Thank you so much Brian, this book made my life easier. I was dubious about buying a book to explain how to use GIMP as I am a more visual person when it comes to learning things. However, when I watched some of the YouTube videos out there they went through things so fast I would miss a step and just get frustrated. Not with this book it made creating my own book covers easier and dare I say it more FUN. I had downloaded GIMP awhile ago but had no idea how to use it. I almost never leave reviews but I had to for this one because it simplified the process for me. He is thorough with each step without being condescending. I was able to make a nice book cover within a couple of hours, considering I had to stop and start with the kids in the background that is no small accomplishment. Again, thank you.

This book gives great pointers on creating your own book covers, sizing, placement of objects, and other great tips. The best part, though, was the information on the powerful, FREE software you can download and install on your computer for use in the creation of said book covers. He also provides information on how to use the basic and necessary features of the program and where to get more information (the User's Guide) for other, less used features, but ones that come in handy.

Do It Yourself Book Covers is well written in an easy-to-follow style. Links to cover examples are very helpful. GIMP is not an easy program for the graphically-challenged, Brian has smoothed out a lot of the bumps. The only glitch I found was that the URL to the GIMP Users Guide did not work. This may be due to an address changes since the book's publication.

If you want to get the full benefit of this book, do as the author suggests and go step by step. Otherwise, if you are not computer literate, you may find yourself saying, "huh?" I am happy to have it in my library of reference material.

For a first time eBook author, I found this quite helpful. It answers many of the questions that a typical new author has about developing a book cover.

Great information that will save you money. Designing covers that you can be proud of and satisfied with.

The book made it easy to change my book cover, but the kindle program needs work. I could not access all of the colors I needed. I spoke to other Kindle authors and got the same response. The book is good the program is so-so.

Brian Jackson succeeds where many others fail: He has successfully written a guide to making your own book covers. The main star of this process is the free GIMP program, to which Mr. Jackson gives full credit and then explains straightforwardly how to manipulate. Several examples are used, step-by-step, to familiarize the reader with the key tricks needed to make a useful book cover and leaves out the stuff that performs other tasks. In other words, you won't need to read a whole darn book about photo-manipulation programs, while trying hopefully to discover which bits you might put to use. I even learned what "paths" are for! Finally! And, Thanks! I used this guide to make my own book cover.

Eight Chanukah Tales, by Nissan Mindel

Review

This collection of eight inspiring Chanukah stories takes us on a journey in time and space, from Spain under the Spanish inquisition to a small village in Hungary under the Nazi occupation; from the Gestapo headquarters in Brussels, Belgium to a palace overlooking the Guadalquivir River; from Crohnheim, Germany during the time of the crusades, to Jerusalem during the time of Judah the Maccabee; from an American Army camp in Germany toward the end of World War II to an American Jewish home at the end of the twentieth century. Each of the eight stories in this delightful volume celebrates a victory of the spirit. On each page we encounter individuals who exemplify the ideals for which the Maccabees so bravely fought.I was awed by the sheer guts of Reb Shmelke, the beloved rabbi of Zavolov, who entertains a group of Nazi soldiers to save his community from certain death. I was inspired by the aristocratic widow, Donna Rachela del Modiglia, who, spurned by Queen Isabelle, succeeds in bringing her family to safety under the very nose the chief inquisitor, Thomas de Torquemada and his fanatical monks.Eight Chanukah Tales is packed with adventure. Will Fernandez the monk turn his back on everything he was taught to save his sister from being burned at the stake? Will Red Jonathan, the apostate, succeed with his nefarious plan?I met brave young girls, such as quiet and reserved Fay who saves the Belgian underground and three young Jewish children from the Gestapo; and little Miriam who unites her family with her desire to light the Chanukah menorah. The story of Chanukah came to life as I read about Obadia`s father, who spurned the Hellenists to join the Maccabees. Just as the Jews of old cleaned the Holy Temple in Jerusalem of pagan idols, the soldiers of the Ninth platoon clean a Jewish synagogue in Germany that the Nazis had turned into a stable. The late Nissan Mindel, editor of Talks and Tales for forty eight years, authored dozens of books, many which have become modern-day classics. The stories in Eight Chanukah Tales are being published for the first time in illustrated book form.Eight Chanukah Tales is sure to become an all-time favorite and is the perfect Chanukah gift to give to the young and to the young at heart --Reviewed by Debbie ShapiroBrings to life the power of Jewish faith and self-sacrifice in an easily digestible format for young readers. --Dovid Zaklikowski, Chabad.org

