About the Author

R. A. MONTGOMERY attended Hopkins Grammar School, Williston-Northampton School and Williams College where he graduated in 1958. He pursued graduate studies in Religion and Economics at Yale and NYU. Montgomery was an adventurer all his life, climbing mountains in the Himalaya, skiing throughout Europe and scuba-diving wherever he could. His interested included education, macro-economics, geo-politics, mythology, history, mystery novels and music. He wrote his first interactive book, Journey Under the Sea, in 1976 and published it under the series name The Adventures of You. A few years later Bantam Books bought this book and gave Montgomery a contract for five more, to inaugurate their new children s publishing division. Bantam renamed the series Choose Your Own Adventure and a publishing phenomenon was born. The series has sold more than 260 million copies in over 40 languages. He was married to the writer Shannon Gilligan. Montgomery died in November 2014, only two months after his last book was published.

That kind of sounds like a bad thing but in fact that means much of the book is focused on longer, more detailed, if fewer stories. So that makes replay a lot more fun because the stories are alot different from each other. Also, the book feels like hard sci-fi, which I enjoy. The artwork is also pretty good and the characters feel realistic. They even give the characters a kind of background before thrusting you into the plot and they also have a history of the colony that could help you decide on what choices to select. Great book, get used or new!

My 4th grade boys now love to read because of choose your own adventure books!

I bought this book for myself. When I was a kid I liked a lot to read this books and I found many titles of choose your own adventure on amazon. The different histories in the book make this one a great lecture to spend the time.

Who says you need electronics for something to be interactive? This is so much fun; choosing which way the story should go. You can read it again and again and have ad different outcome each time. This is great for kids or the kid at heart.

This book has many sides of classic comic books science fiction and alien abduction stories. Well thought out and clever.

The story would be amazing if it hadn't been so long. It is very good as a story, but sometimes it gets too boring.

I bought this for my 7 year old nephew who doesn't like to read. This one about space travel is perfect for him and he loves reading it!

This book is capitalism at its worst. The story is a fanciful yarn stitched together with creative license, cobbled and hobbled together through second and third hand sources and interspersed with conjecture from the author.Save the time…. Skip the book…. Read the court transcript…..

Just google and you will find every word written here. The author has taken liberties to add his own thoughts/feelings into his own convoluted retelling of this tragedy. Appears written by an arrogant crime writer want to be. Save your money and send it to a battered woman and children’s center.

It had quite a bit of information and analysis of the tragic situation but seemed to be rushed (it was just a couple months ago). I would have like to have seen a little more info on their backgrounds - but I’m sure that will cone out.

This is pretty badly written. It’s probably too much to ask for a book on a compelling true crime case months after it happens. This has nothing new in it, and loads of grammatical mistakes as well. Pass.

The book was so so reading. Unfortunately I feel it was written to soon. There are no new facts and the ones given in the book were only the same old ones given in the newspapers or on the news station. Perhaps he could wait, research a little more in depth and put out another book on this horrible crime.

I've been reading Nick's (and his collaborator's) books for several years and am currently reading the first book on the Watts case. I really like how Nick incorporates weblinks into the narrative and also enjoy his unique, up close and personal, viewpoints.

I am not sure how correct all of the material is within there but the book was interesting. The crime just happened and I am sure that the court will uncover much more information. This book help makes sense of the information currently available.

Pretty good but the volume #3 is boring and not really relevant.

Having traveled through much of the southwest, I found this book lacking in actual locations I would recommend a person to go. If you're immensely boring and very wealthy, you should get this book and take a few trips it highlights. Four stars because the book itself is pretty and the design is impeccable.

Nice guide for the areas-not as detailed as specific city’s, but local input is invaluable.Easy and quick.

The Desert Southwest is my favorite area in the US. I have many emotional experiences there from childhood to adulthood, so it takes a special book about this special place to impress me. This field guide is the best modern-day field guide I've read, and it captures the essence of the Southwest through narratives and essays, not laundry lists. I love this book.

