I got this last minute as I came across it late one night. I added it to my daughters book filled Easter basket and it was the prefect touch! We love the dark illustrations and story line, I’ve watched cox Chanel’s movie and documentaries so I loved that I could follow along and show my 1 year old this history early on! Can’t wait to own the whole book collection!

This entire series of books are wonderful. Each book is a short biography of a significant artist, scientist, aviator, etc. I particularly like this one because it's about fashion and shows how a woman who was an orphan became one of the most successful fashion influencers in history.

Love this series of books! I am all about books that can be decor but also read and this is one of them + I love the ideas of these books for my daughter. Would make a great gift for a baby shower for any mom that is a fashion lover as well.

We came across the series of Little People, Big Dreams books and mommy of course NEEDED to get our daughter the Coco one. Although the story does tell some background information about THE Coco Chanel, it gives it in such a small summary that you want more! But then you immediately remember that this is for a small child, haha. So, this makes a great bed time story with its lovable drawings and its simple facts storyline. We HIGHLY recommend all the books in the LP, BD series.

The book is very resistant, the cover is hard and it looks like it will last long. The story of Chanel is also very nice. My daughter's name is Gabriela so it was even easier for her to relate. I was even able to talk a little about Paris because the book had a drawing of Eiffel tower as part of the story. This is my first book of this collection and will purchase a second one with no doubt.

I bought this little book for my granddaughter. I want her to know about strong and independent women and to appreciate resilience. Great story; checked off all my boxes.

I have just finished reading The Gulf, and found it completely engaging. It is an excellent lens through which to view U.S. environmental history. Though environmental history is by definition an expansive field, I doubt there are many researchers who have carried out the wide-ranging artistic, literary, sociological, scientific, and even medical research, to name but a few fields, that this author has drawn on to write the book.I downloaded the book on my Kindle thinking I would skim it lightly while spending some time on the Florida coast. I did not expect to read the chapters about the Gulf's creation and evolution, nor its early history. But once engaged I could not put the book down. The author’s prose flows beautifully, resulting in a refreshingly accessible book that is also very informative. In my view it is a tour de force.I hope it will be read widely, not only because it is so informative but also because it illuminates the environmental destruction that we as a society have allowed in the U.S. May it serve as a warning against future such acts and planning, and encourage conservation and respect for the land and natural resources that are ours to enjoy if we do the right thing.

I've lived on or near the GULF most of my life from Florida to Texas to Cancun Mexico. This book made me appreciate the GULF all the more from it's archeology to it's great staining by British Petroleum & Anadarko oil blowouts. I found the author fair and balanced in his perspectives, including the mixed blessings of OIL, but saddening me on what we've all lost. Just in my life time I've already seen the effects of orange grove fertilizer run off ruining the ecology of he lake I grew up on NON-SWIMABLE or fishable... To the bleached reefs & oil stains on my feet in Galveston beach. The book is a great mix of ecology, archeology, history and natural beauty to man made disaster. Sadly this book on THE GULF only covers the American Gulf coast. Much the GULF extends into Mexico, Central America & South America .. or is my geography over extended. Much of those Golf of Mexico coasts are NOT as despoiled …. YET.... I hope the future & global warming is kinder to the GULF than …….

My favorite history books are those which read like a story, with a well-developed set of characters, times, and places. And in my opinion, The Gulf is just that: a wonderful journey through the coasts of 5 U.S. states; through rivers, bays, estuaries, and Mangrove forests; through centuries of time. The dark side to this story is, of course, all of the human environmental damage which it exposes.This book should appeal to anyone who enjoys U.S. history, appreciates exquisitely crafted prose, and wants to learn more about the impacts that we have made on the natural world around us.[In the interest of full disclosure, I am a close personal friend of the author.]

Anyone who eats seafood, cares about dolphins, likes to breathe fresh air, and drink (and swim in) clean water should read this book, particularly those living in gulf states. History here plays the role of revealing the beauty and the abundance that have been lost in the Gulf of Mexico, all written in spritely style with fascinating portraits of persons living and dead, who participated, for good or for ill, in shaping the environment we have inherited.Although Davis holds out hope for this region, his book is nonetheless a catalog of spoliation, from the disappearance of native groups to the appearance of a "dead zone" of tens of thousands of square miles in what were once pristine, life-filled waters.This would make a good read for our ecologically challenged president.

As a geologist who was born in Key West more than 80 years ago I found This book full of interesting information about the Gulf of Mexico. The writing style is outstanding. For example how many fishermen know why they are called anglers? The chapter on Tarpon was mostly new to me. I thought I knew all about fishing. It's a wonder there are any birds left considering what the feather hunters (for womens hats) did before 1900. The effects of hurricanes, especially the Glaveston 1900 hurricane, that wiped out the island was horrifying (I have been there many times). I thought the writers attitude toward offshore drilling was a little severe. Nevertheless this is an outstanding book that was well researched.

I loved every page of this book. I learned so much about our Gulf’s history. But, even more important, I learned about how man’s efforts to create and protect our tourism and industry on the Gulf led to serious unintended consequences which threaten both industry and tourism.