#18 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Let’s get this issue out of the way right now, at the beginning: I loathed Outlander, and could not make it through more than 100 pages even after two separate attempts. So comparisons of this book with Outlander is a definite negative to me. I also thought it was interesting that a couple of reviewers very familiar with Outlander pointed out the suspiciously obvious "borrowings" from what Claire did by Anne Gallagher in this book.I read a great deal of historical fiction, enough to recognize good research, the author’s immersion in the daily fabric of the particular period, his or her faithfulness to the political, social, economic, and religious attitudes of the day, and the assiduous avoidance of anachronisms. So when historical novels are done well, they are mesmerizing—and informative. What the Wind Knows is not historical fiction, alas, but a historical romance using the 1921 uprisings in Ireland as a backdrop, and a heavy-handed time-travel trope to get the female protagonist from her 21st century NYC milieu to the required Irish setting so she can act out a rather convoluted and often unbelievable relationship that was apparently crucial to her dying grandfather. Thus the history took a backseat to “Love is the Answer,” although plenty of Yeats quotes were scattered about like birdseed in an attempt to make this tale appear to be on a higher level. I was not misled, however.I will say that most of the details of the uprisings were accurate, as were descriptions of the various Irish locales. Those details, unfortunately, were shoehorned in, dumped, and stuffed often without appearing natural and usually disrupting the plot’s forward motion. There was a nice mix of historical figures moving briefly through the pages with the fictional ones, for the most part seamlessly. Many reviewers have practically swooned over the quality of the writing, bestowing all sorts of adjectives on the prose, of which “beautiful” seems to be the most prominent. I agree that occasionally the prose is original, striking, and imaginative. For the most part, however, I thought the author tried too hard to be both literary and unique, and as a result, the prose bordered on mauve, if not outright purple. Several times I felt the writing—and the story itself—was emotionally manipulative, reaching too hard and too far into the reader’s heartstrings to produce a reaction. While it apparently succeeded with the majority of reviewers here, I prefer to have a well-crafted novel produce whatever emotions I might feel when reading honestly, without guile or striving toward a particular goal. Thus all that romance, grief, mourning, fear, love, caring, angst, and everything else tossed at us from the Prologue to the end left me unmoved because of the obviousness of it all.I almost quit reading after the Prologue because of the already apparent overwriting. Anne and her dying grandfather talk endlessly to each other, but the dialogue tags are never the plain, unobtrusive “said,” letting the words and any action show us what is happening and how these two characters are feeling. No, we get literally one after the other ad infinitum “murmured,” “soothed,” “contended,” “confessed,” “proposed,” “pressed,” and so on. I stopped counting the times in the first chapter that Anne told her grandfather Eoin she didn’t know how she could go on without him, how many times they argued in oddly literary dialogue about going to Ireland, and why. In other words, the central themes that the wind allegedly knows everyone’s story since the beginning of time, the necessity of going to Ireland to right some sort of wrong, and repair an ancient relationship that was apparently doomed were discussed and dissected to death in less than 25 pages. I was bored with it all, which is not good at the beginning of a rather lengthy tale.Once again I’m in the minority, but then perhaps that is a result of my age, innate cynicism, demand for truth in advertising regarding books, and refusal to be manipulated by purple prose. On the other hand, I can easily see the reasons for all the praise.By the way, if you’re going to quote Yeats’s poetry at the beginning of your chapters, it is always a good idea to avoid obvious typos in those quotes.

