I originally bought this book for some specific needs. Afterwards I just got interested and had fun learning more about English.

The book does not clearly define isms and ologies; it just gives root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Also I was expecting a hardback copy, esp. at that price. I intend to return this item this week.

The terminology of medicine and biology, to name just two fields, is rife with words formed largely by compounding Greek stems. This book enables a layman like me to make sense of them, and of many other words in more common usage. Michael Quinion's explanations of the word parts (usually prefixes and suffixes, but frequently syllables found in the middle of words) are clearly written, and he provides examples of the most common words using each stem.I would estimate that perhaps 80% of the word stems contained in this book are of Greek origin, either directly or as modified by Latin usage. Since the list of stems is 269 pages long, however, that means that there are plenty of word stems of different origin.This is also one of those rare reference books that are a joy just to dip into and read an entry or two.

This book is boring as sin (i.e. a colloquial phrase that means its the most boring thing I've ever read). Even its new edition is like forcing yourself to watch paint dry in an agonizing form that is never ending. I pity those that are forced to read this. To someone who isn't completely new to IT, it is incredibly boring with most chapters in the book. I think the book was actually extended purposefully to fill pages because of how the writing isn't condensed at all. It also has unnecessary graphics, tables, etc covering numerous pages. The processes it lists ranging from planning to implementing a plan and defending against attacks seem to be scaled for a large corporation and not really a small business. Most of the stuff I knew already but, as far as knowing all of these different acronyms for aspects of a business, I highly doubt anyone uses the entirety of the terms in this book in a business setting.

Whoa. This book was incredibly sleep-inducing. Every time I would begin reading, all I wanted to do was lay my head down on the desk. At an extremely high velocity. Again and again.All in all, I think the book has a lot of useful information. Some chapters were actually pretty interesting. I know that paper is not quite so scarce that we can't spread the words out a bit and put in some bullets or paragraph breaks, rather than pages and pages of solid text. Bleh. Ain't nobody got time for that.So, if you must get this book as a requirement, take heart - the semester will end. Until then, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water, and just do your best to stay awake.

Although some information was interesting in here, it delivered it in a poorly-written way. There was some new stuff I didn't cover in previous classes, but I feel that I had to comb over The Great Wall of Text to get to the point. Moreover, this book is MOSTLY the Management side of InfoSec, not so much the Hacking side. It only briefly covers on the highly-technical details, whereas it loads you mostly with Best Practices and the like.Tells you what tools Cybersecurity uses, but doesn't really give any examples of HOW to use them. Does, however, give some decent Security Architecture tips, but it doesn't really cover anything about configuration and such.If it had fewer metric tonnes of fluff, perhaps it could have gotten a 3 or even 4, but it took what I thought was going to be the most interesting of my courses and made it the most obnoxious.

My teacher assigned this book for our class and it is one of the hardest and driest books to read. I feel like every chapter is the same and I am reading a slightly different versions of chapter one. To top it off I have to take a quiz on the information. Even the powerpoints that accompany the book are 55 slides or more.I think this book suffers mainly from lazy writing and lazy editing. If this book had been properly edited it would have been a third of the size that it is and the student would walk away with the meat of the subject instead of a little meat and a whole lot of fat.

Buyer beware. I rented the Kindle version for my class. The punchline is that it doesn't work on my Kindle, not supported? Only works on some androids as an app (not all) and will not work on Kindle Cloud. Also doesn't work on Win 8 app version of Kindle, but will as the PC (Win 7) version of the Kindle application. Confused yet? Pathetic in my opinion. A kindle version only partially supported by Amazon. I asked their help desk on 2 different times and they only replied that the author would authorize? Why would that even be close to a real reason - Kindle versions should not be constrained even on Amazon's own native devices.As for the book - it's dry. It is about internet security so making it an exciting read would be a stretch. I didn't rent it to entertain myself, it was a required read for a class. I gave it 3 stars only because the author allowed it to be rented by students which is a huge help considering tuition costs.

The book was a requirement for a Information Security class. It needs updating and better layout but the price is nice for a textbook. Overall I found the class too easy and this book is for someone new to information security. I was expecting a more in-depth class as it being a 300 level class but was disappointed. The book is all black and white and doesn't even offer margins to write in notes. Again the price is nice but my copy arrived where the pages looked faded. I don't think this was unique to my copy but how the book is mass produced.

If you have the opportunity to read this book while not enrolled in college, you'll appreciated it even more! The first four chapters might not be your cup of tea if you just care about firewalls, IDS, IDPS, VPNs, and encryption, but if you are a scholar and interested in security principles as a whole, get this book. Get the Kindle version if you can. I have the paper back and I wish I had the digital version, too!

