Review

"Picoult and her daughter, Van Leer, have created a multilayered universe where what is real is in the eye of the beholder." --"VOYA""Picoult and her coauthor daughter deliver an enjoyable, metafictive twist on the traditional teen-romance novel.... Book lovers in particular are likely to get a kick out of the blurring of the lines between character and reader, fact and fiction.... Fizzy fairy-tale fun." --"Kirkus Reviews""A compulsively readable charmer. The teen dialogue and interior monologues feel authentic, while Picoult's practiced hand balances humor with larger issues such as abandonment, hope, and existential quandaries related to fate and human nature. Both silhouette and pencil drawings abound; characters climb in and around the text to excellent effect. Younger readers and their parents will appreciate the gentle, wholesome romance, with nary a shred of paranormal action. The tender, positive tone and effective pacing that builds to a satisfying finish will inspire readers to pass the book to a friend--or reread it themselves." --"Booklist""A clever YA romance about the magical relationship between a loner and her fictional "Prince Charming." Elements from Picoult's other novels--alternating character viewpoints with distinguishing fonts, snappy chapter endings--are present, and the story is peppered with pop culture references to The Hunger Games, the Kindle Fire, and the X-Men, as well as comic relief in the form of characters like a talking horse that thinks it has a weight problem. Readers...will be swept up by the romantic premise." --"Publishers Weekly""Engagingly written...a fun romp that fans of both fairy tales and teen romance will enjoy." --Shelf Awareness for Readers"Between the Lines" is a romance between a girl and a boy, but even more, it's a love letter to the visceral bond between a reader and a musty, beloved book.... The fictional "Between the Lines" is funny and unexpected...and it's fascinating to watch the authors address the problem of what it would be like to live not just in a story, but in a physical book..." --"The Washington Post""An exceedingly clever concept that would be challenging to pull off, if not for the deep understanding of character, plot and pacing provided by Picoult... Conceptually, "Between the Lines" is reminiscent of the "Toy Story" movies... An exploration of the nature of escapism that asks whether reality is any more real than make-believe, "Between the Lines" will delight readers of all ages whose imaginations willfully blur that distinction.""--Los Angeles Times" Copyright (c) 2012, Los Angeles Times

"Between the Lines" is such a fun, light-hearted and feel good story. Many people have given this book poor reviews, but I think it's simply because the story wasn't intended for them. Since I actually read the synopsis of this book beforeI read it, I knew this was a YA novel written by Jodi Picoult and her daughter. I don't just read a book because an author I like has their name on it, which seems to be the case for many reviewers. I love many of Picoult's stories, but I knew this would be completely different. However, it wasn't a bad different at all. This book seems to be for a younger YA, maybe even late MG age bracket, although the characters are 15-16. I definitely think it will appease readers, most likely females, ages 12-16. Although, I'm in my 20s and loved it. I read the whole story in two days and I was completely enraptured. I thought the idea was ingeniously creative and well-executed. The reader gets the perspectives of Oliver--the Prince stuck in the fairy tale--and Delilah--the protagonist from the "real" world. The authors also include the actual fairy tale story, which I thought was a great touch. It flowed nicely, and it never seemed to drag. When reading fairy tales, it's okay if they seem unrealistic--that's what makes it a fantasy story to begin with. For a high school student, the writing was eloquent, and had several funny quotes. I chuckled out loud quite a few times. I am in awe of Miss van Leer because she wrote and published a story similar to what I always imagined I'd want to write, at such a young age, too. I hope she keeps writing because I'd love to read her next book, hopefully done on her own.I'd. recommend this story to anyone who loves fairy tales, romance, and light-hearted stories. It was nice to not be crying during one of Jodi Picoult's books because, as the story says, everyone deserves a happy ending!

A totally delightful book that everyone needs to read. The twists and turns were really good. I also like how that the relationship between Prince Oliver and Delilah develops in this story. I also really enjoyed the way that Delilah and Oliver each have their own lives within their given spheres.Delilah seems like your typical teenage girl who happens to love a certain fairytale. Yet when she reads the fairy tale, she notices that certain things are changing within the fairy tale. Oliver and the other characters are very different within the fairy tale itself. They have the roles that they play within the fairy tale, but have lives and are very different within the fairytale. We also learn that Delilah and Oliver can communicate with each other. At first Delilah think she is losing her mind, but finds that Oliver wants to get out of the book. So Delilah and Oliver try to find different ideas, none of them working out very well. One of the things that I liked was the fact that they had incorporated some of the other things that teenagers go through with their parents. I really liked the relationship between Delilah and her mother. Oliver’s relationship with his fairy tale mother. Plus even the relationship between Edgar and his mother, who happened to be the one who wrote Between The Lines, title of the fairytale. I really enjoyed it a lot.The other thing that I loved about this book was the illustrations. The illustrations were absolutely beautiful. I felt that as we were reading the fairy tale part of Between The Lines the art really represented some of the good parts of what you love about fairy tales when you were young. The illustrator of this book really did a good job. I totally enjoyed the illustrations as they made the book a much richer experience for me as a reader. Also when Delilah meets Edgar and his mother, it comes as a very different experience for her. She finds that Edgar was the model for Prince Oliver. So Delilah after spending some time with Edgar tells him of what has been going on. Edgar comes up with a very inventive idea. Since they can’t change the story, how about they write a new story. This idea seems to work and Edgar is now in the new story and Oliver is now in Edgar’s place. I also like how everybody seem to get their happily ever after.I totally loved this book and the characters. Plus the illustrations really made this book special to me.Rating:4.5 Hearts

Delilah is a loner, a misfit, and a dreamer. She prefers spending her time buried in a book - Between the Lines - which is a fairy tale that has captured her imagination. The main character Prince Oliver feels so real to her. Then one day he talks to her...Oliver is tired of repeating the same series of events over and over whenever anyone opens the pages of the book. He really isn't at all enchanted with the princess that his is destined to save. While lovely, Seraphina isn't very bright and, besides, his best friend Frump who was magically turned into a dog has a major crush on her. This was an imaginative and engaging story. Who hasn't thought that the characters in books had a secret life when the covers were closed? I liked Oliver's determination in finding a way to get out of the story and Delilah's determination to help him. I liked what this book said about the power of story.