5+++ Stars!!!!!This book has ruined me for all other books! I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened and my poor heart! How can it ache SO GOOD and SO BAD?! This was a beautiful story of love, loss, family and patriotism with one of the most unique storylines and had me feeling EVERYTHING!The concept of time travel has always fascinated me but it is certainly a difficult topic to get perfectly right, whether in movies or books. Many times there are inconsistencies and plot holes. Not in this book. Amy Harmon got it right. I mean she NAILED it! I honestly had no idea how perfect it was until the very end. The author carries us on a spectacular time travel journey filled with love and loss. It was like a puzzle that you were trying to solve piece by piece and the anticipation of seeing the whole picture will have you thoroughly enthralled. This book is very rich in history and our heroine Anne gets pulled back to Ireland in 1921 at the cusp of the Irish Civil War. First of all let me just say I am not a history buff. Before reading this book I certainly had no interest in what Ireland went through to gain her Independence. However, you cannot help but be fascinated with Amy's story telling. She weaves the tale of these heroic men and women who fought for Ireland's liberation from Great Britain and I could feel their pride and I wept for what it cost them to achieve their independence. As Anne learns firsthand about the country of her ancestors and lives the events that she only read about in "her time", you can't help but be caught up in the fascination of it all. The details in this book are phenomenal and you cannot help but respect the level of research that must have gone into the writing of this novel. The love Ann and Thomas discover in each other takes them both by surprise. Ann finds herself in love with a man in the past and is at war with what decisions to make. Their love was gradual but intense and passionate. Thomas was such a great man. He was a kind and generous soul but also smart and brave. He risked his life for his family and his country. He loved Anne with such fervor and their path was so gut wrenching but so beautiful! Their love story was simply epic! There were so many amazing characters in this book that each played their role in what unfolded in this story. Everything about this book was beautifully complex. It makes you realize we are a part of something so much bigger than ourselves. Time became irrelevant. Love became important. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time to come. I know it's only January but I know this will be one of my favorite reads of 2019. Well done Amy Harmon!

This was such a special read... so much more than an exquisite romance... Amy Harmon has weaved a tale intertwining past and present Ireland, mixing historical facts with ordinary people’s lives. It is also a love letter about her ancestors' homeland and the incredible bond of family through the ages.Thomas and Anne were clearly destined soulmates. The feelings they have for each other were utterly divine. ‘What the Wind Knows’ uses a mix of fictional characters and real historical figures, the reader is given a gripping glimpse of what it would have been like living in such severe times in Ireland in the early 1920’s.The core of the story is about Anne Gallagher who is unexpectedly given a chance to understand where she came from. Anne has found professional success and acclaim as an author, but her career has dominated her life for far too long. Suddenly however this strong and steady man in front of her is showing her the importance of family.Thomas is an amazing character, he is soulful and kind and his deep and abiding love for Anne is so passionate in his journal entries it was a delight to read. Together they made such a wonderful couple and I enjoyed getting to know them.‘What the Wind Knows’ is truly a gem of a book. It shows that love is timeless. It will make your heart want to explode. This story is beautiful, magical and it’s a wonderful experience. A definite must read!I am a verified purchaser in Australia