Paying for It by Chester Brown is an autobiographical graphic novel that relates Mr. Brown's sex life from 1996 to 2010, which consists of his using professional female escorts for his heterosexual encounters. He mentions using masturbation to cool his ardor prior to these encounters, but provides no further details. To protect the women he changes their names and doesn't provide locations or identifying features. For those of us not familiar with sex workers or their customers, this is a chance to get a glimpse into the workings of this trade.Brown is dispassionate but clearly happy with his decision to outsource his sexual needs, feeling that sex and girlfriends do not go together well for him. The text alternates visits to various escorts with discussions with his male friends and ex-girlfriends about the advantages of his chosen sexual lifestyle. He is well-read on the politics of sex workers and takes a Libertarian position condemning the present laws restricting or outlawing sex work.The body of the book is preceded by an Introduction by Robert Crumb who calls it Mr. Brown's best work. At the end of the book there are 50 pages of Appendices and Notes that go into much deeper detail than the narrative of the book permitted. I would say that he makes as good an argument for unregulated prostitution as you will find in the popular literature.

Meet Chester Brown, a cartoonist whose girlfriend just broke up with him for another man that may or may not even be interested in her. It's at this point in his life that Brown no longer looks for "romantic love" but instead turns to prostitutes. It must be noted that when this book was written, prostitution was semi-legal in Canada. That is, as long as you didn't solicit in public or operate out of a brothel, prostitution was tolerated. A popular concept was the "outcall" where you can call an agency and have an escort show up to your room. However, we soon discover that Chester couldn't afford the girl AND the room, so he usually went for incalls, which means he went to the prostitute. (Canada has recently changed their policy on prostitution. It is legal to sell sex, but illegal to buy it.)The illustrations are unique in that Brown attempts to draw the women as they were in actuality (breast size, body type, etc.) and I found it amusing that he changed the prostitutes names even though they were fake names to begin with. Although I see why he did it - to protect their identities from anyone who may be reading the book. A lot of common scams with prostitution are depicted in the cartoons, such as the "bait and switch", which is when a girl uses a fake/outdated picture or inaccurately describes herself over the phone and then shows up at your door.Overall, it was a quick read. I found myself agreeing with most of his philosophies during the actual illustrated portion of the book, but in the appendix of the book he uses a lot of far-fetched examples (homosexual relationships, the possibility of a "gay gene", futuristic sex in 2080, etc) to get his point across. If you're interested in the sex for money business I'd give this book a look.

It's very hard to decide how many stars to rate this book, and I'm not surprised to see the customer comments all over the map. First of all, it's unusual in that it's a graphic memoir (or a "comic strip memoir" as the author prefers to call it) a relatively rare genre. Second, and more importantly, it's a book about a man who satisfies his sex drive with prostitutes, does it unapologetically--in fact you might say proudly, and chronicles his experiences with one hooker after another for several years. Third, he draws pictures of these encounters--not at all erotic by the way--and goes on in some detail as to why he prefers cash on the line encounters to romantic love. The graphic part of the book is compelling--a very fast and engaging read since we very rarely if ever hear from men about their experiences paying for sex (except, as I now know from reading this book, on sexually explicit websites reviewing hookers in various regions.) The last fifty pages of the book is a long afterword, somewhat repetitive and tedious rant why prostitution should be legalized (not merely decriminalized, but in fact treated as virtually any other employment for pay.)The author has very little emotional affect--one of his closest friends, who is a character in the comic strip, writes in the afterword "The truth is, Chester seems to have a very limited emotional range compared to most people. There does seem to be something wrong with him. He's definitely an oddball. That said, he is also the kindest, gentlest and most deeply thoughtful oddball I know." I love the simple style of Brown's illustrations and the point of view that he uses to approach the world. I’ve never made it a secret how much a love a good hockey story. So when I discovered a new YA Contemporary series that centered around a hockey town I knew I had to check it out. And I am so glad that I did, because this book is so good!Off the Ice takes place in Juniper Falls, a small town in Minnesota that lives and breathes pretty much nothing but hockey. The high school hockey team is basically royalty, and a lot of the boys act like. But then there are others, like Tate Tanley. Tate is different. He’s sweet and caring and not out to hook up with as many girls as he can possibly get. And when he sees Claire O’Connor he can’t help but be just a little taken by his sisters best friend.I really loved Tate’s character. He’s a good kid, but troubled and hiding some dark secrets. For the longest time he had no one to talk to about any of the things that were happening in his life, until he developed a relationship with Claire. In Claire he finds someone he can trust and with whom he can discuss the demons that keep him from completely enjoying his life and hockey. Plus, he’s just a really stand up guy!And Claire! Claire has seen her entire life turned upside down over the past year. Her fathers diagnosis of a brain tumor has caused her to take a semester off of school, and she begins to question everything in her life. She’s burdened with an incredible amount of guilt because she feels she was off having a good time at college while her father was suffering. Tate helps her to find herself and deal with all of her issues and it’s incredible how strong their relationship is.This story was just so good! Julie Cross has created a wonderful world in this small little hockey town, and I loved getting to know both Tate and Claire, plus all their friends. Off the Ice had everything I loved in a great YA Contemporary. Love, drama, fun characters, and a quirky little town. It was perfect! If you love ya books that center around sports teams this book is definitely for you!

