I have all of Martha Stewart's cookbooks, so I was pretty excited when this one arrived.Some of the other reviewers have gone in great detail about the exact recipes etc., so I won't bore you with that.What I love about this cookbook (as with the rest of her cookbooks) are:1) a photo for each recipe! I really dislike cookbooks that have a recipe and no photo, particularly for desserts. after all, i want to know what it is going to look like.2) very clear, concise, and reliable directions.3) it's very clearly organized (both the cookbook and each recipe)4) a short blurb on the top for each recipe giving you tips/pointers5) excellent step-by-step photos/directions in the back of the book for making pate sucree or pate brisee or puff pastry.I trust Martha Stewart and know she will not put her name on a recipe unless it has been tested over and over.She hasn't failed met yet!First pie I made was chocolate cream pie. Yes, it's a novice pie, but I have a 3 yr old so I wanted a crowd pleaser (or rather a kid-pleaser). Easy to follow directions for the crust, filling and whipped topping. It was absolutely delicious and looked professional. Pie was finished by my guests.Second thing I made was the fruit tart. Rather than do the mini tarts, I did two nine-inch tarts (and she has notes in case you want to do a lot of mini ones or larger 9-inch tarts). Made the pate sucre, made the vanilla pastry cream the day before (my husband and kids licked the spoon from that!) and assembled it a few hours before serving. Beautiful, delicious and I was so pleased with the results.I highly recommend this cookbook, and with her clear instructions, beautiful photos and wide assortment of crowd-pleasing recipes, I know this will be one I will be referring to over and over. Wow. I was looking for a great pie book or two, and passed this one over at first because, Martha Stewart, boring, right? But after buying / looking at several newer, blogger-style, seasonal, artisan, pie-goddess type books and not liking them at all, I ordered this book because it was inexpensive and I thought it might be a good reference. OMG, I love it! There are so many recipes that I'm dying to make, it's hard to decide where to start. The photos are gorgeous, and the instructions are clear and simple. Most recipes are very straight-forward and look like they will be easy to execute. I'm thrilled with this book and not even looking at another.

I'm sure this is a perfectly fine cookbook for someone but it wasn't the one for me. I have the cookie one like this and love it but returned this one the same day it arrived. I just want classic pies with a few new fangled things thrown in.

I was THRILLED to see this book arrive as I am a " cake and bread baker" and in my yrs of baking,,,,, I can probably count the number of pies I have made on one hand~Shameful ,,,,and I considered myself a "baker"?? I have made it a priority this year to bake favorite pies for birthdays , home celebrations , picnics and potlucks ~ I thought it was high time I face this challenge head on . I bought tiny pie tins for the children's pies after picking a load of apples from our small orchard I do think the addition of fruit in many pies/tarts has a healthier edge than heavy layer cakes which I had made for so many years~ and of course, one can control the sweetness~I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of the first tart I made which was the peach and berry tart.( First chapter) It is easily made up in only a few minutues, then baked~I baked this for DH to take to a men's breakfast at church ~It was so pretty that someone said it looked more like decoration than dessert! And it was my FIRST tart! But the TASTE was even better!( he saved a piece for me) I did use the called for addition of cornmeal to the tart crust and it did have a great flavor in an all fruit tart which is now my favorite tart!The tart looked GORGEOUS and made it look like I was an expert pie baker , I can assure you I am not! I did things a bit different tho, and I am assuming for the most part a lot of the pies are subject to individual taste~ I made this in an 8" tart pan( because it looked prettier!) and added a few nectarines in w/ the peaches, which made for an excellant taste~I DID however have to add more than double sugar suggested, and I do not have a huge sweet tooth , so maybe the fruit pies are way way under the sweetness range for me?? But perhaps not for you~I have had tarts in Europe and do realize that they do use less sugar all the way around except for maybe Austria or Germany?I had to double the amount of time baking this tart even tho my oven temp is spot on,, I did have some pie covers that I had collected( and never used!) that I topped over the very crust so the top would not get burned,,,,,so far,,so good,,,I think this is all part of the learning curve for me b/c the apple pies and pumpkin pies came out perfect as per recipe in the book.I won't give a whole list of the pies, other reviewers have been kind enough to do so,,but I will say as my confidence in pie making grows I will be happily baking those birthday PIES this year ~ my favorite is mile high lemon,,,,,DH, cherry pie from our own trees. I really wanted to master pie making as we grow a TON of cherries, berries and have a lot of fruit trees that have now matured enough to bear a lot,,,,,so now is THE time! And , being so blessed to have a mini orchard on our land, I wanted to USE it to its best potential b/c the price of fruit is getting higher by the week. I am hoping to look up to see if I can freeze a pie unbaked) so I can have a fresh pie to go when we have people over for a quick brunch or dinner, I have heard this can be done but will have to look at this further has anyone done this successfully I wonder?)I cannot see how any baker could be bored with this book , it is a gorgeous COLLECTION of many pies one can bake and the photograpy is stunning~( so you can see just how your pie is to look finished! Some of us NEED this.... which is often missing in cookbooks or e recipesI like inspiration, and to see what I can bake w/ what I happen to have on hand in any particular season ,as I said, we grow a lot of berries and cherries that I used to freeze for toppings to cakes which is kind of sad now that I think of it~ While I work my way thru the pie book I will be careful to taste fruits and berries, and even cremes so I am certain they are up to my taste levelI do think that it will only be a taste thing with the fruit tho~Only one problem,,,,,THE famous " Elegant Farmer Pie" baked in a brown bag which has been on cooking shows to compete with) has never been duplicated w/ accuracy yet!I know, I live a few miles from where they make this great pie but I am sure going to look it up on the net.Love love love the book! My husband is also happy, because it is true,many people are pie lovers first and cake lovers second~ One big disclaimer here,,,,I do NOT eat much sugar , I my eat pie maybe 3 times a year?? But I LOVE to bake and bake I do,,,,,for others!This book is a very good thing~