Kindergarten-Grade 3-A retelling of a Mopan Maya myth concerning the creation of the Milky Way. The moon, Luna, is felled from the sky by a chance shot from her grandfather's blowgun. She tumbles into the sea, breaking to pieces as she falls. Lost in the dark depths of the ocean, she manages to pull herself back together with a little help from her new friends, the fish. The descriptive writing imbues both Luna and the fish with character-spunky in the case of the moon and indelibly hopeful and cheerful in the instance of the fish-and gives the story enough drama to engage young readers and listeners. The progression from sadness and despair to problem solution to the triumphant return to the sky with the fish in tow is masterfully presented and ably extended by Domi's effervescent watercolor illustrations. Layers of translucent color convey both the luminescence of the sea and the tranquility of the sky. The combination of fantasy and the familiar, of the idea of the moon as a living entity and the power of friendship, proves irresistible and gives this retelling the stature to stand beside such excellent examples of the genre as Lois Ehlert's Moon Rope (1992) and Cuckoo (1997, both Harcourt). Note: The Spanish edition of Mora's book appears on page 179.Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Ages 2-5. In this retelling of a Mayan myth, the moon, Luna, falls from the sky and breaks into slivers and bits on the ocean floor. There, with the help of the friendly fish, Luna sees the color and beauty in the sea, and she finds the strength to gather the pieces, make herself whole, and return with her friends to her place in the sky. Beyond the archetype of exile and return, there's not much story, especially for young kids; but Mora's a fine poet, and her words are simple and immediate ("Where am I? Where's the sky? / Broken, sad, lost am I"). Mexican artist Domi's beautiful watercolors show the splashing rainbow colors connecting fish, sea, flowers, birds, moon, and sky. This book is the perfect choice for an art teacher looking to have students make exceptional art. The original watercolor techniques used by the illustrator are marvelous.

The size of the paperback was smaller than I expected as I will be using it in the classroom.

Myth. Young elementary picture book.Luna, the moon, shone in the sky. Her grandfather shot her with his blowgun, and she fell to the depths of the sea. The birds and everyone missed her light and asked her to come back. The fish became her friends and blew bubbles and sang to her. The fish looked for her reflection in the bits of shells and put her together again, wove themselves into a net and carried her high into the night sky.Unique water colors, which are very colorful and inviting.

My second-grader had to read this story for school. We found it confusing. We read a lot and there are not many stories that we just don't like. This was one of them though. We found it boring and did not really "get" the story. I'm still trying to figure out who the Grandfather is and the significance of him blowing her out of the sky with his blowgun.

This book can be an informative and engaging read for people who do not already have a broad familiarity with contemporary Scandanavia. However, as a social scientist with many years of research in Sweden, I found that the book has three shortcomings: first, it skims the surface of the abundant research findings on socio-economic issues in Scandanavia; second, it's essentially a book about Norway with bits of Danish and Swedish material sort-of tacked on; third, it's largely a whitewash, with insufficient attention paid to signs of dysfunction, like bias against immigrants, the bases of support and growing political influence right wing populist movements, widespread alcohol and drug problems, etc.

This is a very good survey of an alternative approach to structuring an economy than the one American’s believe must be the best in the world since it is American. The Nordic model that Lakey describes is not against markets, or capitalists, or profits. It does suggest that they should not be the ultimate concern in a society and should serve the needs of the members of the society, and not the other way around.I do wish he had spent more time describing how we might adapt this model to current conditions in the United States. The description of how the Scandinavians developed the consensus they currently have relied pretty heavily on an organized labor movement that has largely been eviscerated in the US.I do highly recommend it though. It is very approachable for book on this subject, and while I wouldn’t call it a page turner, it is a very enjoyable and enlightening read.

Viking Economics: how the Scandinavians got right and how we can too, by George Lakey, reviewed by Jerry WoolpyGrowing inequality is the root cause of our malaise. The symptoms are elite and corporate dominance and our inability to moderate them at the ballot box. Norway, Sweden, and Denmark provide the vision for our progressive movement. They struggled with elite dominance and authoritarianism and by dint of non-violent action overcame it to achieve meaningful democracy. Voting was not enough. Violence was not the answer. Boycotts, strikes, unionization, dogged demonstrations and other non-violent movements ultimately prevailed. Eventually the elite caved and strangely enough the economy prospered to the advantage of rich and poor alike. The goals that these tactics achieved were high taxes to support universal health care, free education, massive job training along with generous unemployment compensation. Bailouts for investors, including investment banks were prohibited. But coops and savings banks were protected. It turns out that most of the wealthy realized that high taxes were worth the cost because they lead to a stable and high growth economy with a population that trusts government. Crime and corruption were lowered to the lowest among developed nations. Only a few CEOs left the country. Startups and small business flourished as did small farms. Rural-Urban conflicts evaporated. Science, including environmental protection, global warming offsets, carbon taxes, electric cars, bikes and public transportation happened because of increased awareness and realism. Immigration and its consequent racism is and was a problem, but it was successfully mitigated and for the most part held to a minimum because of strong popular opinion and election results to the contrary. Lakey opines that Trump is a symptom not a cause. And he notes that Trump only got the votes of a quarter of the US population while the other three quarters failed to realize their majority and did not recognize the need to organize, demonstrate, start moving for things they favor: unions, taxes, health care, education, infrastructure, living wages, and jobs for everyone. Take heart friends. If the Vikings can do it so can the Yanks. Inequality is not our ultimate fate as long as we level the playing field for labor and make investors take the full risk of their investments without the protection of bailouts or tax loopholes.