I've lived by the gulf for most of my life and witnessed many of the things that the author wrote about. What a fascinating in-depth look at our very valuable natural resource. I highly recommend it to anyone familiar with the gulf coast.

very well written .The first 2/3rds of the book is history.The last 1/3rd is a blend of history and "reporting" on the overly cozy relatioins between states and their principal industries which leads to all manner of disgusting malfeasance but also illustrates how one or two tireless voices can be a potent force for justice.If you live in a gulf coast state this is MUST reading.

This work would not be enjoyed by any who regard the Hebrew and Christian books as the words of the deity but it can proviide valuable insights any with an inquiring mind. It is a short work ((text just under 2200 pages), but I believe many will want to come to it again in a second reading.

This book is excellent if you want a summary. If you want depth, you should use another source. The author doesn't "preach at the reader." He encourages people to read the book and THINK about what is being said.

This book presents a brief and rather spotty overview of the Bible. It is in fact an introduction only to a very complex set of writings with a few bits of insight here and there. If one is to understand that the Bible is a collection of writings done by various communities of people and or individuals within certain historic circumstances, then I think the book succeeds. This is a very broad-stroke approach.

The writer shares his view of understanding and learning from the other great religions and finds compromise with the other sages, Mystics and prophets. A good read!

I have read enough of the Old Testament to realize I'm not willing to spend my time reading all of it. This book gives valuable background and summaries that are way better use of my time. The reader gets to know what's in there (the Bible) and what is known about how it got there. It's a lot better than focusing on various "special" bible verses or stories.

Useful overview of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. A rational, evidence based look at the context at the time the stories developed and were written. A good place to start.

I recommend this book to everyone I know, no matter what their religion or lack there of! Rev. Buehrens helps open up the Bible and educate you enough to read it and come to your own conclusions, whether you agree with everything he says or not. I'm a new Muslim and highly recommend this to all people because the Bible truly is part of literature and history and should be read and known by all. I was actually recommended this book by a rabbi friend who believes that despite it covering the ENTIRE Bible (Old and New Testaments), he points out that it shows the literary importance and historical importance of the work as a whole, no matter what your(dis)beliefs are.Take the time and READ THIS BOOK!

Make the filling: Bring cream just to a boil in a small saucepan; pour over chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl. Let sit 10 minutes, then stir until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is combined. Pour into coconut crust. Refrigerate until filling is set, 1 hour or up to 1 day.

I have all of Martha Stewart's cookbooks, so I was pretty excited when this one arrived.Some of the other reviewers have gone in great detail about the exact recipes etc., so I won't bore you with that.What I love about this cookbook (as with the rest of her cookbooks) are:1) a photo for each recipe! I really dislike cookbooks that have a recipe and no photo, particularly for desserts. after all, i want to know what it is going to look like.2) very clear, concise, and reliable directions.3) it's very clearly organized (both the cookbook and each recipe)4) a short blurb on the top for each recipe giving you tips/pointers5) excellent step-by-step photos/directions in the back of the book for making pate sucree or pate brisee or puff pastry.I trust Martha Stewart and know she will not put her name on a recipe unless it has been tested over and over.She hasn't failed met yet!First pie I made was chocolate cream pie. Yes, it's a novice pie, but I have a 3 yr old so I wanted a crowd pleaser (or rather a kid-pleaser). Easy to follow directions for the crust, filling and whipped topping. It was absolutely delicious and looked professional. Pie was finished by my guests.Second thing I made was the fruit tart. Rather than do the mini tarts, I did two nine-inch tarts (and she has notes in case you want to do a lot of mini ones or larger 9-inch tarts). Made the pate sucre, made the vanilla pastry cream the day before (my husband and kids licked the spoon from that!) and assembled it a few hours before serving. Beautiful, delicious and I was so pleased with the results.I highly recommend this cookbook, and with her clear instructions, beautiful photos and wide assortment of crowd-pleasing recipes, I know this will be one I will be referring to over and over. Wow. I was looking for a great pie book or two, and passed this one over at first because, Martha Stewart, boring, right? But after buying / looking at several newer, blogger-style, seasonal, artisan, pie-goddess type books and not liking them at all, I ordered this book because it was inexpensive and I thought it might be a good reference. OMG, I love it! There are so many recipes that I'm dying to make, it's hard to decide where to start. The photos are gorgeous, and the instructions are clear and simple. Most recipes are very straight-forward and look like they will be easy to execute. I'm thrilled with this book and not even looking at another.

I'm sure this is a perfectly fine cookbook for someone but it wasn't the one for me. I have the cookie one like this and love it but returned this one the same day it arrived. I just want classic pies with a few new fangled things thrown in.