This is the best book I've found to study the foundations of Information Security. It is a must read for anyone preparing for the CISSP exam. The information is presented logically and explained thoroughly. I also recommend "Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals" by the same publisher.

I was lent a copy that was published in 1988. The version got was published in 1996.The last hike in the 1988 version was the one I wanted the book for. It was not in the 1996 version.FYI the hike missing was Camp Creek.

"The Green Book" - a great little book with 16 backcountry canyoneering and hiking routes in Zion. It's a little dated now, but still has great charm. A good source for the non-technical and semi-technical classics (Narrows, Orderville, Subway). Until recently, the only published backcountry guide to Zion, it still holds it own against the commercial interlopers.

I feared this would insult her intelligence (she has some class and professional training with tools) but changed my mind after seeing the practical advice from the author, Chris Hackett. This is a book that even many experienced DIYers, tinkers, and makers will find useful for its advice about some tools one might be hesitant to blindly purchase (like welders). Nice art layout, well organized (including practical advice on first aid -- like when to get stitches), broad in its coverage. I have a ton of DIY books, from basic carpentry to computer hacking. This book will serve many folks looking for early insight about methods and tools while beginning a project.

A not half bad book.Some of the Maker Skills will work.Some might get you killed.User discretion is advised.This thing covers a lot of what one would need to set up a small industrial factory in one's back yard.Some of it requires - distance - and, space - for proper operation.A few of the processes have the potential to go seriously wrong.The only thing guaranteeing that you don't take out your house is a distantly detached garage.Many of the other recommendations are far less consequential.Know "your" limitations.Follow your gut, use your sense of comfort level.It is very McGyver-ish.Most everything will work - as described.It does have very practical advise.Double down on your homeowners before you attempt the more pyrotechnic projects.

The style and prose and information in this book are amazing. It’s got the resourcefulness of a post apocalyptic scavver and the know how of your trusted mechanic who dabbles in every other trade. Really good stuff, the book has these four metal corner protectors that give it a built tough aesthetic. I just got into Chris Hackett, can’t even find where to buy Stuck with Hackett s1/2. Anyway this is the book I wish I’d found in high school, but I probably would have just used to roll cigarettes on.

This was a good book for me. I've dabbled in electronics, electrical, woodworking, and more, a typical handyman and DIYer, and I have several books on home “DIY” and maintenance, so I was familiar with many of the skills covered by this book. So while the skills covered by this book have some overlap with those, overall it supplements them very nicely. I found this book covered far more skills I didn't know, than I knew. My first thought upon looking through the book was 'this is what I needed back in school for my science projects."In particular the skills in this book on working with metal (forming and welding) and plastic will be valuable to me. I was also impressed with the coverage of the tools required for the skills covered. I also like the clarity of the articles and pictures.I'm impressed with it enough, that I'm going to get a copy of this for my adult son.

This is a cool book to read and look through. Almost a "coffee table" (or maybe workbench is more apropos) type book as it has a lot of nice photos that are well taken. My kids also like looking through the book, which is cool. It can be read in short bites as each section can be read as a stand alone section. It has some good ideas, but I found it more inspirational as opposed to instructable (don't think this is a real word, but you get the drift...).

This is a great introduction to the various skills you might need while bringing your ideas into reality. It was an easy read that left me with a beginners level understanding of some equipment and skills I've never used before. This is a good starting point for people new to the concepts of "making." Even more advanced makers may learn a thing or two to get them started down the path to mastering a new skill set.

I have been in the maintenance field for over 30 years and this book has shone me I can still find better ways to do a lot of things. I got this book for my 17 year old son and read it first and discovered a bunch of new ways to do a better job. From straighter welds to new ways to implementation 555 timer. As I teach my boy we end up learning together and this has been a blast.

Honestly I bought this thinking is was going to be a how too for random designs, but it ended up being an explanation type book one various tools and how to use them. Very handy to have around when a project requires a tool you are unfamiliar with.

This product is wonderful. I was insecure about purchasing this product and the other "Quick Study" guides, I purchased at the same time, as I saw brochure in the description of this product, but I did not find any indication that it was a laminated. This concerned me and I was planning on having it laminated upon receipt. However, I did not have to laminate it since it came laminated and three hole punched. Thus, I was able to just place it with the other ones I purchased into a three ring binder. It is quick and efficient for studying for my classes on the run, between appointments or errands, and as a quick glance. These guides are a very handy tool. I purchased other Medical Terminology reference guides as well as a few Anatomy guides. I will eventually purchase the individual systems' guides. This entire series is well worth the price.

This a a great reference guide with any medical classes in school. I use it continuously in my Advanced Medical Coding & Billing course.
