After reading this book, I am an even bigger fan of Ann-Margret. I especially like the way she handled the subject of her relationship with Elvis. I have read many books about him where the women would go into unnecessary details. It felt like they were just dying to tell the world that they slept with him. But Ann-Margret held her relationship with Elvis dear and sacred to her heart. I feel that she honored and respected his memory in doing this. You are a truly classy lady, Ann-Margret!

As a Elvis fan, this book is really great and I just adore Ann’s stories about the two of them. They had such a wonderful times together.As a Ann-Margret fan, I’m in LOVE with her even more now. Her life is full of ao many joyous, surprising and difficult times. Definitely worth the purchase!!

This is a good vocabulary book for beginners of the Russian language. I knew about 90% of the words, so it wasn't of great help to me, but I have been studying Russian for quite a few years... so that stands to reason. I downloaded it because it was within the FREE kindle books list I get emailed to me every day. Being the language I have studied, I decided to go ahead and get it and see if there were some words I could learn from the free book.I give it a four-star rating because I would prefer more detailed book, and because it is a good book for beginners.

Very useful material, I got it for my friends who want to learn Russian. Whoever gets this book have to keep in mind that this is a COMPANION for an audio book, thats why there are no transliterations for Cyrillic. Or find a Russian friend to vocalize the words, like I did for my friends (I speak Russian).Ms Lina

It's probably a good book if you already know Russian pretty well. It's all in Cyrillic with English translations but not phonetic transliterations. I have learned the Cyrillic alphabet but it takes awhile for me to "sound out" words so this book was way beyond me.

Excellent read for someone looking for a new hobby for retirement years.

I like the book. I had one in college when I took Russian and now it's a little hard to remember how to pronounce their alphabet. I love the language and it's nice to have a simple book with which to study it.

because of the price I can say that's good, it has good vocabulary but it's not complete. I expected that words would come with examples that would teach me how to use it but it didn't, anyways it's good vocabulary.

I was not thrill with it, I expected a more audio feedback to assist me in my learning. Maybe it is me, because I found it a little hard to get going with the program.

Oh for the love of books! MY love of books! We homeschool and books are such a big part of our lifestyle. We have a basket we fill with books depending on the holiday or season. This one on the Pilgrims is a great one and history rich, but just enough so that it is entertaining and fun for the kids to hear. We got this when my daughter was almost 7 and we have loved it. The illustrations are fabulous and seem to take you back to a simpler place in time. This is one you NEED on your bookshelf.

Pretty straight forward. Says people died and got ill but does not show it or dwell on it. I would say this is good for first grade and up.

I read this to my 3-4 year old preschool class. I read It like a chapter book. Each day at story time, I would read a "chapter" divided in the book by season. Then we would have plenty of time to talk about what we read. So many interesting details in this book that my class enjoyed. This will be read every year!

My children are 3 and 5 at this time (boy and girl) and I have been having a hard time finding a good age appropriate book about Thanksgiving.When they were younger I used "The Story of Thanksgiving" boardbook by Nancy J. Skarmeas. A book that is pretty much on target for the toddler and early preschool crowd. But what to do now? I looked at several books and none seemed to be appropriate. They were either too cynical, or too babyish. This book however pretty much fits the bill. The text talks in terms that preschoolers and kindergarteners understand. And it talks about hardship but isn't too graphic. An example of text follows.The Mayflower was a big as two trucks.But it was not big enough.The Pilgrims and sailors crowded together to sleep.They crowded together to eat.The children had no room to run around.They had no toys.They had to leave most things behind.These are details which my children could relate to.Five Stars. We ran across the older version illustrated by Joe Lasker, and while the new artwork by Ekroy Freem looks really good (and is the one that's available now on Amazon) I wouldn't worry if you wanted to get the older version either.

We prepared Thanksgiving dinner in France for some French friends, and I got this book to help me explain the story of the first Thanksgiving. The book is perfect! Great pictures, simple language structure, but not juvenile. Perfect for adults with a little knowledge of English!

The drawings are great and the kids seem to enjoy it.. The sentences are straight forward and probably every page has some good drawings. My 9th great grandfather was on the Mayflower, and the info in the book is pretty good on historical accuracy without all the political retelling that sometimes is associated with this story but isn't really how the people thought about it when it happened. Maybe it was the declarative sentences that made it seem matter of fact instead of grandiose...

Great for comparing and contrasting for Thanksgiving with Kindergarten kiddos.

This book was recommended to go with colored beads to form a bracelet to help kids remember the Pilgrim story.Brown-pilgrims, blue bead-ocean, white-sails on the Mayflower, green-land sighting, yellow-corn,, tan- Indians, etc.It is easy for kids to understand.

