G. J. Meyer is the author of three popular histories: A World Undone: The Story of the Great War; The Tudors: The Complete Story of England’s Most Notorious Dynasty; and The Borgias: The Hidden History. Meyer received a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism from Harvard University. He earned an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and has taught writing and literature at colleges in Des Moines, St. Louis, and New York. He now lives in Wiltshire, England.

I've read several hundred books on WW1. I was surprised-- maybe shocked-- by how much "new" stuff I got from this book.Especially when you consider it's not particularly large.For a one-volume "general history" of the ENTIRE war, it contains a remarkable amount of interesting and intriguing facts, mostly put in context with interesting stories.It's a great read, and, if a person wanted to keep JUST ONE book on WW1, this would be my recommendation.

This is, without doubt, the best history book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. Meyer has managed to be highly readable and informativeat the same time. I had no insight into WWI at all, and now I'm tempted to re-read this 700 page book immediately because I couldn't put it down the first time. He doesn't just hit the reader with names, places, statistics and endless war logistics and battles. It's all there, but in context, as he intersperses "background" chapters between telling of the progress of the war itself. Please Mr. Meyer, write another book about the time between the two great wars!

This book is part of the pile I’m wading through to research a new story idea. I know I want to set it in England sometime between the end of the first world war and just after the second, but I don’t know exactly when. So, I figured I’d start with the first world war and work my way forward. This book is an excellent overview of the whole thing. The war is such a massive topic that it is almost impossible to cover everything, but this succeeds for the most part. Meyer covers everything in chronological order, so you get a feel for what was happening everywhere at any given time. He also includes small sections of historical background between each chapter the provides valuable insight into things like the history of the Balkans, the Junckers, and the Hohenzollerns. The only area that I thought was a little lacking were details on the war in Italy, but that is a minor quibble. It’s quite long, and really gives you the sense of the kind of meatgrinder the war was. I highly recommend it for anyone new to the topic.

Thinking about the First World War centennial, I picked up “A World Undone,” G. J. Meyer’s fairly recent (2006) and highly detailed account of the conflict. I don’t have the credentials to evaluate the quality of the scholarship, but the lengthy book certainly conveys the scale of the calamity and the scope of the human suffering it caused.And yet the war was almost an accident—petty conflicts and diplomatic miscommunications sparking mechanized slaughter on a scale unforeseen even by the generals and politicians so ineptly managing it. Even more sobering, the 1918 Armistice and subsequent Treaty of Versailles did little more than set the stage for World War II.“A World Undone” conveys all of this with different degrees of success, sometimes overwhelming readers with battlefield strategies and sometimes moving them to feel what modern war was like for soldiers and civilians alike. As it should be, “A World Undone” is profoundly unsettling, maybe especially for readers who think we live in the worst of times today.

Not much new here but a good general overview of WWI. An excellent book on the causes is Clark's "The Sleepwalkers". Meyer overlooks the fact that France had loaned Russia enormous sums prior to the outbreak of war with the particular aim of tying the Russians to France in an alliance against Germany. Meyer's pretty good on the dynamics of Britain's involvement, the Home Rule issue and Grey's essentially duplicitous nature. He's better on Wilson's actions in getting America involved. Simply put, the US had loaned Britain and France so much money by the third year of the war that the Americans couldn't afford to let them lose. The more history I read and the older I get the more I realize that if you can follow the money trail you can generally figure out why things happen. Well written, easy to read. Good introduction for someone new to this subject.

Never before have I read a book with so much information presented in such a logical, easily digestible way. Like many "history buffs" I know plenty about World War II but much less about the war twenty years prior that caused it. This book changed that. What I like most are the background sections on the key players interspersed throughout the book - such a unique but great method to keep the reader learning without bogging down the narrative. If the book started with all of that background, I am sure many readers would get dissuaded from finishing it because it's not quite as interesting as the war itself. Once you're invested in the story of the war, however, the background on the key players is fascinating. Highly recommended.

World War 1 has always held a special fascination for me.for one thing Americans care to know little about it because American troops didn't get into the combat until the last 6 months or so of the war. Also, it was an era before TV and radio. I suspect even Americans living at that time must have understood little about it as well. Yet, it was the conflict that set in motion all the other conflicts of our time. It's causes were more interesting that those of the Second World War. In the latter war, it was an open and shut case of Hitler wanting war at a time when no one else in Europe did. On the contrary, historians of the First World War are not in agreement on its causes or even who or which nation is primarily to blame for it. The battles of the First World War were slaughter fests over blasted, moonscaped earth conjuring up images of Armageddon. GJ Meyer does a terrific job in answering all the big questions and leaves no major topic neglected. Essential reading for everyone wanting to know how the present came to be.

