I picked up four books to read in anticipation of Oathbringer: the Mistborn trilogy and Edgedancer. The Mistborn trilogy isn’t very closely tied to the Stormlight Archive (but it is also the best Sanderson series I’ve read, so no harm, no foul). Edgedancer, on the other hand, is not only helpful but almost mandatory reading between Words of Radiance and Oathbringer. It is also a fine book itself, although it can’t stand alone.Edgedancer is labeled as “Stormlight 2.5.†Sanderson realized that he hadn’t sufficiently fleshed out a character introduced in an interlude to Words of Radiance (Sanderson is increasingly drawing characters from seemingly unconnected interludes into the main story). Lift is an Edgedancer will the ability to heal and the ability to reduce the friction of her body so she can do things like glide along the ground. An attempt to rob the imperial palace in Azimir results in one of her fellow thieves being named emperor (not a popular job with an assassin killing heads of state).With Gawx as emperor, Lift has a place in Azimir. She flees, nonetheless, to Yeddaw, a city built in a maze of Shardblade-cut trenches. But Yeddaw means an inevitable confrontation with Darkness, the same Surgebinder that was hunting her during the Words of Radiance interlude.Lift is a great character. She is irreverent. Sanderson’s goofy sense of humor usually doesn’t do it for me, but Lift is really funny. Her material even gets a bit *gasp* blue. A highlight is her relationship with her “pet Voidbringer†Wyndle (her spren). Sanderson uses her for some cool worldbuilding in addition to her role in the story (she shows up in a quasi-significant role in Oathbringer). She visited the Nightwatcher and uses food, not Stormlight, to fuel her Surgebinding.You might notice that Edgedancer is billed as a novella but listed as 270 pages on Amazon. The hardcover, at least, is pocket-sized so the page count is inflated. As best I can tell, Edgedancer is around 40,000 words, which is right at the Hugo Awards dividing line between the novella and novel categories.
For starters this can be read as a stand alone, I wouldn't recommend reading it that way and implore you to read the first two Stormlight books before diving in as there are some spoilers to the main series. This book has the feel of an epic saga and it is a fun insight into the character, Lift, who first appears in the Stormlight Archives.The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the ending left me wanting more satisfaction and answers to the character’s motivations. The final scenes all happen so quickly and major characters development/changes happen in a few sentences. I will have to go back and read the final scenes again because I'm left with questions at some of the philosophy of the characters we meet and dramatic character shifts. Being left in mostly Lift's POV, the inner struggles and thoughts of the other characters can only be guessed at. Therefore huge leaps of character development are done through her eyes. Seeing as how this book was already longer than it should have been, I can only imagine what I am asking for would have made it that much longer. Choices were made and I definitely would have liked more :).I enjoy the youthfulness and spontaneity of Lift and I am happy to have more one on one time with her character as an extra bonus to the Stormlight Archives. This was an incredible teaser to the upcoming November release and I'm super excited for the third installment, Oathbringer!!
Admittedly, I was one who did not like Lift a whole lot on my first read of Words of Radiance--but she grew on my by my second read-through in preparation for Oathbringer; and when I found out about Edgedancer I decided it would be worth it to spend a little more time with Lift. I was not disappointed. The first two books in the Stormlight Archive really are required reading in order to fully appreciate Edgedancer--and especially to understand character motivations. Additionally, a P.S. by Sanderson at the end of this novella suggests that it's an important read to understand at least one (and maybe two) character developments that are suddenly presented in the upcoming Oathbringer without being treated fully in that novel. In short, if you loved The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, you should love how this novella transports you back to the world of Roshar.
3.5I usually rate Brandon Sanderson's book higher, but I really struggled with the first half of the book. My problem was Lift, the main character, she's young and immature and I don't like her. I get her, the book is very well written, amazing world building, but I spent most of the book frustrated at her for not listening to Wyndle...or anyone.My husband convinced me to keep reading, predicting an amazing character growth, and it did happen. The last chapters were amazing, everything made sense and things were revealed. I really loved WOK and WOR, but I don't feel the need to reread Edgedancer right now, which tells me how much I liked or disliked a book. You should read it though, it's necessary information before reading Oathbringer.
One thing I've noticed about fandom regarding The Stormlight Archives is that there are two groups of readers. One group absolutely loves Lift. The other group not so much. I fall into the latter category.Edgedancer, though brief, was a chore to read. I didn't like Lift in Words of Radiance, but thought that by reading Edgedancer, I'd get a better understanding of her. It only just furthered my dislike of Lift. She mostly just wanders around until the plot tells her what to do next. I found myself unable to last a few chapters without dozing off.If you enjoyed Lift's chapter in Words of Radiance, you'd enjoy this book. If not, skip it.