Amazing summary of the incredible benefits of these economies, and how they got that way. More people should read it and get active to make the USA follow their lead.

Everyone should read this book. It tells how a couple of countries got it right. They have governments who actually care about all the people. Norway's goal was to eliminate property and in doing so they also eliminated a lot of other problems. Why can't the US do what Norway did?!!

Great lessons for America to learn from if we want to bring back the middle class again and prevent a culture of unhealthy financial, economical and psychological dependency... Universal health care, paid parental leave, paid vacation, free college, social mobility, retirement pensions, high trust society, transparent governments etc... When you create the right conditions for people to get their needs met throughout different stages of their lives whether it be a college student getting paid to go to school, a married couple taking time off to bond with their baby and still keep their job..., or a retiree needing medical treatment at old age the nation will flourish altogether and still be productive in the global economy...

Fabulous read, with great facts and statistics presented in a very engaging and readable format...brings the Scandinavian countries to life, and explains simply how their way of life and economy/culture supports a vibrant and forward-thinking, as well as very successful socioeconomic society that combines both freedom, equality of opportunity in personal and professional life choices, and the basic life necessities for everyone with the cultural foundation and expectation being that for this to work, everyone that can work should...in fact, the Scandinavian countries strongly encourage this by retraining and reeducating those so that they can become gainfully employed tax-paying citizens. While it touches on all three 'Scandinavian' countries (Sweden, Denmark, and Norway), it's heavily slanted on Norway, possibly because the author's wife is Norwegian and he spent time there after their marriage, but he also explores the other two nations (Iceland and Finland) that along with the three Scandinavian countries comprise the five Nordic countries. Fascinating and compelling reading.

#31,533 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This fun and informative book provides a unique perspective on some famous and some lesser known young women who made lasting contributions to society. The author and illustrator present engaging bios of 30 women who made their mark on the world—for many it was just their first mark— before they were 20. In "Teen Trailblazers" even figures from the past are relatable to young readers. The book covers a number of well-known people, but part of its charm lies in discovering trailblazers you may never have heard of. The list includes Margaret Knight who invented a safety device for cotton mills in 1850 when she was 12 years old (she went on to invent the flat-bottom paper bag and about 90 other inventions), and Claudette Colvin, a 15 year old African-American high-school student who was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, nine months before Rosa Parks took her famous ride.

I started reading this book to my 6 year old daughter and it’s become her favorite. Every night, before bed, she picks out two profiles for us to read. We talk about the girl profiled and she asks questions about history and social change that normally wouldn’t come up in conversations with a kindergartener. While it is a bit above her age range (I’d say 8-13 years are perfect ages), she is learning so much about history and is getting so inspired. The writing is engaging and makes historical figures as accessible as present day pioneers. The layout - with sidebars and quotes - is great for her short attention span while still packing in the info. It is a fantastic gift to give any young girl in your life. I’ll be buying more as Christmas presents for family and friends.

I was delighted to see just how thorough and interesting this book is. The illustrations are beautiful too. It’s so important for girls to know that they are capable of great things and this book is a great contribution to any family’s efforts in that regard. Great to read together or for a girl (or boy, since they need to know too!) to read on her own.