I am a big fan of this author's book "Walking Brooklyn" (also 30 walks) and I went through two copies as well as ordered it for the Kindle. I think I went on at least 27 of the 30 walks in it. I found her navigation directions easy to follow (unlike "Walking Chicago," by another author), as well as informative, and not overly directive. By "not overly directive" I mean that she never wrote anything like "veer from this route and you die." If I recall correctly I think she also suggested not limiting yourself? (Note however that in both the Brooklyn and Queens books there is an upfront note advising you to be careful, author and publisher have done all they can, but are not liable, don't be stupid, etc.)Today I took my first walk using this book. I chose one of the Astoria walks, because I lived in Astoria for 6-7 years (20 years ago), and I figured that with a walk through a neighborhood I was at least semi-familiar with, I could decently judge whether she was bringing in both the "must includes" as well as other sites, and being informative as she did so.On the walk I took she hit it out of the park. It took me past the churches I expected, the huge pool in Astoria Park, and the Socrates Sculpture Garden. Along the way she pointed out former mansions I'd encountered on other walks with friends, churches I'd never given a second's thought to, and was just as informative about sites along the way as I'd seen in her Brooklyn book.She also, interestingly, made no mention of some adjoining blocks which have been deliberately given over to graffiti, the Welling Court Mural Project (on more streets than just Welling Court). I figure her silence can possibly be explained by each of these: 1) she doesn't need to point out something so visible, and may be leaving it as a surprise; 2) if it's like the former project 5 Pointz in Long Island City, you can't guarantee its permanence and so unlike a city park you shouldn't promise it being there. I knew I would be nearby, so I was alert; but I can't imagine anyone needing it pointed out to them.And, another plus, she mentions places to stop for a bit of refreshment along the way.I was very pleased with this walk. And based on her Brooklyn book, as well as this walk, I'm very much looking forward to the other 29 in this book.Update, March 13 2016. I have now been on several of the walks in this book, and while I continue to feel this book is every bit as good as her Brooklyn book and still deserves the five stars I've given it, I feel it's important to point out that Queens and Brooklyn are very different boroughs, and content of the walks are dramatically different. It's my sense that the Queens book tilts heavily on the residential aspects of the neighborhoods, while the Brooklyn neighborhoods often have a more industrial history to them. Regarding the Queens book itself, Onofri does a great job of laying out the neighborhoods' residential characteristics and histories and anecdotes of the churches and synagogues; but there are points where the inclusion of, say, a 9/11 memorial seems forced and the memorial itself not particularly overwhelming or worth crossing the street for. Your mileage may vary.

Queens is something of a forgotten borough, at least where tourists are concerned. Most tourists spend most or all of their time in Manhattan, and for good reason. Those tourists who are intrepid enough to venture outside that island, usually seem to walk the Brooklyn Bridge to that borough, and nothing else. Brooklyn has some utterly gorgeous neighborhoods, and for those who have seen a lot of Manhattan, the same author's book Walking Brooklyn is recommended. But few people, even New Yorkers, know just how much there is to see in Queens, and this excellent book goes a long way in rectifying this misconception. This book serves New Yorkers just as well as out-of-towners; and for everybody, walking in all sections of New York City is highly recommended. New York is the safest large city in the country. Each of the 30 walking tours described here has a lot of interest. The sites and sights mentioned range from interesting old neighborhoods to spectacular views of Manhattan's iconic skyline, from Hindu and Sikh temples to beautiful parks, from beachside boardwalks to stirring war memorials, from whimsical Victorian dwellings to surviving Colonial houses, from forgotten seafront "villages" to lovely nature trails. A large number of architectural wonders are thoroughly described. Each walk is about 3-4 miles (5-6 km) long. By the way, it is to be hoped that a similar book, preferably by the same author, will be released about walking in the Bronx, an even less-known but equally interesting area to explore. If a small gripe may be added, the descriptions of buildings do not always include the year of construction. Therefore, while it is strongly recommended to buy this book, it should best be used in conjunction with the equally superb architectural guide, AIA Guide to New York City.