I especially like the illustrations that accompany the instructions for making dough in a food processor. The instructions show what the dough should look like at every stage of the process. This book is well worth the price, and then some.

Mr. Tremper Longman, has written a very well-thought-out book. However, I must take exception with a couple of major points. First, ten separate occasions in his work does he make the statement that there is unquestionable, “overwhelming scientific evidence” for the truth of the theory of evolution. Yes, I know this is not a science book but he never attempts to layout any evidence at all. Actually, the truth is that the evidence is scarce. For example, no one can document any example of any creature becoming a new type of creature. Yes, I know that “it can’t be seen because it takes millions and millions of years.” However, the simple organism known as the fruit fly, Drosophila, has been actually studied for a hundred years. College biology students, such as myself, once bred these fast-reproducing creatures. Professional scientists have tried every genetic mutating trick to try to get the fly to at least start evolving into a new creature. Millions upon millions of generations of the fly have been bred for a hundred years by thousands of people. The result was absolutely no genetic change. Double leg or wings disappeared the next generation. If evolution was true, this experiment with a very simple creature should have produced something. No, Darwin’s birds changing beak structure is not macroevolution.Second, the most important geological event as related in Genesis did not merit more than a passing paragraph. Here is the key to total belief in the “Young Earth” understanding. The great flood of Genesis was real and destroyed the surface of the entire earth. Evolutionists cannot explain the existence of thousands of feet of water-borne sediment found all throughout the earth. What’s even more interesting, evolutionists can not explain the existence of the massive underground lakes of fossil fuels, buried a mile deep, found in thousands of locations throughout the world. The fuels, once living organisms, had to be buried quickly or become soil. But, being buried quickly, the anaerobic bacteria converted the organic material into oil, methane, and coal. Only the biblical account of a worldwide flood explains the massive amounts of trillions of barrels of oil buried, not to forget the coal beds.So, two important accounts the author either doesn’t know about or simply ignored.

The Frog and Toad books were my son's favorite growing up. I loved them, and I kept them for many years. When my grandson was old enough to understand the stories and start to read, my son asked me if I still had the Frog and Toad books. Of course I did! My grandson is now enjoying these--over thirty years later! They are great books about friendship, helping each other, and taking care of each other. I still love these, and I take every opportunity to read them to my grandson!

I have very fond memories of reading Frog and Toad when I was little. They were funny then and they're funny now, some thirty-odd years later. I have purchased three of the Frog and Toad books for my child and love reading them to him. I bought Arnold Lobel's books in hardcover when they first came out. Our children adored the stories and illustrations and they wanted us to read them every night at bedtime. By following along as we read Lobel's and other "I Can Read" books, our children learned to read before they entered school. The stories are definitely designed to facilitate reading skills but they are also engaging, with a focus on friendship, love and behaviour. I cannot recommend these charming books enough.Now for the negative comments: The Kindle versions are extremely disappointing; the font and illustrations are quite small. One can double tap and increase the font size a little bit, in small sections. This doesn't allow for reading to a child while smoothly running a finger under the words being read, as it would if all of the text on a page was enlarged at once. Running a finger under the text is a significant step in teaching a child to read while using "I Can Read" books, so this particular "double tap" method defeats that purpose.In addition, the illustrations don't seem as vibrant as in the hardcover books and they can't be enlarged. The publisher did a real disservice to both the author and the readers by the poor job they did in transferring the books into digital format.Even with my dislike for the way in which the publisher digitalized this book, it is still a very worthwhile purchase. It's message is timeless and the stories and illustrations are sure to appeal to both it's target audience and to the adults reading it to them.