The listed age range is 12 to 18. Unfortunately, the article length, the layout, the illustrations, the large type, etc. make this look like a book you would find on the shelf in a fifth-grade classroom. Even middle school feels like a stretch. There also isn't a ton of info. in here. The book has 122 pages, including the "about the author" page, and at least 30 of those pages are full illustrations of the young women in the book. So there are maybe 80 pages of material total in large type.If you are looking for a book with brief information about inspiring young women FOR YOUR FIFTH GRADER, then this could be a four-star book The layout for that age group would be inviting and fun. However, the lack of resources/bibliography drops it at least one star even for that age group, because where do these facts come from? How can readers know they're accurate? This omission doesn't set a good example for young scholars. For the teen audience, the book is simply too basic. I had hoped this would inspire my 15-year-old, but the presentation is just too juvenile. I'd be embarrassed to give it to her. Disappointing.

I got this for my tween daughters hoping to inspire them. I gave it to the more avid reader first, she skimmed and read only those stories that looked most interesting to her and then left the book at school. I finally got her to bring it home so her sister could read it. Her sister did the same thing pretty much. I can understand skipping over Joan of Arc because we have a nice book on her by Demi, but I had hoped they would ahem both gotten into the book a little more. Anyway, she started by reading the names included on the contents page. Then she skimmed to those who interested her and even then she'd often just read bits about each girl and not even the whole write up. If there was a person she was keenly interested in she'd read the whole thing. For example she read the whole story on Emma Watson. Then suddenly her sister was re-interested in the book and asked for it back and went in and read some more about some of the girls she passed over the first time. This led her to research more, she wanted to know more about what led up to Malala's story so I had to give her a truncated version of Afghan history since the 1980s, she wanted to know the plot to Frankenstein, and she says she now wants to go to the Smithsonian because Mattie Knight's original flat bottomed paper bag making machine is there. She also was really struck by the comparison chart for Sybil Ludington and Paul Revere. And even though we all already know the story behind Anne Frank that was still an attention getter oddly enough. While I had hoped they both would have gotten into it more they both did read a bunch and we all learned some new stuff, and it did cause at least one daughter to dig deeper on her own outside of the book. So is this book a LOVE? No, but it sure deserves a LIKE.