I’ve been looking forward to this book for a long time! Ever since I first learned of Julie writing it and reading a very early first couple chapters…I just knew it was going to be something special. Having read it now, I was right. Off the Ice, the first book in Julie Cross’ Juniper Falls series, is a spectacular book with a gripping story line and captivating characters. This book could easily be described as having a Friday Night Lights feel, so if you’re a fan of the show, I think it would be safe to say that you would enjoy this book.The start of the book starts off with a bit of drama, but is the foundation for the rest of the story. In a town where high school hockey is the sole focus and the main event each week, Tate Tanley finds himself in the shadow of his dad, whom the town loves and adores. Little do they know who he really is – the side that Tate sees. However, there is one other person who knows just how Tate’s dad treats him and that’s Claire O’Connor, the girl whom Tate has had a crush on for a long time. Certain circumstances bring them together unexpectedly, but just for one night. Fast forward a year, and things have changed for both of them, but not for the better – or is it? I guess it all depends on how you look at it.In a book filled with hardships, discovering who you are outside of the spotlight and perhaps even finding your spotlight once again, Tate and Claire are two characters who find shelter in each other. But it isn’t without its trials and tribulations.It may be safe for me to say that aside from the unique storyline, the characters are my favorite part of Off the Ice. I find them individually inspiring and developed in a way that makes them work perfectly together on the page. The hardships that they each go through, don’t overshadow one another, which I thought was important. Everything about the story seemed well thought out and strategically pieced together. Of course, the aspect of it having a sports background didn’t hurt! I love a good book that has sports as a focus and hockey isn’t one that I feel is overdone. In fact, I haven’t really seen any other YA/NA books that have hockey in it. But maybe that’s just me!If you’re looking for an author to get hooked on, then check out Julie Cross. She has yet to write a book that I haven’t been able to put down and at this point…having read many (if not all) of her books, I doubt she ever will. 🙂 She’s earned a spot at the top of my favorite author list and even has her own shelf on my bookcase. (Yay, Julie!)

Eustáquio Afonso Araújo, DDS, MDS, is the Pete Sotiropoulos Endowed Professor of Orthodontics, Clinic Director of Orthodontics, and Associate Executive Director at the Center for Advanced Dental Education at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri. Dr. Araújo is also Adjunct Visiting Professor at Kunghee University in Seoul, South Korea and at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He is a Diplomate of  both the American and the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics. For the past 35 years Dr. Araujo has dedicated his life to academics and the practice of the specialty.Peter H. Buschang, MA, PhD, is a Regents Professor, the Peter H. Buschang Endowed Professor of Orthodontics, and the director of research in the Department of Orthodontics at the Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. He has been teaching craniofacial growth, development adaptations to orthodontic and surgical treatments, and research design & methodology to graduate students and residents for more than 30 years. Dr. Buschang has mentored more than 150 MS and PhD students, has published more than 270 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has also given numerous invited lectures and continuing education courses. This book is clinically oriented and also evidence based. Among various merits of this book, I really like lots of patient pictures and visually pleasing 3D rendered illustrations. Most of cases were followed up for long term and amazingly, some had 10~20 years of follow-up pictures. There are so many things I learn from this book (I haven't finished yet). Habit breaking chapter talked in detail about very practical and creative approach (The Araujo approach). I think this information will be also helpful in practice management as well as patient's well being.

Similarly, there is not much hint as to how many of the brokers and middlemen were ultimately successful-and how many died with a garage full of their brother-in-law’s still life painting.=== Summary ===The book was a great look at the role of middlemen in the fine arts marketplace. There is no question that they influenced it greatly, and probably were responsible for developing the careers of many of the great artists. We see the brokers at their altruistic best and their conniving worst-often at the same time.