I want to start off by stating I did not read any other reviews of this book before purchasing and before writing my review. I want to thank the author for writing one amazing book that did not have one word or sentence that did not help. We were looking to retire possibly overseas, and Panama was a place that was tooted as number one by those who make money on it. She does not - other than the these books. I do realize her view is from her own experience and where she lived and working there, but it sure explain things one would never know otherwise. Many of the things I wanted to get away from are worse there and having worked for the US Government for 37 years and having dealt with that, it almost seems like they modeled how poorly the US government is run after Panama daily life. I could not take dealing with that again. That alone made me cross off Panama. What I saw as restful nice place to retire is really like a new job dealing with all the things I despise that I will not mention here. Yes, it is their country and customs, but not for me.All that said, do buy and read this book because life in Panama is nicely explained in this well-written book and will certainly be the best step you ever made to find a nice retirement spot. There are better, less costly places to live in the USA. It is best to read this book to learn for yourself so all this can be understood.Please do buy this book it is worth it on many levels. I am just so pleased with it. Again, I thank the author. Although I am NOT going to Panama, I just bought her second book (II) as I found it so interesting. The author eventually moved to Costa Rica, I hope she is writing a book on it.

Just an okay book that really should have been titled "The Gringo Guide to Panama City, Panama" since no other part of the country is addressed anywhere. There author seems to have moved to Panama City with her husband with expectations of starting a business in that city. While there are some good insights to the Panamanian culture, other lifestyles such as retirement are pretty much ignored, especially in outlying areas.It is a rather small book and simply did not have the depth that I was looking for.

Amazing amount of useful information regarding a lot of what you'd need and think about when you got there. As I said in a review of the follow up book, be sure to get as current as possible information about any future move. Countries like Panama have varying degrees of modern and traditional and the young folk and immigrants cause the need for growth in certain parts of the country, but not all. It is well written, and gives you a lot to think about. Research 1st as much as you can, then you won't be too surprised.

This book contains some basic information about life in Panama. It seems to be pretty much an amateur author's description of what she encountered when she moved there. It is not a "list," or a point-by-point explanation of requirements for living in Panama. Bit it is a description of her personal experiences as a new immigrant. She recounts stories of her activities and reactions to the daily events, such as shopping and hiring contract help and hooking up the internet. The best thing about this book is that it gives you a "warning" about what to expect, sort of a culture-shock awareness course - because life in Panama is NOT the same as life in the U.S. She writes as if she were having a conversation with you...

Several months ago my wife planned a Caravan trip to Panama as a recon mission for a possible retirement destination. She had already researched quite a bit and all that she had uncovered pretty much described Panama as pure Paradise. I, of course, wanted to learn more and came upon The Gringo Guide on Amazon. It was a real eye opener for both of us. The book is straight forward and well written. Ms. Vance has done an excellent job of describing the "real" Panama. Without it, I feel we would have been a bit shocked at what we encountered without forewarning. This is not to say Panama was a disappointment - on the contrary, it is a beautiful and unique country. But this book best prepared us for what to expect. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone deciding to travel there and who want a better feel of the people and the country.

Ms. Vance does a great job in setting one's expectations about living in Panama as an expat. She describes the culture, interacting with Panamanians in a business setting, and helped to educate us about the realities of living in a foreign country. I learned a great deal about how to somewhat "lower" my expectations by not doing the comparison thing between the U.S. and Panama. As she states in the book, "you'll beat your head against the wall...". The only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is that I would've liked to have had some additional examples of the daily frustrations. However, overall, it's a great, quick read that will quickly give an overview of moving to Panama!

As one who has lived in the US, Panama and other places, I appreciated the accurate insights into what to expect (everything takes time!), the engaging voice and the accurate info. She tells it like it is. The lower rating is because, at least to me, the sense I got from the author was that she did not have much overseas experience. Some of the comments in ch. 1 about how you’ll be SO frustrated living there, how everyone eventually wants to run away screaming struck me as coming from a view of a person who had experienced only this culture. We lived there and while what the author describes is accurate, her reactions were not at all mine. I found the book discouraging and was glad it was not the text I had to rely on to prepare me.

In the fall of 1537, a child was confined to bed for some time. The French poet Clément Marot wrote her a get-well poem, 28 lines long, each line a scant three syllables. In the mid-1980s, the outrageously gifted Douglas R. Hofstadter--il miglior fabbro of Godel, Escher, Bach--first attempted to translate this "sweet, old, small elegant French poem into English." He was later to challenge friends, relations, and colleagues to do the same. The results were exceptional, and are now contained in Le Ton Beau De Marot, a sunny exploration of scholarly and linguistic play and love's infinity. Less sunny, however, is the tragedy that hangs over Hofstadter's book, the sudden death of his wife, Carol, from a brain tumor. (Her translation is among the book's finest.) Marot's poem, in Hofstadter's initial translation (he is to compose many more), begins: "My sweet, / I bid you / A good day; / The stay / Is prison. / Health / Recover, / Then open / Your door ... "--a slim frame on which to hang 600 or so pages of text. But the book is far more than a compendium of translators' triumphs (with the occasional misstep). Most of the renderings are original and lively, some lovely, though Hofstadter often feels compelled to improve them. He lightly laments that Bill Cavnar's rendering, "though superb along so many dimensions at once, still seems to lack a bit of that intangible verbal sparkle that I associate with the deepest Maroticity." Hofstadter's talents lie in linking his intoxication, erudition, and vision with humor, autobiography, and free association. His book takes on "rigidists," asks questions like, "Is plagiarism potentially creative?" and strives to define linguistic soul. Along the way, it accords the same level of respect to the seemingly trivial: sex jokes, Texas jokes, The Seven Year Itch, and the puzzle of how someone you love can hate a food that you adore. Throughout there is pun, ingenuity, and above all, love for language--which can compress distance and, through constraint, lead to freedom.