1969 and Then Some, by Robert WintnerOpening the pages of “1969 and Then Some” is to be transported back in time. The subtitle of the book is “A memoir of romance, motorcycles, and the lingering flashbacks of a golden age” it is a masterly evocation of a time that is no longer with us. Countless clichés remain, of course, and backward-looking opinions. Robert Wintner writes that you had to be there then, when you were young, to say what is true about the period. To enter the book is to relive the period with its dynamism, its sense of revolution, and the fun; “Who knows when so much fun will happen again?”Wintner writes that “life was full and fuller then, with good vibrations seeming involuntary as breath or pulse. Never before and not since then have a handful of seasons so exquisitely defined the difference between right and wrong. With the gift of vision we saw, sensed and savored the laughably clear division between the profit motive and greed, between truth and propaganda, between national interest and defense contractors.” It is above all in the concrete evocations of the period that the book really excels. It admirably carries out his aphorism “We saw, we felt, we knew.” First and foremost there is the love of high speed. The author was an aficionado of motorcycles; an early chapter is titled suggestively “We Have Ignition and…” Wintner informs us that the motorcycle of choice “for first-wave baby-boomers on the tail end of adolescence, and wanting to cross nations on two wheels, was the Triumph: “The single carb Thunderbolt and a twin-carb Lightning Rocket…one sixty to one seventy-five mph was attainable right out of the box for the truly crazy.” The young Wintner crossed England and France to Spain and the festival of Sam Fermin in Pamplona. More powerful motorcycle models were to follow: “The 441 Victor came only in yellow, and actually owning a 441 was a yellow badge of machismo—a pogo stick with incredible low-end torque.” Wintner’s descriptions of motorcycles and speed are infectious; and he has a talent for making technical details, the “specs” interesting. The book is excellent on the music and lyrics of the period. “Hard-driving anarchy” characterized the music of the times. “Nobody illustrated the agony and the ecstasy better than the Rolling Stones, who put a spike right through my head”; there was also the Velvet Underground, Arlo Guthrie, son of Woody, Steppenwolf, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Magic Carpet Ride, Bob Dylan’s “Hard Rain,” Creedence Clearwater, Mick Jagger with “Mr. Jimmy” and “Mother’s Little Helper”—“a rock ode to barbiturates”--“Let It Bleed,” Big Brother and the Holding Company, Country Joe and the Fish. A lengthy list of “Acknowledgements” is given at the end of the book; it begins “Special Thanks to the music makers, the musicians lyricists, poets and all who captured the age and then some—who gave voice to idea as old as the ages but long since forgotten, until the 60s.”With young people at the time music and drugs often went together. Often they were what Wintner calls “acidnauts.” On that new frontier “we were the pioneers.” During a typical evening “some wine, some cheese, a little piece of hash I’d managed to score in Rome, and the world glittered anew. You get nights of beauty your whole life, though that summer of ’69 they came like clockwork as though the supply were endless.” On another evening, “So fire the f…ing pipes and man the wine bottles. Oh, say, can you see?” Later, “they sat and stared at the universe unfolding or danced the funky chicken alone in the cosmos.” In another scene “By sundown we had enough to go around—purple microdots, pink barrels, Owsleys, Orange sunshine and blotters, with a single electric neon Jesus and a few odd extras in case of late arrivals or acid malfunction.” Sometimes acid burnout occurred, a result of frequency or dosage “triggered by the rock ‘n roll mentality of more, more, more. If one hit was cosmic then two hits should have been galactic, or something silly—make that stupid, with nine hits revealing the face of God. So it was. Those burnouts looked crispy—and insane.”“1969 and Then Some” describes some of the movies of the time that had a profound impact-- “Full Metal Jacket,” “The Deer Hunter,” “Good Morning Vietnam,” “Platoon,” “Born on the Fourth of July, ” and many others including “the benchmark of reasoned insanity, “Apocalypse Now” that Wintner compares to Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.”Wintner is forceful in writing about the politics of the time. These took place in stark relief. During the Democratic Convention of 1968, “Chicago looked more like Dresden than a windy city.” “The Doors” put a heartfelt tragedy into a lyrical love ballad “The End,” that lamented the love lost between a generation and its country.” This sentence could be an epigraph of “1969 and Then Some.” The Vietnam War was the period of draft lotteries, of lives on hold, what Wintner calls “the campus/jungle interface.” One of the most popular books at the time was “1001 Ways to Beat the Draft.”The Vietnam war period was a time of both political and military crisis. Lies, unpalatable, ugly, gross-- Generals Harkins and Westmoreland come to mind—were revealed with numbing regularity. Corruption in the US military became increasingly conspicuous. The fables of Robert McNamara were all completely repudiated by himself at a later date. (See Neil Sheehan.)The contemporary reader should be reminded of an important demographic fact: the generation of young people at the time was very large in comparison with other age groups. Many American adults put off having children during WWII, until 1945-6. Then the birth rate took off. A demographic ”bulge” was produced by the large number of American children born between 1946 and 1949. They were fully draft age by 1969. They had the force of numbers.Robert Wintner’s “1969 and Then Some” evokes this period superbly. It comes alive, once again.

This is a Hunter Thompsonesque account of Robert Wintner's adventures in the late 60s and 70s, and even much later decades where it appears many of the lessons experienced in the 60's and 70's were not well learned. The writing shows promise -- yes, I know he's written several novels, etc. -- but this book indicates he's no Hunter Thompson. It's a decent read for anyone who might have hit the road in the same era. The folks he came across or knew we all did, for better or worse. I do have to point out he greatly exaggerates the speed capable of his BSA and every other motorcycle he's ridden. I can say this with surety.