Arnold Lobel was one of the few authors who can read their own work well. This is one of the best audio books, bar none. Arnold is not only better than any other author, but most of the professional actors who have done audio books. What I should say is that he tells the stories, he doesn't read them. The music that accompanies the telling, I can take or leave.

Arnold Lobel was such a wonderful writer, I'm not quite sure what to say about this book or how to say it. For now I'll leave that to the other 5-star reviews. I'm just here to tell you the Kindle edition needs some work.The problem is this isn't really an ebook but a set of scans - single images, two pages at a time, so that you can't even read them in portrait mode. Perhaps the newer Fire models can accommodate this somehow, but on both my Paperwhite and my son's 7" Fire, as well as the Kindle desktop application, each two-page scan is forced into a single landscape display. I don't exaggerate when I say these are nothing but images of the pages. There seems to be no interaction available with the text, and zooming in on the illustrations isn't possible. Even basic pinch zooming in on the entire page isn't permitted.I don't approve of giving good books poor ratings because of publisher laziness. If I did, this one would get 2 or 3 stars. The colors are a little more vibrant than in the newer print editions, and for what it's worth the scans are clear. The table of contents does work, but not from the Go To menu, only on the actual Table of Contents page.If you already own these books in print and you have a big Kindle or REALLY good eyesight, go for it. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and buy the physical books. Lobel's work is essential for both children and adults, stunningly wise at times and always beautiful. The Frog and Toad stories are among his best, and these ones are particularly good.

I ordered this cookbook because I have one from the 90's that has fallen apart. I have enjoyed many of the recipes in there for many years. I was pleasantly surprised to get a hand written note from the bookstore owner saying how much they love that cookbook, and it was their last one. Fast delivery, and it was in great shape :)

I had owned this book but went on a de-cluttering spree a few years ago and ended up selling this book. There are few regrets that I have in my life but letting go of this treasure is among the regret list because there were so many recipes that I had tried and loved but many others that I would have wanted to try. This is a hardbound collection of easy recipes using readily available ingredients. I'm hardly a gourmet cook but with this collection, you don't have to be. Now that it's in my collection again I will be hanging onto it. This is book two of two of the Land O Lakes books that I recently bought back. I have written the same review for the other book and will without question gave that a five star review as well.

My girlfriend and her mom & sisters have this edition which they call the Bible. Her dad was selling these door to door at the time and bought each of his girls a copy. I've had so many wonderful dishes over the years that I decided to see if I could find it. And what do ya know Amazon had it! Aren't they awesome? So excited about my find.

This is a very hard to find cookbook...as I don't think it's any longer in print. If you can find it, I recommend you buy it up b/c this is cookbook has the most incredible easy to follow country/comfort food recipes. It hold the entire range of cooking ideas such as: breakfast/starters/bread/soups/pasta/meats/desserts etc. I've tried most of the recipes and I don't have any negative reviews to make on it. I will say that the best format to buy this cookbook is in hardback copy. The ring binder option is a bit of a nightmare as the rings don't stay flush together...and over lap a bit causing the pages to rip and come away. But if you do buy this format option, be sure and buy ring reinforcements to protect the rings on the pages. Other than that, good luck finding it and enjoy!

I just received this from Amazon the other day.It is a plastic binder.This makes it very easy to removed the recipe that you want to make without having toTurn the book this way or that way to read the recipe and look at the picture.The other wonderful part of this cookbook is that the pictures help guide you.The recipes are only on one page and the picture on the other side.I had this delivered while at work.I had people clamoring at lunch to look through this cook book.One person said that it made him drool and another lady stating that she was buying thisCook book.Another wonderful part of this is that you can add recipes to this as it is a binder.This is worth the money I spent.I have looked for cook books that have pictures and this one is a great buy.

I have had this cookbook for a long, long time. My original book was so worn out I decided to replace it with a better copy. I have a handful of favorites that come from this book. As the years have progressed I have made a few of them more healthy but they are still a bunch of tried and true favorites.

I love this cookbook and have given them as gifts.

I bought this book several, I mean several years ago and it became my go to when I wanted to cook something fun and comforting. I loved the recipes as they are easy laid out, and not very complex. While the recipes are but your run of the mill American cooking they are different enough they do not come off typical or boring. Lost the book in a move and alas found it in Amazon. I can not wait for it to arrive.