Clement Marot (1496-1544) may have been a great French poet, but "A une Da-moyselle malade" is not his best effort. Essentially it's a get-well greeting: sorry that you're sick, but try to eat something and get some fresh air. The ditty serves as a springboard for Hofstadter's thoughts about language, translation, culture and human genius as the author, his friends, translators, scholars and even computer programs contribute to numbing permutations of this one weak lyric. Hofstadter, a professor of artificial intelligence at Indiana University, had bestsellers with the 1980 Pulitzer Prize-winning Godel, Escher, Bach and a collection of essays reprinted from Scientific American, called Metamagical Themas. Here he is on shakier ground. Hofstadter is not a poet but doesn't hesitate to lay out his opinions: for example, all rhyming translations of "Eugene Onegin" are "excellent" and "fine," but he trashes Vladimir Nabokov's monumental and helpful literal version; he also calls Lolita "pedophilic pornography." And while there are moments of wit, intelligence and uncommon curiosity, there is also a diffuse structure and inflated?and sometimes hokey?prose: "In SimTown, many other things can happen including houses being set on fire and goldfish flopping out of their bowls. (I'm leaving off the quotes merely as a shorthand?I know they aren't real goldfish!)". His cheery gee-whizzery often rings false, and there's probably a good reason for the hollow sound?in 1993, his wife died of a rare disease, which probably also explains his choice of the verse. I find this a terrific text to use to make a point about translations in class - a point that also reflects on the meaning of a text or utterance in one's own language as well. Quine - all translation is a lie. Well, at least there is an element of ambiguity that creeps in when we delve into the meaning. But what I do is take many versions of the translation and have students read them aloud noticing that they do not appear to have a clue that the "poem" is the same one. Then I uncover the one French poem that they have all been reading translations of and surprise! The discussion starts. Do we understand ourselves?

One of my favorite books, this is by the author of "Godel, Escher, Bach". Impossible to categorize accurately, it's a very extended riff on the difficulties and challenges of translation, carried out with a kind of beguiling enthusiasm. It shares the playfulness that characterized "Godel, Escher, Bach" but I found it more accessible and more interesting.Starting with a single unifying thread that winds through the entire book (various* translations of a single 28-line poem by the French author Clement Marot), Hofstadter weaves a fascinating tapestry about the challenges facing a translator. There is a whole chapter dedicated to translations of Eugene Onegin; another discusses various efforts at translating Dante. Along the way there are fun digressions about such challenges as translating lipograms (text written with the constraint that one or more letters of the alphabet are never used), the paradoxical usefulness of writing under constraints of various kinds, be they artificial as in lipogrammatic writing, or metrical constraints, as in Pushkin, Dante, or the sonnets of Shakespeare, difficulties in writing translation software, linguistic issues such as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis**, how one would translate a 'dirty' joke to a clean version, while preserving the humor.*: I haven't counted, but there must be at least 50 different translations. Oddly enough, the accumulation of so many is not boring, but fascinating - Hofstadter's boyish enthusiasm helps to charm.**: (very) roughly, the linguistic notion that how we think is constrained by language. Dismissed by Steven Pinker in his book "The Language Instinct", though I think Pinker's case is less than convincing.A fascinating tour-de-force, it is also the kind of book one can dip in to from time to time and be entertained by any one of its chapters. In fact, this is probably the best way to approach this book - Hofstadter does meander at times, and has never met an interesting digression he doesn't like, so reading it all the way through might be fairly tough going.

As one whose initial exposure to Hofstadter was through GEB, I was somewhat skeptical about a book written by him focusing on poetry. Now, however, I would say that this book is even better than GEB. While the many different manifestations of Marot's poem get a bit tedious after a while, the chapters by Hofstadter in between are priceless. The analysis of the difficulties of translating something while being consistent to its essence and thoughts on how meaning crosses over from one medium to the next provide tremendous insight as to what thinking and feeling as a human being are all about. Additionally, the book also introduces us to Hofstadter the person, with personal details that make the book more insightful and touching to the soul. Anyone who has given serious thought to the issues addressed in this book will come away enlightened, and anyone with emotional depth will come away moved.

Really interesting book about translation

Sometimes a bit long winded in a few chapters going over the same point. concept very interesting.

This is a great book and one of my favorites. It is a delight to share Douglas'Hofstadder's thoughts.