I was THRILLED to see this book arrive as I am a " cake and bread baker" and in my yrs of baking,,,,, I can probably count the number of pies I have made on one hand~Shameful ,,,,and I considered myself a "baker"?? I have made it a priority this year to bake favorite pies for birthdays , home celebrations , picnics and potlucks ~ I thought it was high time I face this challenge head on . I bought tiny pie tins for the children's pies after picking a load of apples from our small orchard I do think the addition of fruit in many pies/tarts has a healthier edge than heavy layer cakes which I had made for so many years~ and of course, one can control the sweetness~I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of the first tart I made which was the peach and berry tart.( First chapter) It is easily made up in only a few minutues, then baked~I baked this for DH to take to a men's breakfast at church ~It was so pretty that someone said it looked more like decoration than dessert! And it was my FIRST tart! But the TASTE was even better!( he saved a piece for me) I did use the called for addition of cornmeal to the tart crust and it did have a great flavor in an all fruit tart which is now my favorite tart!The tart looked GORGEOUS and made it look like I was an expert pie baker , I can assure you I am not! I did things a bit different tho, and I am assuming for the most part a lot of the pies are subject to individual taste~ I made this in an 8" tart pan( because it looked prettier!) and added a few nectarines in w/ the peaches, which made for an excellant taste~I DID however have to add more than double sugar suggested, and I do not have a huge sweet tooth , so maybe the fruit pies are way way under the sweetness range for me?? But perhaps not for you~I have had tarts in Europe and do realize that they do use less sugar all the way around except for maybe Austria or Germany?I had to double the amount of time baking this tart even tho my oven temp is spot on,, I did have some pie covers that I had collected( and never used!) that I topped over the very crust so the top would not get burned,,,,,so far,,so good,,,I think this is all part of the learning curve for me b/c the apple pies and pumpkin pies came out perfect as per recipe in the book.I won't give a whole list of the pies, other reviewers have been kind enough to do so,,but I will say as my confidence in pie making grows I will be happily baking those birthday PIES this year ~ my favorite is mile high lemon,,,,,DH, cherry pie from our own trees. I really wanted to master pie making as we grow a TON of cherries, berries and have a lot of fruit trees that have now matured enough to bear a lot,,,,,so now is THE time! And , being so blessed to have a mini orchard on our land, I wanted to USE it to its best potential b/c the price of fruit is getting higher by the week. I am hoping to look up to see if I can freeze a pie unbaked) so I can have a fresh pie to go when we have people over for a quick brunch or dinner, I have heard this can be done but will have to look at this further has anyone done this successfully I wonder?)I cannot see how any baker could be bored with this book , it is a gorgeous COLLECTION of many pies one can bake and the photograpy is stunning~( so you can see just how your pie is to look finished! Some of us NEED this.... which is often missing in cookbooks or e recipesI like inspiration, and to see what I can bake w/ what I happen to have on hand in any particular season ,as I said, we grow a lot of berries and cherries that I used to freeze for toppings to cakes which is kind of sad now that I think of it~ While I work my way thru the pie book I will be careful to taste fruits and berries, and even cremes so I am certain they are up to my taste levelI do think that it will only be a taste thing with the fruit tho~Only one problem,,,,,THE famous " Elegant Farmer Pie" baked in a brown bag which has been on cooking shows to compete with) has never been duplicated w/ accuracy yet!I know, I live a few miles from where they make this great pie but I am sure going to look it up on the net.Love love love the book! My husband is also happy, because it is true,many people are pie lovers first and cake lovers second~ One big disclaimer here,,,,I do NOT eat much sugar , I my eat pie maybe 3 times a year?? But I LOVE to bake and bake I do,,,,,for others!This book is a very good thing~

I especially like the illustrations that accompany the instructions for making dough in a food processor. The instructions show what the dough should look like at every stage of the process. Mr. Tremper Longman, has written a very well-thought-out book. However, I must take exception with a couple of major points. First, ten separate occasions in his work does he make the statement that there is unquestionable, “overwhelming scientific evidence” for the truth of the theory of evolution. Yes, I know this is not a science book but he never attempts to layout any evidence at all. Actually, the truth is that the evidence is scarce. For example, no one can document any example of any creature becoming a new type of creature. Yes, I know that “it can’t be seen because it takes millions and millions of years.” However, the simple organism known as the fruit fly, Drosophila, has been actually studied for a hundred years. College biology students, such as myself, once bred these fast-reproducing creatures. Professional scientists have tried every genetic mutating trick to try to get the fly to at least start evolving into a new creature. Millions upon millions of generations of the fly have been bred for a hundred years by thousands of people. The result was absolutely no genetic change. Double leg or wings disappeared the next generation. If evolution was true, this experiment with a very simple creature should have produced something. No, Darwin’s birds changing beak structure is not macroevolution.Second, the most important geological event as related in Genesis did not merit more than a passing paragraph. Here is the key to total belief in the “Young Earth” understanding. The great flood of Genesis was real and destroyed the surface of the entire earth. Evolutionists cannot explain the existence of thousands of feet of water-borne sediment found all throughout the earth. What’s even more interesting, evolutionists can not explain the existence of the massive underground lakes of fossil fuels, buried a mile deep, found in thousands of locations throughout the world. The fuels, once living organisms, had to be buried quickly or become soil. But, being buried quickly, the anaerobic bacteria converted the organic material into oil, methane, and coal. Only the biblical account of a worldwide flood explains the massive amounts of trillions of barrels of oil buried, not to forget the coal beds.So, two important accounts the author either doesn’t know about or simply ignored.
