little effect on the world as a whole), becomes much more of an issue when one applies it to the huge economies of the world today. “Zimbabwe’s government consumed too much and became highly indebted, complacent and over-reliant on foreign funders, while at the same time increasing its money supply in the economy. The government developed an unsustainable spending habit and when the funding suddenly dried up, it was left with two options: either take the hard road and live within its means or bumble down a potholed inflation road leading to destruction.”The authors state that “Since 2007, the UK and United States have become much more profligate – the United States government almost doubled its debt in the time period to 2013, and the UK government increased its debt by almost 2.5 times….. Like Zimbabwe, the industrialised countries are turning to money printing to revive their ailing economies. While the amounts of new money being printed are staggering, they have not yet been enough to spark runaway inflation. Nonetheless, these economies are adopting dangerous policies that history has shown are hard to reverse.”Ever-increasing debt and no ability to ever repay it! We’re facing a similar problem in South Africa right now. All the signs are there.But the book is not a doom-and-gloom chronicle. There was a lot that was encouraging too. In the midst of the most appalling conditions, ordinary Zimbabweans showed their resilience. What was of particular interest to me, as a Christian, was the way in which they overcame their problems - through community. “There was only one way to survive hyperinflation in Zimbabwe, and that was in community. As formal supply chains broke down, an intricate network of community supply evolved throughout the country. Instead of purchasing goods in shops, you had to rely on relationships with people who had access to the food and personal services you needed. In this way, the community developed a bartering network that was practically impossible for the government to control or regulate. Many of those we interviewed described how deeply bonding this process was and still speak of it with fondness and nostalgia. In the midst of the darkness, there was tremendous positivity among the people. It was the bright moon in the night of economic collapse. The deep value system shared across the cultures preserved the rule of law. Most Zimbabweans held Christian convictions that guided them to respect the rule of law, shunning personal aggression and respecting private property, basic social order and contracts. Business was done relationally rather than at arm’s length.”Whether this will be possible in much of the secular western remains to be seen – but people, generally, are far more resilient than we often give ourselves credit for.So, what we do about it? Well the authors do make a number of very practical personal suggestions, none of which I felt were ‘doomsday-ish’; but more importantly, their general observations were more helpful:If deficit spending and money printing ruin economies, we should establish a system that removes the state’s ability to go into debt and to control and print money. What, then, are the best structures to facilitate a sound and just money system? We strongly advocate that as a foundation, people must have freedom to choose whatever money they wish to use in trade. The only standard needs to be one of justice. If an organisation says that the money it issues has a certain backing, such as oil or gold, it must actually have that backing. The money must be what it says it is. At its basic root, this is about trading honestly. The underlying cause of hyperinflation is excessive government spending that precedes money printing. Governments should therefore have strict constitutional limitations on their ability to tax, spend and borrow. The lessons from Zimbabwe’s struggles are clear. When nations enact irresponsible economic policies and then print money to fix their problems, the inevitable result is economic ruin. This pattern has been repeated over and over in history, always with the same results.Voter activism can certainly play a role, but one wonders if the problems aren’t so deeply entrenched and all-pervading that even new governments will have to ‘fit in’? The authors certainly leave one with this impression, yet there is still the encouragement to do one’s bit! I can cut my own spending and reduce my own debt. I can look at ways to be less reliant on government and municipal structures and services. I can learn to grow more of my own food, and more. But ultimately, as a Christian, I know that my source is God. Not my savings; not my pension fund; not my business – and certainly not the social welfare system.I think the book should be required reading for all government ministers, especially those in charge of the finances; for all leaders in business, and in fact, for all those involved in community leadership of any kind.

This is a must read for students of monetary theory and the general public alike. The author is a native of South Africa and knows Zimbabwe very well. He has friends there and admires the people and the beautiful countryside. The destruction of the Zim dollar could hardly have cause more havoc than losing a war to a despised foreign power. Yet the Zimbabwe government itself was responsible and felt throughout the hyperinflation period that not only was it doing the right thing but that it could do nothing else. This is a lesson that I fear the rest of the world will learn soon enough. Today we may look down upon the Zimbabweans as foolish people, but our governments and central bankers are doing the same thing. Unfortunately, there is no "better" currency to which we can flee, as did the Zimbabweans to the dollar and the euro. Not only do we not learn from history, it appears that we are not even learning from current events.

As a resident of Zimbabwe during most of the period under discussion I found the book very interesting and an easy read with some useful insights. However I must admit that in some instances I found it to be superficial regarding the history of Zimbabwe. I appreciate that this is an economics book but the history and the players in that history had a significant impact upon the post 1980 independence period. In addition I got the impression from the book that the collapse of the electricity, water supply and other essential services was a result of the hyper inflation. In actuality these services had already been in a state off serious decline due to political interference and mismanagement. The hyperinflation merely exacerbated the decline of all these essential services. One aspect that the could have had more emphasis was the impact of corruption at all levels upon the economy. For example in 2006 a significant diamond find was made in the eastern province of Zimbabwe. It is common knowledge that significant inflows to the economy were lost through illicit exports. As to the solutions it must be noted that by 2000-2002 Zimbabwe already had a very active black market in Foreign currency trading. For other countries going through hyperinflation I would hazard a guess that a black market in goods and currency is essential. In first world countries relying on hi tech and sophisticated banking systems I am not sure that this is possible although I have no doubt that money laundering and similar activities take place.

A close friend of mine owns a 2006 GT (blue) and after riding in his beautiful car, I have been fascinated by this homegrown sports car! My collection of DVD's and books is growing, but this is THE book to have. Lots of very interesting technical reading along with excellent testimonials from the car owners themselves. Best of all...a picture tells a thousand words and there are lots of excellent photographs to enjoy. If you like the Ford GT (and who doesn't!), then this book will be THE ONE to obtain. I am thoroughly pleased and highly recommend it for your collection!

This book is excellent. It's probably a classic or "the" classic (I don't know it's not my field). I read it many years ago, probably just after it was published, and I still remember most of its lessons. Anyone interested in "weight studies" should buy and read this book.Reading a recent article on women's neurology I was astounded that the writers/scientists never once mentioned psychotherapy and the role of emotions and early childhood experiences in their literature analysis. It was as if anorexia and bulimia were genetic diseases, existing outside of culture. I know it's very hard to treat anorexia (bulimia is easier) but it is possible and Bruch outlines how to do it.

Love Hilde Bruch! The perspective is somewhat dated but it is also a classic. This book is not as accessible as the golden cage but it provides lots of helpful, historical, information.

This book is extremely insightful. It presents information, personal stories, and data in a way that is understandable to the layman. I would definitely recommend this to anyone dealing with an eating disorder. Dr. Burch addresses the causes and repercussions after reviewing the empirical data from patients that she herself observed.I read the book for anorexia. It was more insightful and helpful than any doctor I had seen.