Great story! Snorkel Bob's writing is so colorful, I enjoyed every chapter! Aloha!UPDATE: Read it again & it got even BETTER!I want to order a bunch in paperback to give to friends!! Do you have a " case price "!?

This memoir follows the author on his European motorcycle adventure when he is in his early 20s, through his college days, and then his earliest attempts to make a living as a magazine writer and then a real estate handler. It’s nitty gritty, the author not holding back ever on recounting his decisions and life path.I recently read another book by this author (Brainstorm) and it wasn’t a good fit for me. However, this book was absolutely fascinating and I was a little sad when it came to an end. There’s lots of drug culture and counter culture stuff going on in this book. I don’t get all of it, and I don’t agree with all of it. However, it was so very different from my own life that I was swiftly caught up in the tale. The author became this main character that I sometimes rooted for and sometimes I wanted to kick. I became attached to the story line and was very curious to see how things would turn out.The first big chunk of the book covers the author’s European motorcycle trip. There’s plenty of drugs, interesting male characters, and women who the author is interested in. He’s exploring life in general, seeing the sites on a dime and meeting interesting people. In listening to this section, I really felt that the author remembers this time with great fondness. After some few months, the author returns home. The Vietnam war is in full swing and being drafted into it is a very real thing. So, he goes to college to get that draft deferment. Again, there are plenty of drugs, alcohol, and women. In general, college was a joke. Students aimed for a middle grade C in order to stay in college, and perhaps earn a degree eventually. The author and most of his friends didn’t take college seriously. There’s almost a fatalistic feel to this section of the book, like no matter what they do, sooner or later they will be swept up into one of three things: death by drugs & alcohol, the war machine, or the much slower death of conformity.Eventually, the author has to get proactive about dodging the Vietnam draft. These endeavors take him on road trips across the country, and also mental trips of physical degradation. Both wore him down. After this section, the time line of the tale speeds up. Years or decades go by as the author talks about what jobs he was willing to do once the fear of being drafted had passed. He also keeps tabs on a few friends, goes on a few more motorcycle rides, has a few stints in the hospital, and in general, ages. Here’s one of my few criticisms of the book. Nearly all the ladies mentioned are merely sex objects. The author’s mom, who has a small role at the beginning of the book, and again near the end is one exception. Also, an old flame nicknamed Betty Boop has a recurring role in the tale, though most of those encounters center around her sex appeal. Late in the book, the author’s wife Rachel (who played a pivotal role in Brainstorm) is mentioned a few times. The book started off with the 20 something year old author and so I could understand raging hormones and all at that during that time of life. However, the ladies never seem to matter much more even as the author ages. There’s tons of drug culture stuff in this book, which I found fascinating. The author speaks often of how the drug use was a way to expand the mind and become a little closer with the universe, etc. I didn’t really get this. Of course, I had to wonder how small the user’s mind was to begin with, and then I wondered what these ‘enlightened’ folks did with the expanded minds. While both questions went unanswered, I found it very interesting how they repeatedly told themselves this, like it was a justification. Perhaps for some it was. Perhaps for others, it was exactly what they said it was – an expansion of their reality. This goes hand in hand with the need to not conform, ever. That seemed to be a driving force in the author’s life and definitely added some interesting aspects to the story. First off, there was a whole generation of people who decided they would not conform…. so that kind of created a new branch conformity. Having a standard 8-5 job with benefits was something of a death knell to these folks. It was very fascinating to watch them work so hard to avoid this conformity, and to keep enjoying drugs, alcohol, and free sex. Indeed, I didn’t get chunks of this book, and I don’t agree with all the philosophies woven through the narrative. Nevertheless, it was a fascinating look into someone else’s life. In the end, I simply enjoyed the ride.I received a copy of this audiobook at no cost as part of the iReads Book Tour in exchange for an honest review. The Narration: Robin Bloodworth did a great job with the narration. He had a variety of regional and European accents for the tale. Also, his character voices were all distinct. His female voices were believable. He imbued the story with emotion as needed and I really liked how he brought the author’s memoir to life.