I almost didn't purchase this book. I already speak English, what's to learn? Glancing at a few pages inside changed my mind. It's not enough to just speak English, it's more complicated than that. It pays to study the use of Irish English, as well as culture, before traveling there. People are the same the world over; courtesy and respect plus an effort to learn their ways are appreciated. They often use English in ways we do not. Otherwise you may live up to the stereotype of the intrusive and obnoxious American traveler!

This little book is an enjoyable and quick guide to traveling in Ireland. It is well-written and touches briefly on most every subject you will come across. Use it as a starting point to get you excited about your trip.

The New Arab Wars outlines the regional conflicts in the Middle East and the political and ideological factors involved. This book is effectively a political science book that can get the casual reader much more versed into the differences between the countries and the interest of regional powers in any given country. To get an understanding of what is going on in Syria, Libya with ISIS, Yemen, Egypt, etc... this book is a must read and can give a deeper insight into what various interests and why are driving the conflicts rather than the good and evil narratives that come through with too great abundance through the 24 hour news service.The New Arab Wars discusses recent events in the middle east focusing on Syria, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain and Tunisia. Despite most headlines trumpeting ideological reasons for who should be in charge the author discusses which regional powers have direct interests and spheres of influence concerns in the various countries. In particular in the Middle East there are those fearful of the rise of Iran and its sphere of influence, Saudi Arabia with the UAE and Qatar as an opposing interest in favor of the Muslim brotherhood. Due to the competing interests both political and ideological there is an abundance of spin that comes out of the news trying to gather support. Furthermore the willingness to finance groups who would further certain groups political goals has led to a massive proxy war in the region as arms have been fed into tribal and ideologically driven groups for often quite shallow reasons. The US has been far less willing to fund and expand their war effort so much of the conflict is due to the escalating proxy war of regional powers with deep pockets. It is tragic as the human side of the equation is what is suffering the most by far.The New Arab Wars gives a window into the political science of the conflicts in the Middle East. The author discusses how the promotion of democracy as an ideal that is pushed by the US cannot be taken at face value as Bahrain had the support of the US in using force to suppress civil unrest but elsewhere did not due to the closer relationship of the US with Bahrain. Furthermore the fall of the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt whose election was a manifestation of a move toward democracy was a tragic step back for the country that should have been stabilized by the US. There is an inherent conflict of interest in the power struggle in the Middle East. The allies of the US are not democratic so the idea that for current events the US will put ideology above regional relationships is flawed. The balance of power is the center of concern in the region and sectarian conflict the norm. Democracy leads to majoritarian outcomes which are destabilizing and the regional conflicts are real between Saudi, Iraq, Iran and Qatar. The conflict and proxy war that is being fought in Syria was inevitable given the intrinsic interests known ex-ante and though there are very obvious moral dimensions to the conflict there are many issues under the hood if one looks at the regions history and associated parties. Very informative and timely.

Marc Lynch (aka blogger "Abu Aardvark") wrote the best account of the Arab Spring uprisings in his 2012 The Arab Uprising: The Unfinished Revolutions of the New Middle East. This follow-up account does a masterful job of placing those uprisings in context. It is well-written, easily accessible, and compact account of the unraveling of the regional order in the Arab World by one of today's top experts on the region. Lynch's greatest strength is in succinctly detailing the multiple forces driving events, illustrating the complexity of the problem without getting bogged down in tangents or excess detail.Lynch draws a direct line from the crushing Arab autocracies of the 1990s and early 2000s to today's terror and civil war. Lynch's account balances local conditions and regional order, detailing how the U.S. "War on Terror" increased local despots' freedom to crush their own populations. He draws on his own deep knowledge of Arab-language media sources to support his claim that the erosion of U.S. leverage in the region is the product of the invasion of Iraq and close ties to dictators, rather than policy missteps by President Obama. Not all readers will agree with Lynch's argument, but his book makes a powerful contribution to the policy discussion.

Any person who believes in making a positive difference, and who also realizes the extent to which effective implementation will make or break the success of an effort, would appreciate Professor Lynch's thoughtful review of the Arab Spring to-date.While I was attracted to this book because I wanted a guide to the modern Middle East, I would recommended it to anyone who wants to take a serious role in a cross-sector organization, as a strategist, as a practitioner, or as a political leader. You probably need at least some basic context of the Middle East to fully appreciate the book – but you don't need too much at all!Thank you Professor Lynch for such an incredible contribution, and for making those of us who are practitioners more effective at what we do.PS. As a follow up, I can't help but wonder whether "we" (the U.S., U.S. universities, and ideally others – my "we" is loosely defined) could offer free modules on governance and government institutions to anyone with a refugee status. Probably shorter than a masters degree but longer than a summer. And probably residential programs. High-quality programming in this area – obviously with the right people in place to ensure access to the program – could begin to build the leadership skillsets of those who have been impacted by the suffering that Professor Lynch's book details so vividly.

