Jennifer Gaudiani is the authority on the medical complications of eating disorders. Not only is Sick Enough beautifully written in a compelling and thought-provoking way, but it also explains every symptom that someone with an eating disorder is experiencing, with all of the scientific information to back it up. I believe that this revolutionary book is not only an asset but an imperative for all health professionals.
As a psychotherapist that treats eating disorders, this book fills a huge gap of what has been missing in my years of training. Dr. Gaudiani does a great job at explaining the disorders in a way that not only helps professionals, but clients and loved ones as well. She is able to break down many of the medical aspects of the illness into ways that those of us that aren't MDs can understand, such as lab values, vital signs, etc. Information in this book has been especially helpful for parents of teens that are struggling with eating disorders, or determining whether they are "sick enough" to warrant treatment for the eating disorder/disordered eating.
As a sufferer of anorexia purge type for 35 years and still seeking solace despite treatment i am comforted by this non therapy fact based book. I have hope as one who is treated respectfully with true knowledge and facts I can use this in my recovery process. Dr. G writes with kindness and understanding and is inspiring. I beg every doctor to put this book on a required reading list.