I'm a retired university professor who taught logistics for 42 years at a large state university. I am now 73. During the last 15 years, as my career wound down and I then retired, I started to take myself less seriously and have become a voracious reader of novels. I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of books dealing with murders, thrillers, espionage, court room drama, etc. My favorite authors of this genre are David Baldacci, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Tom Clancy, Laurie King and Ken Follett. I believe that James Tucker's, NEXT OF KIN, compares very favorably to the novels of my favorite writers. I finished this book yesterday, and I am recommending it to all my friends who enjoy this type of entertainment. I look forward to the sequel of this book (I hope there is a sequel) to find out more about Ben.

The action-oriented plot and intriguing character development will keep you turning the pages. Next of Kin is a murder mystery threaded through multi-generational family histories with a terrific sense of place for New York scenes ranging from an Adirondack Camp and the streets of Manhattan. Art as a metaphor for wealth, power and privilege plays an important role in the plot and the author's diligent research makes this an engaging element of the story. Small details like lingering scents and the movement of air make for not only interesting clues along the way but also interesting character development devices that connect you the protagonists.The ending is particularly strong and will leave you wanting more of Buddy, Ben and Mei. It's easy to envision the building blocks for a successful new series with these characters.A great read for a long flight or sitting on the beach, pure brain candy, enjoy!

I liked the characters even the bad guy. They all had personality and color. The story was also good.What I didn't like was the tedious descriptions of what people wore, the area, where they lived. It just went on and on, so much so that I skipped pages and pages just to keep the story going.Then death nil, no ending. Don't bother with this one if like things to be wrapped up at the end.

Ten-year-old Ben Brook is the only survivor after his parents and sister are brutally murdered. It looks like the killer might target other members of the wealthy Brook family clan so detective Buddy Lock is tasked with solving the killings and protecting Ben. Buddy soon discovers the Brook family might have wealth and privilege but they also are harboring dark secrets.The story got off to a good start with a poor boy narrowly escaping death but unfortunately it was all downhill from there. There were just too many times where it felt unrealistic and ridiculous. The writing particularly when describing noises or during what are supposed to be tense action scenes was weak. (Chapter 10's last paragraph is an example of the type of scene you would expect in a terrible horror movie.) The one positive thing I can say about this book is there was one twist I didn't see coming but even that was so far-fetched. I enjoy most books I read, but I just did not connect with this book at all.I won a free ebook in a giveaway but was under no obligation to post a review. All views expressed are my honest opinions.

This was an interesting and exciting read. I really liked the background on the pillagng of Jews by the Hitler Germans. We must never forget those events. The way it tied into this story was very informative. I wasn't completely satisfied with the end but know it will be "fleshed" out n the next book by Tucker with Buddy. I loved the bravery and intelligence of Ben as our 10-year old granddaughter exhibits the same sort of smarts paired with common sense. Looking forward to the next installment this Fall!

I usually have an inkling by 3/4 through a book as to the identity of the “bad guy,” but this fast-paced serial-killer mystery had me baffled until the last few chapters.Someone has targeted members of the powerful Brooks families who have wealth, status, fabulous homes with good security, and art worth millions of dollars. It’s not only a question of who the murderer is but why this extended family is being targeted. NYPD homicide detective Buddy Lock must find the killer, who is determined to wipe out the entire extended Brooks family, including a ten year-old boy who barely managed to survive the initial slaughter of his nuclear family. If you enjoy reading mystery thrillers, I highly recommend this book.

I won a e-book version of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. On New Year's Eve members of the Brooks family are at their vacation home. One of the Brooks brothers, his wife, and daughter are murdered. The only survivor is their ten year old son. The murderer then targets the ten year old survivor, the remaining Brooks brothers and their families. Secrets come out about the family and artwork stolen during World War II. Was surprised when I found out the identity of the murderer. Very fast paced and well written story. I look forward to reading many more books by this author!

Riveting, I could not put this book down. It moved at a good pace from one atrocity to another in this thriller. The sins of the fathers who became wealthy by stealing and killing the Jews will come back to enact vengeance upon future generations. He kills with a hatchet then leaves his victims chopped in mutilated lumps and you'll never know who the killer is until the very end. Looking forward to what this author has to offer in the future.
